Chapter 310
Chapter 310
The fourth layer’s floor was no longer made of marble tiles but instead covered in dirt and grass.
Near a headless corpse stood a bony old horse, calmly grazing. Judging from its horseshoes, saddle, and reins, it was clearly the steed of the fallen "Knight."
Feng Bu Jue approached, patted the horse’s head, but the creature barely reacted, continuing to munch on grass.
"Looks like Don Quixote’s turn now", Qiu Feng remarked.
"Indeed... the man who stood at the pinnacle of middle school syndrome", Feng Bu Jue replied. "Unparalleled, before or after."
"So... he charged at the windmill like in the original story, mistaking it for a giant, impaling the Scarecrow as he emerged from the third floor", Ji Chang speculated, piecing together the scene. "Then the Tin Man burst out of the windmill and killed him."
Hong Hu’s eyes narrowed. "Where’s the Tin Man now?" He scanned the area. "This layer’s small enough to see the ends, but I don’t see him. Or a path to the fifth floor—the ceiling’s sealed shut."
"There’s writing here—might be a message", Feng Bu Jue suddenly said, standing beside the broken spear. "Look, carved into the shaft..."
The team gathered. The inscription, though in Spanish, was translated by the game menu: "Greet misfortune with a smile, face calamity with tenfold courage."
"Hmm... collective contemplation", Qiu Feng muttered. "These messages are just philosophical musings, ten-point satire at best. They don’t help our puzzle-solving."
Hong Hu frowned. "Maybe more messages will appear. We lack enough clues to solve this."
"True", Ji Chang agreed. "If these messages are puzzle pieces, we need at least 80% before seeing the full picture."
"Focus on reaching the fifth layer", Qiu Feng urged. "Our clues: the windmill, a corpse, and an old horse."
"It’s named Rocinante", Feng Bu Jue said.
"Huh?" Qiu Feng blinked. "The horse’s name? I’ve only heard of Don Quixote, not the horse."
"You’ve never read the book? No wonder you’re clueless", Feng Bu Jue scoffed. "Why don’t you just eat your own feces and die?"
"Hey! Plenty of people haven’t read it! And why that suicide method?!" Qiu Feng snapped.
Hong Hu interjected, "The book’s actually pretty good."
"Pretty good?!" Feng Bu Jue glared, lifting the helmeted head. "You dare call Cervantes’ sharp, tragicomic epic ‘pretty good’ before this immortal, tragicomic figure?"
"Uh... I take it back", Hong Hu muttered, unnerved by the oppressive aura.
"You apologize?!" Qiu Feng gaped. "He’s just a fan, not the author!"
Feng Bu Jue lectured, "Don Quixote blends reality and fantasy, tragedy and comedy. Cervantes’ words inspired generations. After reading it, I vowed to write such realistic fantasy. If I reach 30% of his brilliance, I’ll die content. You’d never understand this bond... elf ball addict."
"Elf ball? Again with the obscure references!" Qiu Feng groaned.
Ji Chang sighed. "Back to the puzzle? This chapter’s halfway done."
"Right", Feng Bu Jue complied. "Notice the Sun over there?" He pointed to the glowing paper-cutout.
"The fake Sun? Hard to miss", Ji Chang replied.
"If the Sun glows... what about the painted mountains, flowers?" Feng Bu Jue mused. "Could they be interactive?"
The team reexamined the environment, suddenly spotting clues.
"The cow in the painting seems closest to the wall", Hong Hu noted.
Feng Bu Jue approached, spotting a rope protruding from the wall. Pulling it, he dragged the painted rope—and the cow—into the 3D space.
"It worked!" Qiu Feng exclaimed.
"Can we enter the paintings?" Ji Chang asked.
Feng Bu Jue pressed the wall. "Not for us. Try it."
Hong Hu and Qiu Feng confirmed it.
"How to use the cow?" Hong Hu pondered. "Maybe it’ll headbutt us to the fifth layer?"
"In Tom and Jerry’s world, maybe", Qiu Feng joked.
Suddenly, a child’s voice blared: "Misters!"
A figure emerged from a wall painting, running toward them—a scruffy boy in patched clothes.
"Please... give me back the cow!" he gasped. "My mom saw the Magic Beans you gave me. She threw them out, called me a fool. I retrieved them—can I trade for the cow?"
"Discuss", Feng Bu Jue whispered, pulling the team aside.
"Jack from Magic Beans", Qiu Feng realized. "Trade the beans, get to the fifth floor."
"Why the huddle?" Hong Hu asked.
"Just seeking opinions", Feng Bu Jue said. "Should we slap him and steal the beans?"
"Monstrous!"
"Extinct humanity!"
"Targeting kids?!"
Feng Bu Jue sighed, then smiled at Jack. "Of course, little buddy~" He handed the rope. "Remember: honor contracts, doubt strangers, think before acting. Make your mom proud, serve the Party and nation, contribute to humanity..."
Hong Hu and Qiu Feng clamped his mouth shut.
"Sorry about that, Jack", Ji Chang handed the beans. "Go home."
Jack blinked, thanked them, and led the cow away.
