Chapter 31: A Bold Idea
After the reminder, Professor Mcgonagall ignored Ivan and officially began the day's lesson—using a Transfiguration Spell to turn any personal item into a Button.
For Ivan, who had already advanced his Transfiguration Spell to level three, this was a piece of cake. With a gentle flick of his Wand, he transformed the quill on the table into a round Button, the intricate circular patterns still faintly visible. To earn extra points, Ivan had pushed the Transfiguration Spell to its limits.
Professor Mcgonagall, passing by, nodded in satisfaction and awarded Ivan a point, albeit with a restrained demeanor.
However, the other young Wizards were not so skilled. Successfully casting the Transfiguration Spell was already considered a good level, and the Buttons they created were of all sorts of strange and bizarre shapes.
Seamus Finnigan, who was sitting not far in front of Ivan, even managed to explode the inkwell he was trying to Transfigure, splattering the nearby young Wizard's face with black ink.
Ivan even saw one young Wizard who, in a desperate attempt to fake it, tore a Button off his clothes, pretending it was his creation. Unfortunately for him, Professor Mcgonagall was not senile enough to be fooled easily and quickly identified the deception. The result was a trip to the front of the class to stand as punishment.
After witnessing Ivan's impressive Transfiguration Spell, Professor Mcgonagall's standards were raised significantly. Apart from Hermione's Button, which was still quite good, the rest left much to be desired.
Professor Mcgonagall clapped her hands to draw everyone's attention.
"Everyone, stop your Transfiguration magic for a moment. Who can tell me the key points of casting a Transfiguration Spell?" Professor Mcgonagall asked.
"Professor, a Transfiguration Spell is a highly advanced form of magic that requires the caster to visualize the desired shape in their mind. The more similar the object being Transfigured is to the desired shape and the closer their properties, the easier the transfiguration will be. Additionally, transfiguring living beings is much more difficult than inanimate objects, and only a few highly skilled Wizards can accomplish it", Ivan said.
"Mr. Hals, I believe I warned you—"
Professor Mcgonagall's reflexes kicked in, and she was about to scold Ivan, but then she turned and saw that Ivan was raising his hand properly, looking dazed.
"Miss Granger? How did you—"
Professor Mcgonagall realized that the one who had answered was the usually well-behaved Hermione Granger. Despite her trembling from nervousness, Hermione held her head high and said confidently.
"Professor, is what I said correct?"
"Of course, and quite comprehensive. However, given your behavior, I cannot award you any points", Professor Mcgonagall said, still shocked and somewhat stuttering before finally gesturing for Hermione to sit down.
Hermione's expression was slightly disappointed, but seeing Ivan's dazed and raised hand, a smile crept onto her lips.
Ivan slowly lowered his hand, his mind full of confusion. He wondered if he was dreaming or if the Hermione in front of him was an imposter.
Like Ivan, Harry and Ron also found Hermione's behavior strange. As soon as class ended, Ron couldn't help but complain.
"What's with Hermione? I actually saw her stand up in Professor Mcgonagall's class without permission today. Oh, I think Professor Mcgonagall must have been stunned."
Ron, expecting Harry and Ivan to join in the complaints, turned around when he heard no response and found Hermione standing right behind them.
"H-Hermione", Ron said, surprised.
"I just want to win back the House Points I lost. Besides, it's not against Hogwarts rules, and Professor Mcgonagall will understand!" Hermione glared at Ron and then looked at Ivan, stammering a bit.
"Ivan, Ron and Harry told me that you came looking for me yesterday, which is why you encountered the Troll. Thank you!"
"It's nothing, we're friends, aren't we?" Ivan said with a smile.
Although Ivan had been a bit annoyed with Hermione for disrupting his plan when fighting the Troll, he understood that it was mostly his own mistake in choosing the location. Thankfully, the outcome wasn't bad, so he didn't hold a grudge.
"Right", Hermione smiled and nodded, then added, "I'll work hard to earn back the lost House Points as soon as possible."
Ivan felt a bit of a headache. If Hermione worked hard, his plan to earn Academic Points by answering questions to improve his Potions skills would be significantly compromised.
"You were only docked ten points by Professor Dumbledore, right? You've already earned them back in class, haven't you?"
Ivan was puzzled. Ten points weren't that significant compared to the House Points Hermione had earned through answering questions over the past few weeks.
"Actually, as of now, I've earned a total of 67 House Points", Hermione emphasized, and she glared at Ivan for a while. If it weren't for Ivan's shameless habit of answering questions, she would have earned even more.
"Why are you still—"
"I remember you saying you would earn back ten times, a hundred times more", Hermione said, smiling.
Ivan was speechless, wishing he could go back a few weeks and strangle his past self for speaking so rashly.
As they walked, Ivan tried hard to persuade Hermione to drop her disrespectful plans, but to little avail. The determined Miss Know-It-All seemed unwilling to change her mind.
Eventually, the conversation shifted to academics, and Ivan was surprised to discover that Hermione, with her extraordinary memory, had a stronger theoretical knowledge base in some subjects than he did.
Of course, this was partly because he had spent the past few weeks focusing on improving his practical skills, using half of his Academic Points to train in the Room of Requirement.
Even so, Hermione's knowledge was already quite formidable.
Harry and Ron, trailing behind, couldn't join the conversation because they didn't understand a word of what Hermione and Ivan were discussing.
Each word made sense individually, but together, they were incomprehensible.
Was this what it was like to have a conversation between Top Students? Harry and Ron felt a bit out of place.
*Ding* After a period of discussion, your Basic Spell Theory proficiency has slightly increased.
While discussing spell principles with Hermione, Ivan heard the notification in his mind and stopped in his tracks. He checked his System Panel and saw that his Basic Spell Theory proficiency had indeed increased by a few points.
This gave Ivan a bold idea.
