Chapter 309: It Was You All Along
Chapter 309: It Was You All Along
Albert had no plans to return home for the holidays, which put Nia in a sour mood. To express her displeasure, she included a photo of Tom with a large, goofy grin in the Easter package she sent, along with the usual treats.
Compared to Albert, Fred and George had an even more disappointing Easter. Percy had snitched on their plan to send Ron a box of spiders as a birthday gift, telling Mrs. Weasley about it.
As a result, the twins received a stern scolding through their letters, and their Easter treats were significantly reduced. All they got were some homemade toffees, each no bigger than a chicken egg.
Fred and George glowered as they held their respective toffees, their faces lengthened in dismay. "That good-for-nothing Percy actually snitched on us!" they grit out through clenched teeth.
"Who else but you two would always be up to no good!" Lee Jordan chimed in, his face filled with schadenfreude. However, his joy was short-lived as he realized that he, too, would not be receiving an Easter egg this year.
Lee's family had gone on a trip before the Easter holidays and had only sent him some photos of their travels.
He felt utterly dejected, so much so that he nearly retreated to a corner to sulk.
Fred and George's amusement didn't last long either as they gazed at their meager treats.
Albert, on the other hand, was feeling generous and shared his abundance of Easter goodies with his roommates. After all, food was always more enjoyable when shared with friends.
Instead of heading to the library, they worked on their holiday assignments while snacking, surrounded by a few girls from their year who traded and sampled each other's Easter treats and chatted about recent happenings.
They owed this leisurely time to having completed a large portion of their homework beforehand.
Other students weren't as fortunate to have such a relaxed Easter holiday, as the break proved to be anything but relaxing for most.
"And they call this a holiday?! What are they thinking?!"
A third-year student finally snapped, howling in the common room as if on the brink of a nervous breakdown. And he wasn't the only one feeling this way.
Percy Weasley was in a similar predicament, burdened with holiday assignments from twelve different subjects. The workload was overwhelming, keeping him constantly on edge, and to make matters worse, Fred and George were always up to something mischievous.
He had no choice but to retreat to the library to work, hoping to avoid the twins' pranks.
"What are you guys talking about?" Albert asked curiously as he entered the common room, noticing the giggling girls.
"We were discussing what we'd do with the money if we win the Wizarding Monopoly Championship," Angelina replied with a wink.
"You sure are confident," Albert remarked, tongue-in-cheek, wondering if they were trying to jinx themselves to ensure a loss.
"Why did you decide to spend money on hosting that competition, anyway?" Hannah asked, more intrigued by Albert's motivation than the girls' plans for the prize money.
"It's an investment, really. A way to promote Wizarding Monopoly. I think it can turn a profit," Albert explained. "If I don't find a job I like after leaving Hogwarts, I can always focus on this."
"That's not a bad idea," Hannah admitted, impressed by Albert's foresight. "With time, Wizarding Monopoly might just become a popular game, and you could make a good profit."
Indeed, Wizarding Monopoly had proven to be an enjoyable pastime for them, and the occasional game had even helped improve their relationships.
The door to the common room swung open, and Fred and George strutted in, their chests puffed out like they had just won the Quidditch Cup. In their hands was an Easter egg, a clear sign of their triumph.
"Percy's Easter treats!" Fred announced triumphantly as he began distributing the toffees. "He had to compensate us since he was the reason our Easter eggs were so pathetic."
"Oh, and Katrina asked me to give this to you," George added, pulling out a roll of parchment from his pocket and handing it to Albert.
"Must be a love letter," someone teased.
The girls pricked up their ears, eager to listen in on the potential romance.
"What's with that imagination of yours?" Albert rolled his eyes at the suggestion.
The message was from Katrina, asking him to visit Professor Snape's office.
Albert suspected that Professor Snape needed something from him and had asked Katrina to pass on the message, which wasn't unusual.
As he knocked and entered, he saw Katrina opening the door for him.
"What does Professor Snape want from me?" Albert began, only to hear the professor's voice in his ear.
"Legilimens!"
Suddenly, a peculiar sensation enveloped Albert, and he felt light and carefree, his mind emptied of all thoughts and worries, leaving only a vague, indescribable joy.
He stood there, feeling relaxed and carefree, his consciousness fuzzy and indistinct.
Then, he heard Professor Snape's voice echoing in his hollow mind: "Give me your wand."
Instinctively, Albert reached into his pocket and handed over his wand.
His consciousness was blurry, and he vaguely sensed that something was amiss.
"Now, go and get me the map of the Gryffindor secret passageways," Professor Snape instructed.
Albert turned silently and headed toward the Gryffindor dormitory.
As he reached the corner of the corridor, he felt a light tap on his head, and the cavernous emptiness in his mind began to fade.
Albert froze, his body trembling slightly as he tried to resist the Legilimency. His body felt uncoordinated, and he stumbled to the ground.
When Albert picked himself up, his expression was grim. The Legilimency spell that Professor Snape had cast on him had completely worn off.
However, he clearly remembered what had just transpired, and his expression darkened further.
Albert never imagined that Professor Snape would use Legilimency on him within the school premises.
Had he gone mad?
What was he trying to accomplish?
And that idiot Katrina was probably under his control as well.
Albert's ability to resist the Legilimency spell was largely due to his two lifetimes' worth of experiences, a strong will, and his inherently powerful magic.
Katrina, on the other hand, didn't stand a chance against the spell, and if she had tried to break free, it would have only made Professor Snape more wary and prompted him to use an even stronger spell on her.
Whose luck is worse, yours or mine?
Having broken free from the spell, Albert made his way back to the dormitory, contemplating how to handle the situation.
Should he report this to Dumbledore?
Or should he... handle it himself?
His wand had been taken by Snape, who likely believed that without it, he was powerless.
Hmph! Albert had anticipated Snape's moves and had a few tricks up his sleeve.
If that's the case... then...
