Chapter 309: Hermione's Gift (Third Update)
Chapter 309: Hermione's Gift (Third Update)
"Can't believe that little thing has grown into such a fine young lady!"
Seeing Hermione sprint over, Jerry couldn't help but let out a sigh.
He remembered the first time he met Hermione, a proud and tiny girl, in Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions in Diagon Alley when he first arrived in this world.
In just two years, she had transformed into a vibrant young woman, radiating a lively and youthful energy.
It really felt like watching a neighbor's girl grow up.
"How was your holiday?"
Gently hugging Hermione as she rushed to him, Jerry took the meowing Crookshanks and smiled, asking.
Hermione's face turned slightly red as she pulled out a gemstone necklace with the Merlin Array engraved on it from her neckline:
"I had a great time, thank you for the gift! It has been very helpful for my studies!"
"That's good to hear. Hey, your hair and teeth seem different from before."
Jerry nodded first, then suddenly noticed that Hermione's once frizzy and disheveled hair had become much smoother, and her rabbit-like front teeth had shrunk to a normal size.
She also seemed to have applied a light touch of makeup, which completely changed her overall appearance.
Hermione wasn't actually unattractive; her features were quite delicate when examined closely. It was just her frizzy hair, large front teeth, and lack of grooming that sometimes made her look like a nerd.
But to Jerry, she was still quite cute.
"I found a Magic Hair Conditioner in Magic Street in France, and it worked wonders. As for my teeth, I learned a new spell. Do you think it looks good?"
Hermione ran her fingers through her smooth brown hair, her face slightly flushed.
When a girl starts to have a crush, no matter how clueless or indifferent to her appearance she may have been before, she will gradually learn to take care of herself.
When Hermione received the necklace Jerry had sent her while she was in France, the vague feelings in her heart suddenly became clear.
She began to pay attention to her appearance, asking her mother for tips on grooming, and even scoured the entire Magic Street for products to make her hair smoother.
In the bookstore, she no longer just looked for materials on French magic history but also carefully searched for spells to shrink her front teeth.
"Umm, it's pretty good!"
Jerry felt something was off about the current atmosphere.
"By the way, Dad, could you come over and give me my bag?"
Hermione seemed to remember something and waved to Mr. Granger, who stood behind her.
Mr. Granger glanced at his wife with a helpless look and walked over with a handbag.
His expression clearly showed that he wasn't too happy.
"I learned how to knit scarves from Mom during the summer. This is a scarf I knitted myself using Magic Yarn I bought in Magic Street in France. It's my way of saying thank you!"
Hermione took the handbag from her father and pulled out a gray scarf.
The scarf, as if sensing Hermione's intention, flew from her hand and landed on Jerry's shoulders, wrapping around his neck twice and tying itself into a neat bow.
"Thank you, it's very pretty, and I love it!"
Although it was only about 13 or 14 degrees in London in September, wearing a scarf still felt a bit odd.
But seeing Hermione's hopeful expression, Jerry smiled and expressed his appreciation for the scarf she had knitted herself.
Gifts are a common way to show appreciation among friends, and Jerry didn't think much of it.
However, Mr. Granger, standing behind Hermione, was looking at Jerry with a jealous expression. He was eventually silenced by a stern look from Mrs. Granger, preventing him from saying anything that might ruin the mood.
"I’m glad you like it. Mom told me that the first gift she ever gave Dad was a scarf she knitted herself!"
Hermione looked down at her toes and muttered in a voice as soft as a mosquito’s.
"..."
Jerry’s ears were incredibly sharp. Even though Hermione’s voice was very low, he heard her clearly. He wasn’t really dense, so he was momentarily stunned.
Fortunately, at that moment, Ron and Harry approached, laughing and joking.
"Jerry, Hermione, check out my new wand! It’s made of willow, fourteen inches long, and has a unicorn tail hair inside!"
Previously, Ron had been using his brother’s old wand, which didn’t suit him at all, often causing all sorts of problems when he tried to cast spells.
This time, thanks to Arthur winning the big prize from the Daily Prophet, they finally managed to buy him a new wand that matched him perfectly.
"Meow~┗|`O′|┛Roar~~"
Seemingly sensing something, Crookshanks’s fur bristled, and the cat poked its head out of Jerry’s arms, letting out a threatening meow in Ron’s direction.
Crookshanks had the Cat-Kitsune Bloodline, which allowed him to sense nearby malevolence. Although Ron didn’t have any malicious intent, the pet Scabbers in his pocket, who was actually Peter Pettigrew, was radiating intense malice.
"Oh, Jerry, hold it tight. Scabbers isn’t feeling well after our trip to Egypt; he can’t afford to be scared again!"
Ron saw Jerry’s Crookshanks and immediately covered the trembling Scabbers in his pocket.
When Jerry had Crookshanks, the cat stayed in the Slytherin Dormitory, so there were no issues.
However, last semester, because Hermione loved Crookshanks so much, Jerry gave the cat to her to take care of. This led to frequent chases in the Gryffindor Dormitory, with Crookshanks pursuing Scabbers everywhere.
Before Jerry could respond, Hermione stepped forward to protect Crookshanks, saying:
"It’s just a cat. Chasing mice is in their nature. Don’t be so harsh; you’ll scare it!"
"I scare it, I—"
Ron’s lips twitched as he was about to retort, but Jerry cut him off with a smile:
"Alright, I’ll keep an eye on Crookshanks. It’s getting late, let’s go buy our new textbooks!"
Jerry knew that Scabbers’ condition wasn’t due to the Egyptian climate but because he had heard about Sirius Black’s escape from Azkaban, which terrified him.
Everyone assumed Sirius Black had escaped to kill Harry Potter in revenge for Voldemort. Only Peter Pettigrew, the cowardly rat, knew that Sirius Black had escaped to kill him. How could he not be afraid?
However, Jerry knew it wasn’t the right time to expose Peter Pettigrew, so he didn’t pursue the matter further and changed the subject.
"I’ve already bought everything I need these past few days, but I can go with you guys!"
Harry chimed in.
So, the Weasleys and the Grangers stayed at the Leaky Cauldron chatting, while Jerry, Hermione, and the others headed to Diagon Alley for their pre-school shopping.
