Chapter 309: Evidence of Guilt (1)
Chapter 309: Evidence of Guilt (1)
As Su Heyuan was about to hang up after his conversation, he suddenly remembered something and dialed Lu Jiaxin's number again.
"Why did Nie Zhan move out of the Nie family mansion yesterday?" Su Heyuan asked.
"Mmm," Su Heyuan replied before continuing, "Jiaxin, I suspect this has something to do with you."
Lu Jiaxin was perplexed. What did her relationship with Nie Zhan have to do with his moving out? She hadn't had any interactions with the Nie family while she was away traveling. "Big Brother Su, is there something you're not telling me?"
Su Heyuan had originally intended to keep her trip enjoyable and not worry her, but now he had no choice but to tell her, "The He family is bad-mouthing you outside, saying that you're cunning and deceitful. They claim that while you publicly refused to accept Ms. Gu's inheritance, you actually pocketed all her private savings. On top of that, they're spreading rumors that you're involved with multiple men."
Lu Jiaxin's face turned pale.
"Don't be angry," Su Heyuan said. "The He family has connections with underground societies, which aren't something we can deal with. It's good that you're aware and prepared."
Lu Jiaxin expressed her gratitude.
Su Heyuan felt that she was being too polite. "With our kind of relationship, it's a bit much to keep thanking me like that. By the way, an old friend of my grandfather wants to play matchmaker for me. That young lady is also traveling abroad, and we'll be arranged to meet when she returns."
With the older generation taking the initiative to arrange a match, it seemed that Su Heyuan's development had gained the recognition of the elders. Lu Jiaxin, understanding his character, asked, "What does the young lady do?"
Su Heyuan didn't hide anything from Lu Jiaxin and shared that the young lady worked in construction. "Someone invited me to invest in real estate, and I'm considering it."
The big tycoons of Hong Kong City were involved in both finance and real estate, and the next decade promised rapid development in the real estate industry. However, that didn't guarantee profits, and there were certainly losers in the game.
After some thought, Lu Jiaxin said, "I'm not familiar with the real estate industry myself, so I can't offer much insight there. But if you're going to partner with someone, make sure they're reliable."
Su Heyuan smiled and said, "Nie Zhan has a piece of land he wants to develop, and he invited me to invest. Unfortunately, I don't have enough funds, so I had to decline."
He had purchased Lu Jiaxin's 30% stake, incurring a debt of 26 million. 10 million of that was borrowed from his grandfather, interest-free, and could be paid back slowly. He had already repaid 5 million of the remaining 14 million and planned to clear the debt within two months. Before, he had thought that having tens of millions was a lot, but now he realized that it wasn't nearly enough for business ventures. However, this incident confirmed one thing—the old man must have had assets worth over 100 million; otherwise, he wouldn't have been so generous.
Lu Jiaxin smiled and said, "There will be other opportunities in the future, so don't rush."
Su Heyuan deliberately mentioned this matter to her because he had a reason. "With so much cash on hand, it's not safe to keep it all in the stock market. I think Nie Zhan's project will be profitable."
Lu Jiaxin didn't mention that she had other plans for her money; she merely indicated that she didn't want to do business with Nie Zhan for the time being. "We can do business together after we're married, but not while we're just dating."
The laws of Hong Kong City offered special protection to the wealthy. Even without a prenuptial agreement, marrying into a wealthy family or marrying a rich spouse didn't entitle one to their partner's assets in a divorce. The most one could get was some alimony.
Understanding Lu Jiaxin's strong personality, Su Heyuan didn't try to persuade her further.
After hanging up, Lu Jiaxin called Gu Wenfeng into the room and told him about the He family's smear campaign against her. "Brother Gu, I can't just sit here and do nothing. He Zhuliang and his wife are treacherous, greedy, and narrow-minded. I won't be able to rest easy until I bring them down."
Gu Wenfeng also felt that He Zhuliang and his wife were dangerous. However, they had connections with underground societies, while Lu Jiaxin had no backing at all. It wouldn't be easy to bring them down.
After some thought, Gu Wenfeng said, "Boss, let's first hire a private investigator to secretly gather evidence of He Zhuliang's misdeeds. When the time is right, we'll hand the evidence over to the police."
Lu Jiaxin shook her head. "Hiring a private investigator will definitely alert him. Also, Nie Zhan once mentioned that He Zhuliang often engages in illegal activities and has even bribed government officials. If we hand over the evidence to the police, those officials might destroy the evidence to protect themselves."
Gu Wenfeng couldn't think of a better idea either. "If we were in the mainland, we could just hand over the evidence to the authorities and have them all arrested."
Lu Jiaxin hadn't called Gu Wenfeng in for his suggestions but rather to ask for his help. "If my guess is correct, Aunt Gu should have evidence of He Zhuliang's illegal activities. You get hold of that evidence and then find a way to pass it to He Shengbin and his son."
"He Zhuliang has made their lives miserable. They must hate him enough to want to tear him limb from limb. If they get their hands on the evidence, they won't let him off the hook."
Of course, this was just her initial idea, and she would need to discuss it with Aunt Gu before deciding whether to go through with it, as Aunt Gu knew the He family best.
Gu Wenfeng asked, "Are you sure that Ms. Gu has evidence of He Zhuliang's misdeeds?"
Lu Jiaxin nodded. "Look at how He Zhuliang behaves. If Aunt Gu didn't have something on him, how could she have moved into the Gu residence and lived comfortably? With his vicious character, he would have found a way to get rid of her long ago."
Gu Wenfeng realized she was right. He had been so focused on the current state of Gu Xiuxiu that he had overlooked this: "Boss, I can arrange for someone to handle this matter. That way, even when something happens to He Zhuliang, he won't suspect you."
"Do you have any reliable people here in Hong Kong City?"
Gu Wenfeng shook his head, indicating that while he had made some acquaintances in the city, he wouldn't dare to entrust such an important matter to them. "I plan to request assistance from my leadership. This matter concerns your personal safety, and I believe they will agree."
Lu Jiaxin had been waiting for these words. Whether it was hiring a private investigator or seeking help from Nie Zhan, there was a risk of exposure. But if Uncle Xie was willing to help, He Zhuliang wouldn't be able to trace it back to her.
Gu Wenfeng said, "We can't directly contact the leadership here. It would be safer to make a trip back to Si Jiucheng. But while I'm gone, Xiao Xiao is useless, and I'm not sure if we can rely solely on Zong Jinghua."
Lu Jiaxin didn't see this as a problem. "If you're not reassured, I can stay in the hotel and not go anywhere until you return."
This was a five-star hotel, after all. Even if the outside world was unsafe, places like this maintained good security, as they catered to the rich and influential.
Gu Wenfeng nodded.
Only then did Lu Jiaxin call Gu Xiuxiu. The call was answered by Mei Gu, who said that Gu Xiuxiu was resting.
Lu Jiaxin knew that Mei Gu was someone Gu Xiuxiu trusted deeply. She asked, "Aunt Mei, I asked you to reinstall the phone before. Has that been done?"
Previously, the phone in Gu Xiuxiu's bedroom on the second floor had been an extension of the phone in the living room on the first floor. Anyone in the living room could pick up and listen in on conversations. After reclaiming the house, Lu Jiaxin had asked Mei Gu to reinstall a separate phone line in the bedroom.
Mei Gu's heart skipped a beat, but she maintained her composure and calmly replied that the phone had been installed but wasn't used much. She then provided the new phone number.
