Chapter 308: An Unexpected Appearance
Chapter 308: An Unexpected Appearance
"I offered to help, but now that you've fainted, I'm out of here." Terumi Mei pushed back Konoha Genma and Ebisu, preparing to flee.
Kisame's squad had been completely wiped out, and one of her teammates was down. With four or five capable fighters on the Konoha ninjas' side, Mei had no desire to be surrounded and beaten down by a group of them.
"If you want to leave, it's simple. Hand over the scroll," Obito called out after a moment's thought.
His battle with Mei, though intense, had a restrained feel to it. After injuring Obito, Mei hadn't pressed her advantage further.
However, letting Mei go scot-free was out of the question. There were no such easy escapes in life, and since she had joined the fight, she would have to leave something behind.
As Mei had joined the battle for the scroll, Obito intended to take it from her, even though they already possessed the Heaven scroll.
"My bad luck this time," Mei said decisively as she took out a white scroll from her ninja tool pouch and threw it to Obito.
If she lost the scroll, she could always take it back by force. Mei was confident in her abilities, but if she were badly injured, it would be troublesome, and she might lose the scroll anyway. Whether she stayed or fled, she would lose the scroll, so Mei chose to preserve her strength.
Tossing the scroll was Mei's concession of defeat. Might Guy, who had been rushing towards Mei, halted his steps, and Rin Nohara also stopped fighting the Kirigakure genin, turning instead to tend to Obito's injuries.
The Kirigakure genin who had been entangled with Rin also rushed to check on his teammates. Finding they still had a pulse, he immediately began administering first aid.
With the battle truly over, Kakashi let out a sigh of relief, his tensed body finally relaxing.
However, Kakashi didn't rest. Instead, he began to scour the battlefield, collecting the Heaven and Earth scrolls from Kisame's squad.
"Guy-sensei, are you missing any scrolls?" Kakashi asked as he approached Guy, holding the two scrolls in his hand.
He couldn't let Guy and his team help them for nothing. Even if they needed the Earth scroll, Kakashi would give them the only one he had.
"We have the Earth scroll, but we're missing a Heaven scroll," Guy replied.
Kakashi directly handed over the white scroll with the character for Heaven on it to Guy. This way, both teams would have what they needed for the exam, and they would even have an extra Heaven scroll.
"Great! Now we can head straight to the central tower," Genma said excitedly.
The exam was turning out to be easier than he had anticipated. When he had signed the consent form, he had been nervous because, as a rookie who had graduated just a few months ago, he would be engaging in life-or-death battles with seniors who had graduated years ago.
But in just a few hours, they had easily obtained what they needed to pass the exam, and Genma couldn't help but feel thrilled at the idea of hitching a ride on someone else's coattails.
"Yeah, we'll head to the central tower once we've recovered," Kakashi nodded in agreement.
Now that they had fulfilled the exam requirements, it was best to make their way to the central tower as soon as possible.
"We've truly encountered an extraordinary group of geniuses," Nara Yuzuki, who had watched the entire battle, remarked in awe.
Obito's fire release and Sharingan, Kakashi's speed and swordsmanship, and Guy's taijutsu had all left him astonished. It was hard to imagine how they had trained to achieve such formidable strength at their age.
"Green thinks so too. They're amazing," Inuzuka Wakaba agreed, nodding. Her evaluation of Guy's taijutsu consisted of just two words: terrifying.
Everyone believed the battle was over and relaxed, discussing the events that had just transpired.
Obito, basking in the healing provided by Rin, boasted about Mei's strength, whom he had faced off against.
"She must be Kirigakure's super genius. I've never seen or even heard of anyone whose ninjutsu can transform into another ninjutsu after being released," Obito declared confidently.
After all, if he spun it this way, his loss would be more understandable. He could blame it on his subpar condition and the fact that his ninjutsu was countered, and he had faced a fellow genius. Losing under these circumstances was reasonable.
"Mmhmm, you did very well this time, Obito," Rin nodded gently with a soft smile.
Obito had indeed contributed significantly to this battle. At the start, he had held off Kisame and Kurozawa single-handedly, buying Kakashi time to deal with Momochi Zabuza, and later, he had kept the powerful Mei at bay. Although it appeared that no one had emerged victorious from their fights, Obito's contribution was undeniable.
"Although I lost to her this time, next time, I'll definitely win," Obito said, looking to the future.
From what Kakashi had shared, the first two stages of the Chunin Exams would vary, but the third stage was essentially the same as the practical exam at the Ninja Academy—a single draw elimination match.
Obito wanted to face Mei again in the third stage when he was at his peak condition.
"I believe in you, Obito," Rin smiled encouragingly at him.
"Haha..." Obito was about to return the compliment when a sudden flash of movement caused his pupils to contract. "Rin, watch out!"
Bang!
A black-clad adult ninja suddenly appeared beside Rin and kicked her away from Obito, who had been receiving treatment.
"Is that all you've got?" The black-clad ninja easily caught Obito's fist, swung him around, and slammed him into a large tree, the force of the impact strong enough to snap the tree in half.
This sudden turn of events startled everyone.
"Another one from Kirigakure, why is he alone, and why don't I recognize him at all?" Kakashi first identified the black-clad ninja by the forehead protector he wore, and then his brows furrowed in confusion.
There were a total of ten squads from Kirigakure participating in this Chunin Exam, and while Kakashi's memory was decent, even if he hadn't memorized every detail about each participant, he was sure he hadn't seen this unexpected newcomer before.
"Could it be a transformation technique?" Kakashi wondered, noting that the black-clad ninja appeared to be in his thirties, an unlikely age for a Chunin Exam candidate.
However, he quickly dismissed the idea, as the Chunin Exam wasn't the kind of mission one would need to disguise themselves for, and there was no reason to use a transformation technique when killing someone.
If there was only one remaining option, no matter how improbable, then it had to be the truth.
"We have an intruder who's not a participant!" Kakashi's expression turned grim.
"Rock Lee, open the first five gates of the Eight Inner Gates and focus your breath!" Might Guy immediately activated his Eight Inner Gates and rushed towards the black-clad ninja from Kirigakure, engaging him in close combat.
The two fighters exchanged blows at incredible speed. Despite facing Might Guy, who had opened two gates and was focusing his breath, the black-clad ninja showed no signs of backing down. He wielded his short blade with exceptional skill, and within just half a minute, Might Guy's clothes bore several gashes.
"Hey, they didn't mention this part when they assigned me this mission," Kurozawa said, his face paling as he watched the Kirigakure ninja before him.
The intrusion of the Kirigakure ninja into the Chunin Exam and his assault on the Konoha genin meant that Kurozawa could already see his death approaching.
He wasn't afraid of dying, but he felt betrayed by the higher-ups in Kirigakure.
"Hahaha, so this is Kirigakure? How laughable." Zabuza's face twisted into a mocking smile.
"Do you know who he is?" Kakashi, who had been about to join the fight, paused and turned to Zabuza for information.
"His name is Kiji Hideyuki, an elite Jonin who almost became one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen," Zabuza replied, offering what he knew.
At that moment, Zabuza remained unusually calm, as it was reasonable for unexpected events to occur during a graduation exam where students were killing each other.
"I wonder if your blade, which you use to protect your comrades, will be of any use this time. That guy is far beyond any of us," Zabuza said, almost as if he were watching a show.
In his mind, both he and Kakashi were as good as dead, it was just a matter of who would kill them.
The reason Zabuza knew about Kiji Hideyuki was that this man had been his mentor, an elite Jonin with exceptional strength, and killing a few talented but unprepared young ninjas would be child's play for him.
"A Jonin from Kirigakure..." Kakashi's brow furrowed, ignoring Zabuza's comment, he rushed forward, using his breathing technique to assist Might Guy in fighting Kiji Hideyuki.
By now, Might Guy had already opened the third gate, but he still struggled to counter Kiji Hideyuki's fierce offense. The fluidity of his water-style jutsu coupled with his adept bladework pushed Might Guy to his limits.
Undoubtedly, this black-clad ninja was stronger than the Cloud ninja they had faced before!
Hiashi Hyuga and Ebisu tried to join the fight but were quickly injured.
"He's so strong," Hiashi muttered in shock, clutching his injured arm.
For the first time, Hiashi had felt the breath of death upon his neck. If not for Might Guy, he felt that both he and Ebisu would have been defeated in an instant.
"He doesn't look like a participant," Ebisu added, having noticed something odd about Kiji Hideyuki as well.
Kakashi joined the battle, and Rin, after a brief moment of self-treatment, followed suit. However, their addition only slightly eased Might Guy's burden and did not turn the tide of the battle.
In less than two minutes, those engaged with Kiji Hideyuki bore several bloody wounds.
Kakashi and Rin, who had already been through multiple battles, were in poor condition.
"Give up and your deaths will be easier," Kiji Hideyuki said casually, his gaze drifting to the distant Obito, who was struggling to catch his breath.
Obito was already injured, and the brief moment of treatment he received was interrupted by the sudden attack. Now, even walking at a faster pace caused him discomfort.
But Obito knew he couldn't fall, not when his comrades were still fighting, and not when they were at a disadvantage.
