Chapter 307: The Ambush
Chapter 307: The Ambush
The assistant argued, "That's the security gear assigned to Manager Zhao. It's provided by the company. Why can't he take it with him? If something happens to Manager Zhao, can you take responsibility for that?"
You Fen remained unmoved, his tone cold and unsympathetic. "In Central City, that's true. But during a transport mission, every individual is part of the convoy's defense force, including Manager Zhao himself. However, considering his physical discomfort, I personally agreed to let him return."
"If Manager Zhao feels this arrangement is inappropriate, he can send a telegraph to the headquarters to file a complaint. As long as the headquarters permit it, I personally have no objections."
Zhao Qian stopped the assistant from continuing the argument. Sending and receiving a telegraph would take a lot of time, and with his condition gradually worsening, he couldn't afford to delay any longer. He had to return as soon as possible, and with Chi Duan's escort, they should be able to handle most situations.
The assistant immediately understood his intent, swallowed his dissatisfaction with You Fen, and ordered this vehicle to detach from the convoy and stop behind it. Chi Duan also got into this car, making it easier to protect Zhao Qian.
The entire transport convoy drove forward through the billowing smoke and dust, while Zhao Qian's vehicle turned around and headed back towards Central City.
About twenty minutes later, when they were still some distance from Central City, a person suddenly appeared in the middle of the National Highway ahead.
Chi Duan straightened up and looked at the person. This scene felt strangely familiar to him. It was the same National Highway, the same imposing figure, and the same Chi Duan sitting in the luxury car, making him feel like time was distorted in this moment.
Zhao Qian was lying on the side seat. His keen senses detected something amiss, and he asked weakly, "What's going on?"
Chi Duan sighed and said, "Someone is blocking our way. Mr. Zhao, do you remember when I went to Yangzhi City? It was this person who stopped me."
Zhao Qian's expression changed abruptly at these words because he knew who Chi Duan was talking about. Even if he were in good condition at this moment, he and Chi Duan together might not be a match for this person.
Chi Duan considered for a moment and said, "I can try to hold him off for a while, but Mr. Zhao, you'll have to walk the rest of the way."
6: Zhao Qian decisively said, "That's the best decision."
The fighter could run faster than a vehicle in a short time, and it was easy for them to disrupt a car's balance and equipment. So, if no one confronted the fighter, he could easily overturn the vehicle. Hiding inside the car and avoiding the fight was not a good idea.
Someone had to go down and stop him.
Chi Duan turned to the assistant and said, "Take care of Manager Zhao." Then he pushed the door and went down.
Zhao Qian waited until Chi Duan's footsteps faded before whispering, "Drive!"
The driver responded and quickly turned the steering wheel to the side, increasing the speed.
Zhao Qian couldn't see the situation outside, but he could hear the sound of fists and feet colliding outside. As they passed a certain point, the car shook violently, as if it had jumped, and then it landed heavily and stabilized. The driver and assistant's breathing became rapid in an instant.
However, the car soon moved away from the sounds of the collision.
At this moment, Zhao Qian felt the abnormality in his body seemed to have disappeared. He regained some strength and took out a piece of paper from his pocket, handing it to the assistant. "Send this telegraph."
This was his backup plan, but he wasn't sure if it would be in time.
After the assistant sent the telegraph, Zhao Qian drank some water and put himself into a sleep state. He needed to use sleep to accelerate his recovery.
However, it seemed like he had only closed his eyes for a short while when he felt the car slowing down again. Zhao Qian was very sensitive to this change and opened his eyes immediately. He noticed that the assistant was tense, and his body seemed to be trembling slightly. Zhao Qian realized something and said in a low voice, "Help me up."
The assistant quickly helped him up. Zhao Qian looked ahead and saw a car parked by the roadside. A figure holding a long sword stood there, with a reddish-brown scarf covering the lower half of his face. The scarf danced in the wind.
The assistant was sweating profusely and said anxiously, "Manager, that's the uniform of the Bureau of Administration. What should we do?"
Zhao Qian stared at the figure, narrowing his eyes. He had never met Chen Chuan in person but had seen his photo. In that instant, he was sure that the person standing there was Chen Chuan. He thought for a moment and ordered the driver, "Go forward!"
"Yes."
The driver immediately stepped on the accelerator, increasing the speed and driving towards the figure. In fact, he had been thinking that when they encountered the fighter earlier, he should have just driven straight at him instead of getting out of the car.
Chen Chuan stood there holding the Snow Lady Saber, silently. Although they were not in the city, he couldn't see the scene of the Cult devouring someone like he did during the Shadow Traverse incident. But he could sense from the feedback of the Cult that this attack was not weak.
The return of this vehicle further proved that Zhao Qian had suffered a severe injury, forcing them to head back towards Central City.
Everything was as he had expected.
And now, it was time to settle things.
As he watched the vehicle accelerate towards him, instead of avoiding him, it drove forward and increased its speed. Just before the collision, Chen Chuan took a step to the left and spun, his long sword slicing horizontally towards the speeding car!
Zhao Qian's eyes widened in shock, and he leaned back abruptly.
The top of the vehicle's body was instantly sliced open by the blade, and as the sword cut through the metal protective panel, a trail of flickering sparks erupted, spreading from the front to the rear, nearly slicing through the entire roof!
Chen Chuan passed by the vehicle, stopping to observe. He turned back and saw that after a short distance, the vehicle became crooked and twisted. Although he had intentionally spared the driver, the shattered connection pillars and broken windows made it difficult for the driver to maintain control.
Chen Chuan took a step forward, and everything around him suddenly slowed down. His figure vanished and reappeared in mid-air, passing through the flying glass shards. In an instant, he reached the rear of the car, leaned his shoulder against it, and with a nudge, the entire vehicle lost its balance and slid sideways, crashing into the roadside guardrail before coming to a stop.
Chen Chuan reached up to adjust his fedora, holding the sword as he slowly approached the vehicle.
Inside the car, the driver sat frozen, afraid to move, watching as the figure in the rearview mirror gradually approached. The driver's face was filled with terror, now understanding why the vehicle had stopped.
Zhao Qian lay inside, his assistant unconscious from not wearing a seatbelt during the collision. Despite Zhao Qian's severe injuries, his fighter's physique allowed him to escape without a scratch.
At that moment, Zhao Qian quickly searched and pulled out a freezer from under the car seat. After opening it, a gust of cold air escaped, and he took out a syringe, injecting the scarlet liquid inside into his neck.
In an instant, a surge of power filled his entire body, and he seemed to regain his vitality. Taking a deep breath, he pulled a latch on the ceiling, and a double-bladed longsword dropped down.
He grabbed the sword and kicked open the car door, stepping out. Initially, he appeared weak, but once outside, he gradually straightened his body and approached Chen Chuan.
Zhao Qian stared at Chen Chuan's scarf, and after a few steps, his figure suddenly vanished from its original spot, only to reappear in front of Chen Chuan. He threw a punch towards him.
However, before the punch could land, a hand caught it, and simultaneously, the sword's sheath struck Zhao Qian's cheek, sending him flying.
In mid-air, Zhao Qian tried to adjust his body, but his altered organs and internal injuries made it impossible to control his movements. He fell heavily to the ground, rolling several times before pushing himself up with his hand and standing. He glared at Chen Chuan, thinking, 'He must have taken the drug.'
Zhao Qian had intended to use his Third Limit speed to defeat Chen Chuan in one go, but Chen Chuan somehow kept up with his movements, indicating that he had taken the drug beforehand.
Zhao Qian wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand, spitting out several broken teeth. He reached out, grabbed the sword, and lifted it, giving it a slight shake. The blade slid out from the side opening of the sheath, and he gripped the hilt with both hands, pointing the sword at Chen Chuan.
As Chen Chuan walked forward, he raised the Snow Lady Saber. With his other hand, he wiped the sheath, sending it flying. He took a stable step forward, aiming a low stab at Chen Chuan.
Chen Chuan lifted both hands, testing the sword's reach. Zhao Qian quickly retracted the blade, avoiding the sword. Then, with incredible speed, he thrust forward again. Chen Chuan's continuous sword technique followed with a downward slash. If Zhao Qian didn't change his attack, he would be cut in mid-air.
Zhao Qian altered his technique again, swiftly pulling the sword hilt upwards and twisting his waist and abdomen, attempting to use this force to parry Chen Chuan's attack. He then smoothly spun the sword, aiming to sweep it back up. This strike, if successful, would slice Chen Chuan in half.
However, as soon as their weapons made contact, a force was transmitted through the sword, and Chen Chuan felt the power surge. All martial techniques and stances required strength to support them, and without the support of his altered organs, he couldn't withstand this force. Not only did his planned sword technique fail to activate, but the longsword was also shaken out of his grasp.
In the next moment, Chen Chuan felt a chill as the sword pierced him. His body went limp, and the strength he had maintained with the drug quickly dissipated. Before he could collapse, his vision began to rise.
After stabbing Zhao Qian, Chen Chuan held the sword hilt with one hand and calmly asked, "Was it you who took away Xuejun's sister? Where is she now?"
Blood continued to flow from the corner of Zhao Qian's mouth, and he managed a sinister smile. "I won't tell you. You'll never find her."
At that moment, Chen Chuan became aware of someone crouching on top of the guardrail nearby. This person wore protective goggles and a motorcycle helmet, and on their arms were two narrow blades, seemingly held in place by implants.
Chen Chuan turned to look, and the person smiled, removing their goggles and standing up straight. They looked at Zhao Qian and said, "Are you the employer? Am I late or not?"
