Chapter 307: Holding You in My Hands
Chapter 307: Holding You in My Hands
The day the 'Strongest Squad' set out was the second day of the regular meeting.
Makarov, feeling at ease, was sound asleep during the meeting.
Anyway, if there was anything important, Rod would take notes and summarize it for him later.
If there was a need for Makarov to speak, Rod would step up and pretend it was his idea.
Bringing Rod to the meeting was the best decision; Makarov couldn't help but praise himself for his choice, even in his dreams.
The morning passed by peacefully, and Makarov eagerly awaited his favorite lunch time.
He thought he could have a drink and chat as usual, but today seemed slightly different.
At the busiest time of noon, a small bird with a pointed hat flew into the venue, holding a letter in its claws.
"Tweet~ Guild Master, a letter from Miss Mirajane for you," the bird spoke.
"Huh?" Makarov was dazed, his mind not fully awake.
Rod waved at the bird, "Pipi, come and eat something."
This was Miki's pet magic bird, which often turned into a microphone when Mirajane sang, so it had a good relationship with her.
Rod was also quite familiar with it.
Pipi didn't stand on ceremony with Rod, "I want some nuts, tweet~"
"I don't have any ready nuts, but there are some peanut crumbs on this cake. Make do with it," Rod shared his cake with the bird.
Birds like Pipi could eat both human food and bird food, just like Happy's preference for fish; it simply had a preference for nuts.
"Thank you. Tweet~" Pipi handed the envelope to Rod.
Makarov's brain started functioning again, "Isn't this letter for me?"
Pipi pecked at the cake a few times and took the time to reply, "Miss Mirajane said that if the Guild Master is drunk, you can give it to Mr. Rod instead, tweet~"
"..." Makarov was speechless. This seemed to be a valid point.
He began to wonder if Mirajane had sent Pipi on an important errand or if she had written a love letter.
Rod opened the envelope and unfolded the letter. Instead of words, a small projection of Mirajane's upper body appeared.
It was like a cute little figurine.
Upon seeing her, Rod's boredom and annoyance from the past two days vanished, replaced by a surge of longing.
The tiny Mirajane began to speak, "Guild Master, and Rod, thank you for your hard work at the regular meeting."
Makarov proudly showed off his guild's beautiful female mage to those around him, "Look, look, this is our guild's most famous beauty. Isn't she gorgeous?"
Some of the older members couldn't help but show their admiration.
"Please behave, fellow Guild Masters. She's my girlfriend," Rod said, holding the special letter like he was holding Mirajane in the palm of his hand.
Mirajane's projection was just a magic spell cast on the letter; she couldn't hear their conversation and couldn't respond.
She simply continued speaking according to Mirajane's recorded message, "Actually, something amazing happened while the Guild Master was away—Erza, Natsu, and Gray formed a team and went out together!"
Makarov's face began to sweat. What did she just say? He felt like he was losing his grasp of Common language.
"Because I think this might be the strongest team in the guild, I wanted to share this good news with you!"
Was this good news? Makarov's body started to tremble.
"Everything is going well in the guild. You all should work hard too. That's all!
Oh, and there's one more thing I want to say to Rod—I miss you a little, just a tiny bit!"
With each sentence, the tiny Mirajane accompanied her words with exaggerated gestures and adorable expressions.
When Rod heard her last words, his heart melted.
As her figure disappeared, Rod still felt a tinge of reluctance.
Rod decided to keep the letter as a memento, taking it out whenever he missed her.
"Pipi, can you help me send a reply later?"
"No problem!" Pipi was intently focused on tackling a cake almost as big as itself.
After all, I'm heading back anyway, and carrying a letter isn't a burden."
Rod wanted to write a letter with a projection, but he didn't know how.
"Guild Master, can you teach me how to write this kind of letter? Guild Master, Guild Master?"
Rod waved his hand in front of Makarov, but he remained as still as a statue.
A few seconds later, Makarov tilted his head back and fell to the ground, staring blankly at the ceiling, "How could this be? How could this be? If those few people get together, they might really destroy the city!"
"Guild Master, are you alright?"
"There's still hope!" Makarov jumped up, "Rod, it's all up to you now. Go and stop them quickly!"
"Don't joke around, Guild Master. We don't even know what they're up to, so how can we stop them?"
The last glimmer of hope was shattered. Indeed, not knowing their plans made it impossible to stop them.
The Kingdom of Fiore was vast, and a carpet search was out of the question.
Seeing the Guild Master's despondent expression, Rod consoled him, "It's just a team-up, Guild Master. There's no need to be so pessimistic. Erza is usually quite reliable."
"You don't understand. Those three together will have a terrifying reaction." Makarov paced anxiously, "We can return tomorrow at the earliest, and hopefully, nothing will happen."
Although Makarov said this, he felt restless all afternoon, even his nap during the meeting wasn't refreshing.
And as night fell, the unexpected finally happened.
"Guild Master, Rod," Mira entered the banquet hall with grace.
"Mila, you really came!" Rod rushed over joyfully and held both her hands.
Both of them wanted to give each other a hug, but with so many people watching, they felt too embarrassed.
"Mira? Why are you here?" Makarov was shocked, could the guild have been destroyed?
"Because it's after work, and Rod's reply said..." Mira touched her cheek, "Anyway, I rushed over on impulse."
Rod's words were too straightforward, and she felt too shy to repeat them.
Rod also raised his hand and touched her cheek gently, saying, "You've worked hard."
The two looked into each other's eyes, and Rod read a sentence in Mira's eyes - 'It's so good to see you.'
"Mira, you really..."
"Jenny, you're here too?" Mira affectionately held Rod's hand, as if showing off her boyfriend, "Didn't Rod bring any Magic Crystals this time?"
"You..." Jenny blushed.
"Just kidding~"
"Let's put aside the catching up for now." Makarov said anxiously, "What's going on with Erza, Natsu, and the others? Did they cause any trouble?"
Mira's words dashed Makarov's hopes, "Yes."
"Wh...what?"
"I was originally taking the train, but the Eusibauna Station is in chaos, and the railway bridge over Croba Canyon has suffered some damage..."
Mira smiled, "I think it's highly likely they did it; they caused quite a ruckus."
It was over... Makarov felt like he had been struck by lightning and had made a huge mistake.
"By the way, how did you get here? And where are the others?"
Mira gave Rod a reproachful glance and said, "Of course, I flew the last stretch, but I didn't see them on the way."
"No, I did." Rod said, "Those guys are nearby, and there's an uninvited guest with them."
