Chapter 307: Cecilia Nightblade
Chapter 307: Cecilia Nightblade
It was 8 PM on the 9th day, in the capital of the Hills Commercial Federation—Seaside Rock City.
The Hills Commercial Federation was a loosely organized confederation of six major commercial families. These families formed a council, and the Federation's Chancellor was rotated among the family patriarchs.
The current Chancellor of the Hills Federation was Derrick Gesang, the patriarch of the Gesang family, the most powerful of the six. He was a formidable figure, having recently ascended to the Fifth Rank.
That evening, the Gesang family's castle, Seasnake Keep, was hosting an extravagant and sensual ball in the grand banquet hall.
Noblemen and ladies, adorned with exquisite makeup, danced in the ballroom, their clothing barely covering their alluring figures. They sipped on various wines, their movements seductive and captivating.
Attractive, black-clad maidens in bunny outfits navigated the room, serving drinks to the guests. They were often subjected to lecherous gazes and unwelcome touches from the male attendees.
Derrick Gesang himself was mingling in the ballroom, dancing to the music with his partner, a seemingly innocent noble lady. His face was flushed from the alcohol, and he took advantage of the moment to grope his dance partner.
The noble lady did not resist, and as they continued to dance, they moved to the edge of the ballroom.
At this point, any reasonable person would know what was to come next. Derrick intended to take his partner to his room for a more private conversation.
Just then, an elderly butler in a black uniform appeared before him.
"Sir, there is a matter of utmost importance that requires your immediate attention," the butler said respectfully.
"Can't you see I'm busy?" Derrick, tipsy from the alcohol, tried to sidestep the butler, still holding onto his dance partner. He had no intention of dealing with the butler's concerns.
However, the butler moved to block his path, his tone serious. "Sir, this is a matter of the highest priority. If you do not attend to it now, you will no longer be the family patriarch by tomorrow."
Derrick: "..."
Five minutes later, Derrick, now sobered by the urgency, sat in a secluded meeting room, his mood soured.
Across from him was a guest—a Fifth Rank assassin shrouded in black mist.
The sight of this guest only added to his irritation. He recognized the man as Zachary, a high-ranking member of the city's criminal organization, the Light Travelers. In a way, they were old acquaintances.
Zachary sniffed the air, catching a whiff of alcohol, and couldn't help but chuckle. "Chancellor, if I'm not mistaken, you were just with Julia Haydon, weren't you?"
"Are you spying on me?" Derrick's eyes narrowed, his tone hostile. The Light Travelers were becoming increasingly bold, daring to spy on him?
"Of course not, we would never spy on a respected Chancellor," Zachary said calmly, a hint of amusement in his voice. "You carry the scent of Julia Haydon. We spent a pleasant evening together last night, so I'm quite familiar with it."
Derrick: "..."
For some reason, he felt a wave of disgust.
Thankfully, the butler had interrupted him. Otherwise, ...
He didn't want to continue this conversation and waved his hand dismissively. "Let's get to the point, Zachary. What brings you here in the middle of the night?"
"It's about a letter," Zachary's voice grew serious, though his face remained hidden in the black mist. "The letter is from the Emperor of the Rayne Empire—Sean Violet."
“Huh?!” Upon hearing that it was from this person, Derek immediately sat up straight. "A letter from Emperor Rayne?"
Zakari nodded slightly and gently tossed a pale purple letter onto the table.
Derek didn’t immediately touch the letter. Instead, he gave a subtle nod to the side of the meeting room.
A few seconds later, a spell drifted over from the side of the room and landed on the letter.
After a few more seconds, a muffled voice came from the side of the room: "Sir, this letter has no traps. I’ve removed the magical seal."
"Hmm." Derek nodded slightly and took out the letter, reading it carefully.
The letter’s content was as follows: The Rayne Empire and the Windchime Empire were preparing to wage war against the Goldenflower Empire. They were asking the Hills Federation to choose a side and promising "significant benefits" if they sided with the two empires.
Derek wasn’t surprised by the content of the letter; instead, he felt a sense of relief.
"Finally, it’s here!"
The Gesang family had long predicted that the Rayne Empire would try to recruit them, and they had already decided to betray their sovereign nation.
A personal letter from Emperor Rayne was more than enough to show his sincerity!
"Please wait a moment." Derek kept Zakari calm and then instructed a servant to bring him paper and a pen. He wrote a lengthy reply.
In his response, he stated: If the Rayne Empire was willing to offer them a satisfactory share of the benefits and expand their economic and trade relations, the Hills Federation would be willing to join the Rayne Empire in their campaign against the evil Goldenflower Empire, transforming the eastern empire into a fertile ground for free trade.
After finishing the letter, he sealed it in an elegant envelope, placed a magical seal on it, and handed it to Zakari: "Zakari, this is my reply to Emperor Rayne. Please make sure it reaches him."
Just as he said this, the letter suddenly floated upward, slipping from his grasp.
Derek hadn’t fully reacted when a flash of cold steel appeared. The mysterious Zakari, shrouded in black mist, was sliced in half in the blink of an eye.
At the same time, a fifth-level mage hidden on the side of the room was silently cut down.
Then, a half-elf female assassin appeared in front of him.
This half-elf assassin was none other than Cecilia Nightblade, a subordinate of Su Yu.
She had been sent out by Su Yu last night to gather intelligence and had been tailing Zakari all the way to Sea Serpent Castle. She hadn’t expected to catch such a big fish!
Cecilia wiped the blood from her dagger and waved the letter in her hand: "Not bad, Derek. You’re thinking of betraying your sovereign nation and siding with the enemy, huh?"
"Y-You’re Lady Cecilia Nightblade?!"
Derek’s face turned pale, and his eyes filled with extreme despair.
There were only about twenty seventh-level powerhouses in the human world, and since Cecilia hadn’t concealed her appearance, he immediately recognized her.
But recognizing her only made him more desperate.
Why would Cecilia be here? Did Princess Alysia send her?
"Lady Cecilia, please, let me explain—"
"There’s no need for explanations. You can explain it to Lord Kexing yourself!"
Without giving him a chance to argue, Cecilia grabbed him by the collar and dragged him out the window, up into the sky.
