Chapter 306
Chapter 306
On a tidal flat, as waves crashed against the shore, a figure emerged from the receding tide.
Luo Wei spat out a stream of seawater in a straight line, boring a deep hole through the sand. He shook his body, sending droplets scattering, and instantly felt clean and refreshed.
After detaching from the Warship, Luo Wei had dived into the sea, hunted a sea beast to replenish his strength, and recovered most of his combat power. Then, he swam directly back to Insect Country.
From his vantage point, he could see the silhouette of a town ahead, dominated by a towering ancient structure that loomed over the entire settlement.
He snorted coldly. His figure blurred into a wispy afterimage, speeding toward the town like an arrow.
……
“Mr. Kuro, that’s Insect Country.”
On the Grand Line, a Warship drifted on the waves.
Inside the cabin, Klah pointed out the window at the narrow outline of an island.
Kuro sat in a chair, chewing on a cigar, following Klah’s gesture with his gaze.
The island was long and narrow, its head connected to a massive landmass—the Flower Country.
“Insect Country forms a land corridor linking it to Flower Country,” Klah explained. “Its shape resembles a long worm, hence the name.”
“It’s that flat?”
As the Warship approached, Kuro raised an eyebrow. The slender island seemed entirely exposed, its flat terrain offering no natural cover. For maritime warfare, flat land meant easy access for invasion.
Klah nodded.
“Exactly, Mr. Kuro. Thirty years ago, Insect Country was a pirate paradise in the West Blue. With landings possible anywhere, pirates ran rampant. The locals couldn’t control them.”
“Only after the Luo Family arrived did things change. With overwhelming force, they crushed the pirates, ensuring not a single one dared set foot on Insect Country again.”
“Insect Country has four major towns—Cocoon Town, Pupa Town, Tui Town, and the capital Butterfly Town. These divide the nation into four regions.”
“Tui Town is the Luo Family’s base. As a reward for their contributions, the king granted them the town—effectively a quarter of Insect Country’s territory. Within this jurisdiction, the Luo Family reigns supreme.”
Klah watched the island sharpening in the distance. “Our destination is Tui Town. We’ll land there, find the Luo Family, and resolve Lidamiss’s trouble.”
He glanced at Lida, lounging on the sofa, cheerfully licking a lollipop.
Carefree as ever.
Well, it made sense.
For Lidamiss, any problem could be solved by Mr. Kuro.
No wonder she had nothing to worry about.
Favored daughter treatment!
Klah sighed inwardly. Compared to himself, even Kas’s injuries held less weight than Lidamiss’s trivial woes.
Wait—he was the one injured first. Back then, Kuro didn’t intervene until Kas fell.
So…
He ranked lower than Kas?
No! Klah, don’t think like that.
You’re Kuro’s trusted strategist. At least lately, he hasn’t made you take the blame for anything.
You’re still useful!
“Is Luo Wei heading toward Tui Town too?” Kuro asked.
Klah nodded. “Yes. At this distance, I can already smell his blood.”
During their previous battle, Klah had tasted Luo Wei’s blood. Werewolves could track targets through blood, and his range was considerable. Earlier, he sensed nothing—but now, nearing Insect Country, the familiar metallic tang returned.
Kuro mused, “Contacted the local Navy yet?”
“Still in progress,” Klah replied.
For someone aiming to lie low in the West Blue—avoiding the New World, two-year gaps, major events, and confrontations with the Four Emperors—staying inactive was safest.
He planned to stay under the radar, preferably forgotten by the world.
After all, even the Summit War’s battle against one Four Emperor nearly ended in disaster. The New World promised even graver dangers, especially with Kuro’s combat power now on the Navy’s radar.
New World!
The Navy’s reforms were ongoing. Unless an accident occurred, Akainu would become Fleet Admiral. That radical’s policies would inevitably shift focus to the New World, facing the Four Emperors head-on. With Kuro’s foresight, turbulence and hidden dangers awaited.
Whitebeard’s death removed little fear—Kuro never feared an old, sick pirate.
But Kaido and Big Mom? Entirely different beasts.
And Shanks bore a deep wound from him, not to mention the betrayal against Blackbeard. That meant three Four Emperors already targeted him, plus a fourth—Shanks—who might snap at any time.
The New World meant endless conflict. One misstep, and Kuro’s corpse might litter the sea.
He knew his limits. Even handling Kaido alone was impossible, let alone other Four Emperors and the countless strong pirates surviving under their shadows.
Anyone thinking otherwise was a fool.
Kuro’s mind was clear. He was merely a Commander. Gramps’s laid-back nature would respect his wishes, sparing him forced transfers.
With Gramps covering for him and his firm refusal to return to the Grand Line, even a Fleet Admiral couldn’t reassign him without his explicit request.
Moreover, no major events like the Summit War loomed. The World Government wouldn’t waste resources dragging him back for no reason.
He’d practically been exiled here.
After stirring trouble in the Grand Line, the Government would gladly pin him to some corner for regional peace.
As long as he avoided promotions, occasional duty reports to Headquarters would let him live comfortably.
What did he care about the Grand Line or Four Emperors?
The World Government’s fate wouldn’t starve a Navy officer.
Besides, he planned to develop Pegasus Town. With proper management, that alone would sustain him.
Time to focus on retirement plans—or rather, Pegasus Town’s peaceful revitalization.
If Akainu became Fleet Admiral and pressed him, he had excuses ready.
“West Blue pirates remain unchecked. I’d disgrace Headquarters if I retreated.”
Die before retreating!
So for Insect Country, diplomacy first. As an allied nation, the Navy wouldn’t refuse them face.
After all, he—Lucius Kro—was a world-famous figure from the Summit War.
His record was impeccable: a decade-long Navy veteran, subordinate to an Admiral, combat prowess proven, indirectly causing Ace’s death and gravely injuring Shanks. Outwardly, a staunch World Government loyalist.
Otherwise, the Government wouldn’t forgive his past exploits in the Grand Line so easily.
Though reluctant to leverage his reputation, he’d use it when convenient. Sometimes, it eased burdens without merit.
“Hmph.”
Kuro exhaled a smoke ring, leaning back comfortably. “What a face-saver I am.”
