Chapter 306: The Shadow Lord Who Loves Drama
Chapter 306: The Shadow Lord Who Loves Drama
(Wishing everyone a happy Lunar New Year! (▽`)
Sherry Barnett appeared alongside Shadow because she had been researching the incantation to seal the mana barrier of the Desireful Eye.
However, she never expected that the perpetrator behind this attack on the academy would be her usually kind and amiable godfather.
"Why! Even if he did something wrong, there are laws to punish him. Why did you have to kill him?"
Sherry, though aware of the unforgivable nature of Ruslan's actions, couldn't help but feel resentment towards Night City for taking her godfather's life. After all, he had raised her for many years.
"I've already said it before. Death is the best outcome for him, and from his sword, I could sense that this was what he desired.
Moreover, Sherry, you might have misunderstood something. While he was a deeply caring godfather to you, what about the other people in this academy? Those two deceased Royal Knight Order members over there, and the academy students who died in this incident—they were all precious to their families.
Just because he's your godfather, Ruslan, does that mean he can't be punished for his crimes?"
Hearing Night City's words, Sherry, who had been glaring at him, now showed a look of panic.
Killing to repay killing, and paying back debts—these are principles of nature. She understood the logic, but...
"Young lady, if you want the power of vengeance, I can lend it to you if you need it."
As Sherry Barnett struggled with her thoughts, Shadow suddenly appeared before her and extended his hand.
Seeing Shadow's attempt to add drama to the situation, Night City immediately showed a look of displeasure.
Damn, can't you see that the girl is already on the verge of blackening? Why are you trying to pour oil on the fire?
Moreover, it's not like he wanted to steal the boss and show off. Is he holding a grudge?
Besides, it's not like he intended to steal the boss; the boss came straight at him.
As Shadow reached out to Sherry, who was staring at Ruslan lying in a pool of blood, her eyes slightly vacant, just as she was about to reach out to Shadow, Roz and Alice suddenly rushed into the cathedral.
"Sherry, don't believe in your so-called godfather. He is the murderer who killed your parents. The vice-president of the Academic Academy, Ruslan, only adopted you to exploit your talents and have you continue researching ancient artifacts for him.
I witnessed this myself when he was fighting Night City earlier, and I was one of them."
Hearing Roz's words, Sherry, who had been staring blankly, now showed disbelief. She then turned her gaze towards Night City, seeking a definitive answer.
In response to Sherry's gaze, Night City turned his head away and said, "I've said it before. Death is the best outcome for him. In the end, he couldn't face the current you after his sudden realization."
Although Night City didn't directly answer her question, his attitude was proof enough.
Sherry also realized that Night City had remained silent earlier to let her keep the best impression of her godfather and to bear the brunt of the criticism himself. She hadn't expected Roz to suddenly reveal everything.
"Shadow, you're not getting away this time! Although the Diabros Cult attacked the academy, your 'Shadow Courtyard' is also one of the culprits disrupting the kingdom!"
As Alice finished speaking, several Royal Knight Order members and numerous ordinary knights emerged behind her, surrounding Shadow with their drawn longswords.
"The path we walk is not one of justice, nor is it purely evil.
We simply follow our own path, and even if we bear the world's evils upon ourselves, what of it?
We need not be understood, nor do we need to explain ourselves, for there is none who can stop us from doing what we desire!"
The cringe-worthy dialogue, spoken by Shadow, was accompanied by a similar display from a member of the Shadow Courtyard who had also broken through the window. The female members of the Shadow Courtyard, hearing Shadow's words, all wore expressions of adoration.
As for Yecheng, he could only cover his face in embarrassment. There was no denying that Shadow was incredibly dramatic, and his words and actions were so cringe-worthy that Yecheng couldn't bear to look.
What made Yecheng even more speechless was that the others, including Alice and the rest of the Royal Knight Order, were all shocked and impressed by Shadow's words.
Yecheng was at a loss for words... Could it be that in this world, being cringe-worthy was actually a sign of strength?
"Our objective here is complete. Until we meet again, my friends."
As Shadow finished speaking, Alice and the others wanted to step forward to stop them from leaving, but Shadow merely turned and flicked his cloak, releasing a powerful Mana Fluctuation that swept through the area.
The black Mana Ripples rippled outwards like ripples in a pond, and the knights surrounding Shadow were immediately knocked off balance by the Mana shockwave.
Alice and a few others managed to remain standing amidst the Mana shockwave.
However, the powerful Mana formed strong winds, creating a formidable resistance that made it incredibly difficult for them to take even a single step forward.
When everything calmed down, and Alice and the others opened their eyes again, the cathedral was empty, with no trace of Shadow or the other members of the Shadow Courtyard.
"Damn it! Shadow, one day I will definitely capture you!"
Alice could only shout in frustration as she looked at the now-vanished Shadow. This was already the umpteenth time they had watched helplessly as members of the Shadow Courtyard slipped away right before their eyes!
The Diabros Cultists who had invaded the academy were cleaned up by the Shadow Courtyard before Alice and the Royal Knight Order could arrive.
This was another source of frustration for Alice. They were the ones supposed to be protecting the Midgar Kingdom, yet every time the Diabros Cultists appeared, they were eliminated first by the Shadow Courtyard.
While the Shadow Courtyard's actions in eliminating the Diabros Cultists did not make them enemies of the kingdom, their unrestrained and lawless behavior was certainly not something any kingdom would condone.
Moreover, the fact that they always took care of the problem first made Alice feel like they were losing face, even feeling that the Shadow Courtyard was trampling on the dignity of the Royal Knight Order!
The Midgar Kingdom had its own Royal Knight Order to protect it and did not need the unbound, lawless, and unrestrained Shadow Courtyard.
