Chapter 304: The Professional Duelist
Chapter 304: The Professional Duelist
A minute later, fulfilling everyone's wishes, You Xuan, the village's hope, donned his Duel Disk and stepped up to the dueling arena. He stood across from Sommelier Baka, the professional duelist, as the chosen representative of the academy.
If it were solely a matter of saving the academy's reputation, You Xuan might not have been the only option in the students' minds. After all, Marufuji Ryo, known as the "Academy Caesar," also had a sizable fan base.
While You Xuan was already acknowledged as the academy's rookie of the year, some fans remained adamant that Caesar was the undisputed number one, representing the pinnacle of the Duel Academy.
Although You Xuan was strong, he was still just a first-year freshman, and not everyone believed he could surpass Caesar without direct confrontation.
However, if strength wasn't the only consideration, then there was little room for hesitation. More than eighty percent of the students felt that You Xuan was the popular choice.
And the reason was simple: he made dueling fun.
As the tenth-generation students often said, dueling should bring joy. You Xuan's duels were renowned for their entertainment value, and it would be a shame not to share that joy with a professional duelist.
If You Xuan performed as expected and allowed the pro to experience the same delight as the students, everyone would be thrilled. And if, by some chance, the so-called eighth-ranked pro displayed his prowess and suppressed You Xuan, it would still be a cause for celebration—a successful resistance against overwhelming odds.
From any angle, You Xuan's duel promised to be the most captivating.
And so, the stage was set. You Xuan stood across from the professional duelist.
"Since everyone unanimously chose you, you must have something extraordinary to offer," Sommelier said, having already drawn his five-card hand. He smiled and continued, "Of course, you're still young. No matter how excellent the raw material, it cannot increase in value without the passage of time. So, there's no need to be nervous or burdened. Just duel at your usual level."
"I'll give you a demonstration, and the outcome isn't important."
"A fine senior," You Xuan said as he activated his Duel Disk and drew his hand. "Then, I look forward to this duel."
"Duel!" they exclaimed in unison.
[You Xuan: Life Points 4000]
[Sommelier: Life Points 4000]
"I'll start," Sommelier said, drawing a card.
He elegantly pinched a card from his hand with two fingers.
"I summon 'Bacchus, the Wine God' in attack mode!" (Original Card)
A Greek-style elder with a bushy beard that resembled a fluffy flame appeared. He held an antique, elegant golden wine cup in one hand and a bunch of grapes in the other.
[Bacchus, the Wine God: Attack Points 1600]
"I'll set one card in the backrow and end my turn." Sommelier smiled. "Now, let's see what you've got, student. Show me your dueling style."
He casually brandished a glass of red wine that seemed to have appeared out of thin air, his posture calm and collected.
Every movement exuded elegance.
"A fine senior, indeed," You Xuan said. "My turn, draw."
You Xuan drew a card, added it to his hand, and then selected one card from his hand.
"I'll set one card face-down on the field."
An image of a face-down card appeared in the backrow, accompanied by a golden glow.
He then revealed a magic card from his hand.
"I activate the Magic Card 'Hand Destruction.' Both players discard their entire hands and then draw the same number of cards."
"Whoa, a bold move to start with a hand swap," Sommelier chuckled, offering his insight. "Did you not draw the cards you needed? In that case, it's a deck construction issue. You shouldn't rely on hand replacement to solve problems."
"You make a good point, Senior," You Xuan acknowledged.
He scanned the newly drawn cards, feigning contemplation, and after a moment, selected one.
'I'll Set a monster in face-down Defense Position.'
A face-down monster appeared on the field. He then drew three more cards from his hand.
'And I'll Set three more cards face-down. End Turn.'
One face-down monster in the front row, and four in the back. Many students who were familiar with this scene couldn't help but anticipate what was to come.
Here it is! You Xuan's signature T-formation!
It's coming! It's coming!
'Hmm, so you're just going to play defensively?'
Sommelier swirled the wine in his glass, maintaining his nonchalant demeanor. 'Well, there are duelists like that. Those who prioritize defense over offense are usually young and inexperienced. The professional world can be cruel; if you can't take the initiative and seize control of the duel, Lady Luck will not smile upon you.'
Sommelier set down his glass—the wine seemed more like a prop for showmanship than an actual drink.
'Then, as a professional, let me demonstrate. My turn, draw!' Sommelier declared. 'At this moment, the effect of 'Bacchus, the Wine God' activates.
This card gains 300 Attack Points during each of my Standby Phases.'
[Bacchus, the Wine God: ATK 1600 → ATK 1900]
'Next, I activate the Magic Card 'Angel's Charity' from my hand.' Sommelier continued, 'I draw three cards from my Deck, then discard two cards from my hand.'
'At this moment, I activate my face-down card.' You Xuan snapped his fingers. 'Continuous Trap: Allure of Darkness.'
An image of a demon appeared on his field, a ghostly silhouette like a specter of death, shrouded in an eerie aura.
'Allure of Darkness inflicts 300 points of damage to each player for every card sent to the Graveyard.'
'Hmm?' Sommelier furrowed his brows.
This was a card once used by the legendary duelist of Duel City, Malik.
Mr. Malik was indeed the pioneer of graveyard strategies. Many graveyard-based cards and tactics were first introduced by him, later explored and refined by real-card players, leading to the development of various mature deck-building strategies.
When it came to graveyard tactics, calling Malik the 'Master of the Graveyard' was no exaggeration.
'Pfft, so I take damage every time a card is sent to the Graveyard? But it's only 300 points.'
Sommelier didn't seem too concerned at this point and drew three more cards from his Deck.
'According to the effect of 'Angel's Charity,' I discard two cards from my hand.'
'Then, the effect of 'Allure of Darkness' activates. With two cards sent to the Graveyard, plus 'Angel's Charity' itself, that's a total of three cards, dealing 900 points of damage.'
[Sommelier: LP 4000 → LP 3100]
'Hmph, only 900 points of damage.'
Sommelier's brows furrowed slightly.
Although he said this, a sense of unease began to creep into his heart.
Especially when he saw the holographic projection of the death-like demon on his opponent's field, surrounded by black mist, along with the remaining face-down cards that seemed like bottomless pits, each aspect adding to the discomfort he felt.
