Chapter 304: Do I Look Like Someone Who Goes Around Causing Trouble?
Chapter 304: Do I Look Like Someone Who Goes Around Causing Trouble?
Although Lida refused to admit it, there was a strong possibility this really was her older brother.
Hair color and facial features could be coincidences, but an identical combat innate talent? That wasn’t something that appeared randomly.
Especially in this world, which placed immense importance on bloodline inheritance.
Strong men’s bloodline would ultimately produce strong men.
As for the lack of memories—Grand Line was full of strange phenomena. This was perfectly normal.
“Lida, when you were in the Grand Line before, did you encounter any seahorses or similar creatures?” Kuro asked.
“Huh? Seahorses?”
Lida thought for a moment, then shook her head. “Don’t remember. Are seahorses tasty?”
Whether they were tasty or not was unknown, but Kuro recalled one particular seahorse in Grand Line that could devour people’s memories.
Kuro glanced at Luo Wei being fed by the Navy. “Hey, Luo Wei, are you sure that members of your Luo Family who pass the Trials always regain their memories?”
“Of course.”
Luo Wei swallowed the last bite of food the Navy handed him. “The Hunger instinct drives us to return to the Insect Country. No one can resist. Even if we lose our memories, we won’t forget this innate drive.”
He looked at Lida, puzzled. “I thought you were dead. After all, every Luo Family member who survives eventually returns home. Before coming of age, we must return—we’ll die otherwise. I remember you coming of age years ago.”
The age of adulthood here was sixteen, similar to a country from his previous life.
Lida had been an adult for two years now.
“I think I understand why now.”
Kuro glanced at Lida, piecing things together in his mind.
Memories were unreliable—Grand Line was full of oddities. Besides the memory-eating seahorse he knew of, there were likely other causes.
As for the Hunger—
Devil Fruit abilities were miracles of the Grand Line.
No matter what bloodline issues existed, eating a Devil Fruit made anything possible.
Still, Kuro needed to check this himself.
Better to resolve potential problems now than deal with them later.
“Forget it. The past is the past. Knowing too much isn’t good for your health sometimes.”
Kuro gently ruffled Lida’s hair as she ate. “Just focus on being happy.”
“I said stop messing up my hairstyle, Kuro!” Lida snapped.
Clank! Clank!
The chains suddenly rattled.
Deep in Luo Wei’s eyes, a flicker of envy passed. He curled his lips into a cruel smile. “Lolita, you traitor who abandoned our family’s honor. Even if you return, the Old Ancestor might not release you from that torment. You’ve contributed nothing to the family.”
“Only those who contribute to the Luo Family have any hope of overcoming the Hunger. The Old Ancestor is a Devil Fruit user. If he refuses, no one can undo it.”
“Ah, a Devil Fruit user.”
Kuro suddenly understood. “That makes things easier.”
Lida was also a Devil Fruit user. While her ability might have been affected, the collision between two Devil Fruit abilities likely allowed Lida to control her own Hunger.
He rubbed his chin. “Come to think of it, Donquixote Doflamingo called you the ‘Gluttonous Demon.’ You must’ve devoured many things back then. But lately, you’ve been better. Probably because your ability developed enough to counteract the Old Ancestor’s power?”
“Something like that. I don’t really care, as long as I can eat enough.”
Lida raised her tiny fist, scowling. “When I return, I’ll make that Old Ancestor release me. If he won’t, I’ll just beat him to death.”
“You’ve got my style.” Kuro gave a thumbs-up, flashing his white teeth.
What was the simplest way to deal with a Devil Fruit user?
Obviously—kill them.
Once dead, their power vanished.
“The Old Ancestor isn’t that easy to handle.”
Luo Wei continued, “He’s the strongest in the Luo Family. No one’s defeated him in thirty years. His abilities and unarmed combat techniques are top-tier. Unless you’re an Admiral-level monster, no one can stand against the Old Ancestor.”
“Is that so? Truly terrifying.”
Kuro feigned surprise, glancing at Luo Wei. “Leave him here. Everyone else, go about your business.”
With that, he turned toward the office compartment on the warship.
“Hey, Kuro, wait for me!”
Lida followed behind, entering the tall fortress atop the warship.
Luo Wei watched Lida’s retreating figure. Lowering his head, he murmured bitterly, “Maybe forgetting isn’t so bad.”
His whisper reached Kuro’s ears, making him pause briefly before continuing forward.
Night fell quickly.
They’d set sail at noon, drifted across the sea for a while—natural progression toward nightfall.
The Navy measured their position, confirming no storms would strike this area tonight. They dropped anchor. Except for a few left-behind sailors, everyone else retired to rest.
Luo Wei remained like a forgotten object, chained in place on the deck.
Clack! Clack!
In the dead of night, the chains began to rattle.
“Unforgivable!”
Luo Wei struggled briefly, realizing he couldn’t break free. He twisted his body a few times, finally giving up.
“Lita’s grip was too harsh. Did she obtain an ability that drains physical strength? If so, I might not return in time. Problems will arise.”
“What kind of problems?”
A voice echoed.
Without hesitation, Luo Wei replied, “Obviously, completing the long-awaited—”
He suddenly froze, turning sharply. Kuro sat casually by the ship’s railing beside him, watching.
“You came at night. What do you want? If you’re here to kill me, I’ll warn you—don’t. I’m Lita’s, no, Lida’s older brother. Even if she can’t remember now, what will you do when she eventually recalls?”
Luo Wei glared at Kuro, laughing coldly.
“I’m not that bored. I could’ve killed you earlier.”
Kuro snapped his fingers. The chains binding Luo Wei loosened and fell away.
“What—?”
Luo Wei immediately leapt up, stretching his limbs, staring at Kuro in confusion. “What are you planning?”
“Isn’t it obvious?”
Kuro gazed at the Grand Line. “Journeying through the Grand Line is full of uncertainties. I can’t sleep soundly with you as a ticking time bomb aboard. But I can’t kill you either. After considering everything, releasing you seemed the best option.”
“Is that so? How kind of you to let me go!”
Luo Wei sneered, hopping to the other side of the ship’s railing, preparing to leap into the sea.
“Wait.”
Kuro’s voice came from behind. “You really miss your sister, don’t you?”
Luo Wei’s body stiffened, but he instinctively scoffed, “Don’t joke around. What’s there to miss about a bloodline traitor who abandoned family honor? All I care about is this bloodline.”
“Is that right? Forget it.”
Kuro shrugged. “Considering you’re Lida’s brother and not a pirate, watch your step. Don’t let some sea beast eat you.”
“None of your business!”
Luo Wei turned, glaring venomously at Kuro. He pressed his lips together, silent for a moment. Finally, he spoke, “Leave after your ability is undone. Don’t interfere with Insect Country or Flower Country’s affairs.”
With that, he leapt into the sea. “Splash!” The seawater swallowed him whole.
Kuro scratched his face, expression odd. “Do I really look like someone who goes around causing trouble? I wouldn’t even bother if you asked me to. Dealing with effort-intensive, unflattering matters? The most damn annoying thing in the world.”
