Chapter 304: Ascending Tower Chronicles (4)
Chapter 304: Ascending Tower Chronicles (4)
The four exchanged glances before Qiu Fengse finally stepped forward. "I'll open it", he said, reaching for the doorknob.
"Hold on", Feng Bu Jue interjected. "You're just going to charge in fearless-like? What if it's a 'door trap' scenario?"
"But someone has to open it", Qiu Fengse countered. "Under these ambiguous conditions, if the system placed a deadly trap behind the only viable exit, that'd be tantamount to forcing player attrition. It's unreasonable."
"Ah, right", Feng Bu Jue nodded, unapologetically retreating backward. "Then I'll just keep a safe distance. You don't mind, do you?"
"Sure, whatever", Qiu Fengse muttered. He exchanged meaningful looks with Hong Hu and Ji Chang, both shrugging with expressions of exasperated amusement.
This guy called [Mad Bu Jue] is absolutely paranoid, they all thought. First reckless, now overly cautious.
But they simply didn't understand Feng Bu Jue...
Who was he? In solo scenarios, he'd treat opening a door like disarming a bomb. Before entering a room, he'd toss in an iron bar to probe for traps. In situations like this, asking him to stand nearby while someone else opened the door? If he spoke bluntly, he'd say: "Your death's fine, just don't get my clothes stained."
To him, every door concealed a primed grenade, every bush hid a Garen. So unless absolutely necessary, he'd never risk capsizing in shallow waters.
Without further hesitation, Qiu Fengse ignored Feng Bu Jue—who'd already retreated twenty meters—and pushed the door open after steadying his breath.
Beyond the threshold lay a spacious square room, roughly twenty meters per side. The only exit was the white door they'd just entered.
Though smaller than the lobby outside, the ceiling here towered significantly higher—easily exceeding the five-meter height of the previous chamber.
The room was empty save for a peculiar object at its center. It resembled a polyhedral sphere, slightly larger than a basketball.
None of the four stepped inside immediately. These were no ordinary adventurers—they'd seen enough to know better than to rush into strange setups.
"I expected stairs or an elevator room", Ji Chang remarked.
"Hong Hu frowned. "We've confirmed—the only path on this floor was that door. Now it leads to another enclosed space instead."
Qiu Fengse folded his arms. "Two possibilities. Either this room is the 'Reasoning Club,' and entering completes our task—" He pointed at the object. "—or that thing enables our escape."
"A mechanism? Or a teleportation device?" Ji Chang speculated.
"You assume it's the latter?" Qiu Fengse raised an eyebrow.
Ji Chang hesitated. "This room hardly screams 'club.' No windows, potential air circulation issues. When sealed, it'd be pitch black inside."
"Hard to say", Qiu Fengse countered. "The 'Reasoning Club' might not be conventional. The system could name a public restroom that. Besides, this 'enter the club' task is likely just the first phase. Completing it probably doesn't mean game clearance. Maybe the requirement is simply getting all surviving players inside this room."
"Possible", Ji Chang nodded, glancing back at the energy wall sealing the entrance. "Maybe the space transforms once we enter."
"Better to send someone in first", Hong Hu suggested. "But since I proposed it—"
"Ahhhh!" Feng Bu Jue's scream cut him off.
The sudden shriek startled all three, their terror levels spiking.
Since the door opened, Feng Bu Jue had stood silently, fixated on the central object with an unnerving gaze. Now, without warning, he bolted backward in panic.
"Don't go in! Stay away from that thing!" Feng Bu Jue barked. "Get over here!"
Without thinking, the trio retreated to his side. Moments later, all four stood over twenty meters from the door.
"What now?" Hong Hu demanded.
"I just saved your life", Feng Bu Jue declared.
"Huh?" Hong Hu's voice dripped with confusion and irritation.
"You should ask how", Feng Bu Jue pressed.
Hong Hu snorted. "Fine, how?"
"You're better off not knowing", Feng Bu Jue replied.
"Listen, Feng Bu Jue", Ji Chang interjected, "seriously, stop messing around."
"I'm serious", Feng Bu Jue insisted. "I recognize that object. If I share what I know, approaching it becomes extremely dangerous. We'll need its power to proceed, but that requires cooperation." His gaze swept across their skeptical faces. "The object's nature is this: ignorance ensures relative safety. But if anyone within its radius knows its true nature, all contradictory matter within range gets destroyed."
He paused, letting the information settle. "I'm the one who knows its nature. And Hong Hu..." His voice slowed. "...you violate its laws. Fortunately, when you opened the door, I stood far enough away. Otherwise, the moment I recognized it, you'd already be dead."
