Chapter 302: Cats and Dogs
Chapter 302: Cats and Dogs
"Miltank!"
Professor Fortree called out.
At the sound of his voice, the Miltank that had been floating above the mountain cliff turned its head abruptly, its gaze fixing on the direction of the voice from a distance.
Its expressionless face was as cold as ice, devoid of any emotion.
It just floated there, turning its head but taking no further action.
"It gives off a 'stay away' vibe!" Naoki remarked.
Professor Fortree smiled, "That's just Miltank's way. While it doesn't express its emotions like Golethon, its range of emotions is just as diverse, if not more so."
"A bit like a standoffish cat?" Naoki murmured.
The kind that is cold and distant at first but eventually warms up to you and occasionally comes by for a cuddle.
Whereas Golethon is like an enthusiastic golden retriever.
Professor Fortree thought he was referring to cat-like Pokemon such as Espurr or Meowstic.
He hadn't considered it before, but now, with Naoki's comment, he found the comparison rather apt.
"Indeed, although compared to cat Pokemon, Miltank is even more enigmatic, and its mood shifts are so subtle that I can't decipher them," he nodded.
This reminded Naoki of his own Glaceon.
However, after spending time with the lively Froslass and Sandshrew, even Glaceon's reserved nature had become more cheerful.
"Come, let me take you closer for a better look!" Professor Fortree said.
Hearing this, Naoki couldn't help but feel a bit worried.
This Miltank was clearly not the one from the game, and its temperament might not be as friendly.
But Professor Fortree had already walked ahead, so Naoki hurried to catch up.
The two made their way along the mountain path to the cliff where Miltank was floating. As they approached, Miltank turned to face them, its gaze now focused on the pair.
It seemed accustomed to human presence.
Its eyes first landed on Professor Fortree, then shifted without any warmth in its gaze to the stranger standing beside the professor.
In an instant, Miltank's demeanor became dangerous.
It sensed a distinct and equally dangerous aura emanating from the human!
Miltank narrowed its eyes slightly, its wariness evident, but it remained floating in place, calm and collected, as it fixed its stare on the unfamiliar human, observing his movements.
"It's looking at me..." Naoki noticed Miltank's gaze.
Professor Fortree: "No need to worry, it's just being cautious because it's seeing you for the first time."
Raising his voice, the professor greeted the Miltank, "Greetings, Miltank. Are you settling in well here? This is my friend, Naoki, a very talented Pokemon Trainer."
Miltank didn't respond.
Noticing this, Naoki joined the professor in greeting Miltank, "Hello, Miltank! Nice to meet you!"
Seemingly satisfied that the humans posed no threat, Miltank's cautious expression softened.
—Weak humans, no threat, and no competition for territory.
After a period of observation, Miltank concluded, barely opening its mouth:
"Meow..."
Hearing that soft, adorable sound, Naoki's eyes widened in surprise.
Did he just hear that right?
Was that Miltank's voice?
So cute!
Noticing Naoki's reaction, Professor Fortree beamed with delight, "See? Compared to Golethon from the ancient times, this Miltank from the future has its own unique charm, don't you think?"
Naoki: "......"
He couldn't bring himself to answer that question!
Both Golethon and Miltank had their own endearing qualities.
"It's a shame," Professor Fortree sighed, "that Auryn and I often disagree on this topic. I find future Pokemon more captivating, but she prefers the wildness of ancient Pokemon. Sometimes, she even makes me sleep in the study because of this!"
Naoki was taken aback, wondering if it was appropriate for him to hear such personal details.
However, just as he was about to suggest that Miltank spend some more time with Naoki, a loud roar suddenly rang out from the entrance of the ecological garden.
"Agroooh!"
Naoki and Professor Fortree turned to see Professor Auryn arrive with Golethon and Cyclizar in tow.
Professor Auryn looked exasperated. "This child insisted on coming to look for Naoki after hearing he was missing. I couldn't stop it."
Golethon fixed his gaze on the Miltank, his wings flaring open as he stomped the ground and launched himself towards Naoki's position.
Miltank, too, was drawn to this unfamiliar Golethon.
It turned and stared intently at the newcomer, its expression still calm and collected, but a faint current of electricity crackled around its body, betraying the wariness it felt.
It sensed a formidable threat and was now poised for battle!
"Calm down, Miltank! It's not your enemy!" Professor Fortree quickly tried to soothe the Pokemon.
Golethon landed in front of Naoki, shielding him with its body, its golden eyes fixed on Miltank as it let out a warning roar. "Goolooh!"
It blamed Miltank for their accidental trip through the time machine and their forced separation from Naoki all those years ago!
Golethon had no love for this cunning and treacherous Pokemon.
"Golethon, no!" Naoki cried out, fearing that Golethon was about to pick a fight with Miltank.
But before he could do anything, Miltank had already floated to a higher position.
It was choosing a strategic spot to gain the upper hand in the impending battle!
Seeing this, Golethon didn't hesitate either. The violent instincts bred into it from ancient times surged forth, and it lunged at Miltank.
In an instant, Miltank's body erupted with a terrifying electrical current, engulfing the entire ecological garden in a dazzling display.
Currents of electricity surged towards Golethon, but the ancient Pokemon locked eyes with Miltank, seemingly ignoring the electricity as it rushed to its side and delivered a powerful punch.
The force of the blow caused Miltank's electricity to falter for a moment, and its body crashed into the valley below, creating a massive crater.
However, Miltank wasn't out of the fight yet.
It burst forth from the cloud of dust and smoke, its eyes now a fiery crimson, and a torrent of electricity surging from its body.
Miltank locked its gaze on Golethon, shifting forms as it enveloped itself in blinding electrical light, intending to pierce through its opponent.
Faced with this terrifying attack, Golethon showed no signs of backing down. Instead, it charged straight at Miltank.
As the distance closed between them, Golethon lashed out with its claws. To the shocked gazes of Professors Auryn and Fortree, it grabbed hold of Miltank, electricity and all, interrupting its attack!
Then, with a mighty swing of its fist, it sent Miltank flying.
In those few short seconds, so much had happened that neither Naoki nor Professor Fortree had been able to intervene.
Now, as they looked at Miltank lying on the ground, Professor Auryn's eyes widened in disbelief. "How is this possible?!"
Naoki, too, was stunned by what he had just witnessed.
Was his Golethon... that strong?
Below, Miltank seemed to sense that it couldn't defeat this Golethon.
It cowered, its body shrinking back as Golethon advanced step by step, its instinct for self-preservation kicking in.
"Golethon, stop!" Naoki shouted as he ran towards his Pokemon.
Professor Fortree also rushed towards Miltank, a Poke Ball in hand, and recalled the Pokemon.
