Chapter 300: Lanchi's Fanatic Behavior
Chapter 300: Lanchi's Fanatic Behavior
As Cardinal Lanchi adjusted the retrieval catalog on the reception desk, the pitch-black crystal screen lit up, displaying a detailed list.
The screen scrolled through an extensive list of precious items.
Each entry represented a treasure or magical artifact, described in pink font and accompanied by small icons indicating their characteristics.
Lanchi adjusted the sorting order to display the items from the highest to the lowest rank.
Finally, at the very top, appeared a card of sufficiently high rank.
With a gentle touch on the entry, Lanchi brought up a more detailed description and a three-dimensional image in the center of the crystal screen—
【Hurricane Dragon's Roar】
【Category: Spell Card】
【Grade: Pink Sacred】
【Attribute: Wind/Barrier】
【Rank: 7】
【Effect: Knock back and blow away all enemies within range centered on yourself, and for 1 second, clear and withstand attacks up to Rank 8 within the area. Cooldown time: 135 seconds.】
【Note: Emphasize virtue and honor in battle, and refrain from underhanded tactics.】
"This is a pretty good spell," Zestira commented, leaning in closer to get a better view of the card's detailed appraisal.
Its spell radius was between 20 and 30 meters, and while it didn't deal magic damage, it could cause indirect physical damage. Most of the time, it would be a defensive skill used to clear poisons, traps, and projectiles.
But she soon regretted saying that. Most pink sacred grade magic cards that were even slightly decent caught her interest.
Perhaps this card was far stronger than the four and five-ranked cards they had seen earlier in terms of mechanics and stats.
However, precisely because it was ranked seven, when compared horizontally with other seven-ranked spell cards, it might not seem as impressive.
More importantly, regardless of whether it was suitable or not, if her teacher wanted to use this card, it would take several years of continuously challenging the Shadow World to obtain it.
For a brief moment, the conference room fell silent. They carefully browsed through the catalog while the reception area's magical puppet waited quietly.
"This is the one," Lanchi said, barely hesitating after reading through the card's effects. He confirmed his choice on the touchscreen and addressed the puppet, "Please proceed with the final procedures."
"Eh?" Zestira was perplexed by his abrupt decision.
He didn't even glance at the subsequent six-ranked wind-attribute magic cards.
"No problem, please wait a moment while I process your request," the magical puppet replied, its blue eyes glimmering as it mechanically offered a slight smile. It began preparing for the exchange.
Her fingers glided lightly over the magic array on the reception desk, and soon, a small, round platform started to emerge from the center of the desk as it sank downward.
The platform came to life with swirling, translucent magic lights that twisted the air like a vortex, gradually forming a shape as if it were being unsealed and transported from the repository through a barrier.
Before long, a magic card the size of half a palm floated up from the platform.
A pink halo radiated from the card, and on its face was an ancient hurricane dragon totem set against the sky. Magical runes, like stars, connected to form a dazzling image, and the intricate magic patterns along the card's edges made it even more dazzling under the dim light.
The puppet reached out and gently lifted the magic card from the platform, and suddenly, it felt like a hurricane swept through the conference room, as if they were enveloped by the power of dragon language magic.
The puppet extended its hand, offering the card to Lanchi, its voice filled with mystique, "Please take good care of it."
"Thank you," Lanchi replied, taking the card. The instant he touched the translucent card, he could sense the terrifying compressed magical energy within it.
He carefully kept the card, and with that, the visit came to an end.
"Goodbye, sir, miss."
With the magic puppet's farewell, the door to the conference room opened once more, and Lanchi and Zestira departed, stepping back into the expansive central pathway of the Endless Library.
"Teacher, why did you choose that card?"
Zestira asked, her confusion evident as she walked on the soft red carpet, the path seeming to stretch even further in the quiet library.
"Because it's Wind-attribute," Lanchi replied.
This explanation only served to confuse Zestira further.
It was challenging for Lanchi to explain the decisive reason behind his choice.
The truth was that there was a rather subjective factor involved—he had always wanted a high-level Wind magic spell that would be visually stunning.
As they walked, the magic lamps along the pathway lit up once more, illuminating their way and adding a touch of brightness to the deep recesses of the library.
After a moment of silence, Lanchi asked, "Zestira, what do you think are the advantages of this card?"
Most magic had its merits if used appropriately.
For example, the series of magic cards labeled [Erroneous Cure] might seem like useless cards at first glance, but with wisdom and ingenuity, they could prove to be quite useful.
Zestira pondered this seriously, her head bowed in thought. She felt that her teacher was testing her.
The pair continued walking quietly along the library's pathways. With each new area they traversed, they would randomly trigger magical phenomena. Occasionally, a corner of the library would reveal magical machinery that automatically projected historical events or Easter egg scenes. At times, they would pass by a piano that would begin playing a melodious tune on its own.
Suddenly, Zestira looked up as if she had realized something.
"This card also has the effect of safely dismantling buildings," she said, looking at Lanchi.
"..."
Seeing that her teacher remained silent, Zestira continued, "This card is essentially a defensive spell. Sometimes, it's not that you want to destroy a building, but that you are forced to do so to protect your life. In such cases, you wouldn't be held primarily responsible for the property damage."
However...
Given the current real estate prices in the imperial capital of Helrom, if someone were saddled with a mortgage for decades and two powerful beings were to fight and demolish that person's house...
Then, regardless of who won or lost, the next one to join the battle would likely be the hapless homeowner, without even needing to wait for a court decision.
The more Zestira thought about it, the more she felt that Keius, the High Priest who had been reported by her teacher, had it rough. He had lost his job and his house, and he still had to repay his loans. Apparently, Keius had attempted suicide by jumping off a building recently but had failed to die.
This was the first time Zestira had heard of a heretic being driven to attempt suicide.
"Have you been secretly reading legal books?" Lanchi asked, a hint of surprise in his voice. He knew that Zestira disliked studying, so he had never suggested it to her. His style of teaching leaned more towards a happy and enjoyable education, only becoming strict with students who frequently broke the rules.
"I've only started recently," Zestira nodded, her voice calm but filled with genuine respect. "I now feel that studying under you is much more realistic than chasing after the Talia of my imagination."
"How has Talia become a fantasy now?"
"If she were really as powerful as I imagined her to be, she probably would have succeeded in restoring her country by now. Upon closer inspection, everything was just my one-sided fantasy. Instead of hoping that Talia will restore her country, I might as well pin my hopes on her finding a good husband to help her do it."
"Heh."
Lanchi hadn't laughed at anything before, but this remark from Zestira caused him to chuckle.
If that old lady wanted to find a rich husband, she'd have to rely on her knife skills instead of her looks.
