Chapter 300: A Book
Chapter 300: A Book
"Eighteen Vulcans?" Rod exclaimed in surprise. "I thought we only needed to defeat three of them?"
"Well..." Makarov scratched the back of his head awkwardly, "Actually, including the two Natsu took down, we encountered twenty in total—I might have accidentally stumbled upon their gathering place."
"You really have a way with these things."
Natsu tilted his head, "But I clearly defeated three monsters."
Lucy exclaimed in frustration, "I told you, that was my Celestial Spirit! It's Taurus Taros! I need to apologize to him next time!"
"Anyway, thank you all for your help. I owe you one."
Makarov, having defeated eighteen Vulcans, was already at his limit, and he didn't feel confident about taking on the remaining two.
Although he could temporarily hide in a cave, he was cold and hungry, and his condition would only get worse. If Natsu and Lucy hadn't arrived, he was prepared to make one last stand.
Natsu grinned, "It's what companions do."
Romeo politely expressed his gratitude, "Thank you, Natsu, Happy, Lucy, and also Rod and Mira."
Mira spoke up, "Let's discuss the rest tomorrow. Makarov needs to rest now."
Rod handed the medicinal kit to Makarov, "Take this, I'll have the River Crab send you back."
As they watched Makarov and Romeo leave, Natsu immediately jumped onto another River Crab, "Rod, I'm borrowing this crab!"
"Go ahead, tomorrow..."
"Charge!" Natsu didn't hear the latter half of Rod's sentence and charged forward, with Happy holding onto Natsu's scarf and floating behind him.
Although Rod could have asked the River Crab to throw Natsu off, he felt the need to maintain a composed image in front of the newbie. He didn't want to be dragged down to Natsu's level.
Anyway, he could discuss that matter tomorrow as well.
"It feels like we've been through a lot today," Lucy sighed, then bid farewell, "Miss Mira, Mr. Rod, I'm heading back too."
Seeing her turn around without hesitation, Rod casually asked, "Where are you going?"
"Huh? Of course, it's..." Lucy covered her face with her hands, "Oh no! I haven't rented a place yet! What should I do?!"
This girl was truly absent-minded.
Rod increasingly felt that she would fit right in with Fairy Tail.
Mira spoke gently to her, "If you don't mind, why don't you stay at my place for the night, and we can look for a house tomorrow."
"Really?" Lucy's eyes sparkled with gratitude, "Thank you so much!"
Rod stared at Mira with puppy eyes, his unspoken words evident in his gaze.
Mira pushed his face away, indicating that those words weren't necessary.
Rod ended up sending the two of them to Mira's place and then returned home.
After their daily training, Rod lay in bed, calculating in his mind.
Combining Mira's savings with his own, they could already afford a house similar to the one he was currently renting.
However, for future considerations, it would be better to buy a larger one or plan to rebuild or add another floor after purchasing it.
Either way, they would need some extra funds.
But if they worked together, it would be much easier. With just a couple of high-paying quests per month, they could accumulate the required amount in a few months.
A million Jewel-level quest would be ideal, offering suitable rewards and sufficient safety.
"Once we save enough money..." Rod drifted into a blissful sleep.
...
The next morning, at Mira's house, four people sat around the dining table.
"Why is Mr. Rod here?"
"Huh? You're mooching off my girlfriend, and you're asking why I'm here?"
"Sorry, I forgot!" Lucy blushed, having slept so comfortably that she almost mistook it for her own home.
"But Mr. Rod and Miss Mira have a great relationship, huh?"
Lucy's address for Mira had changed slightly, indicating their growing closeness, and now she even attempted to tease her.
However, compared to Kana and the others, Lucy's level of experience was lacking. Mira leaned affectionately on Rod, and winked at her, "Of course, we're very close during this romantic period."
"Romantic... love..." Lucy blushed at the mention of this word, which was already quite stimulating for someone with no romantic experience.
Mira asked, "Lucy, have you ever been in love?"
"Of course! Three... three times!" Lucy lied in a flustered manner, similar to Kana's tendency to exaggerate in such situations.
Rod chimed in, "Lucy, you're such a flirt. Mira and I found true love at first sight."
Lucy quickly defended herself, "I'm not a flirt!"
The mischievous couple laughed, finding amusement in teasing the newcomer.
Elfman had grown accustomed to this and finished his breakfast calmly, "Sister, I'm heading to the guild first. I plan to take on a job today."
"Okay, let us know once you've decided."
After Elfman left, Lucy finally voiced what she had been holding in all night, "I didn't expect Mr. Elfman to be Miss Mira's brother."
"Is that hard to believe?"
"Well, apart from their hair color, they don't look alike at all."
Miss Mira was so gentle and beautiful, with fair skin, while Mr. Elfman was the complete opposite.
Rod made up an excuse, "It's because Mira is stronger, so she took all the good traits."
"That's a bit harsh," Mira pouted at Rod, "Elfman is already pitiful enough."
Lucy chimed in, "I think it's more pitiful to be described like that by Miss Mira."
Unlike Elfman, Lucy didn't have the same sharp eye, and after finishing her meal, she left with Mira and Rod.
Considering she was a newcomer, Rod didn't hold it against her. He also took the opportunity to ask, "Have you figured out your living arrangements?"
"Yes, Miss Mira mentioned there's a girls' dormitory at the guild, but the rent is 100,000 J per month..." Lucy frowned, her funds were limited, "I plan to look for cheaper options outside first, and if I can't find any, I'll stay in the dormitory."
Lucy was indeed lucky.
After searching for half a day, she found a place with rent as low as 70,000 J.
The location was right by the canal, very close to the shopping street.
In terms of convenience, it was even better than Rod's place.
After negotiating the price with the landlady and obtaining the keys, Lucy rushed back to the guild to pack her belongings.
She mentioned that she would organize and rest today, and officially start her work as a Mage tomorrow.
In the afternoon, Natsu and Happy carefully selected a quest and approached Rod.
"Retrieve a book from Duke Albear's residence in Helios..." Rod confirmed the quest details, puzzled,
"I was wondering about this when I saw the quest. Do we also take on stealing jobs?"
Mira explained, "Of course, we don't condone theft of others' property. But if it's the client's own possession and there's no legal way to retrieve it, we can assist. These situations do occur occasionally."
"Alright, when do we leave?" Rod asked Natsu, "If it's tomorrow, I'll show you something interesting tonight."
Ah, finally back safely. After climbing the Great Wall and taking 15,000 steps, I still have to write. So tiring.
