Chapter 30: The Sword Tomb
Chapter 30: The Sword Tomb
At Dragon-Tiger Mountain, in the evening, Lin Yuan wore a gray standard Daoist robe as he came to a stop before a massive boulder.
"It's been ten years," he murmured.
Seated atop the boulder, Lin Yuan sank into a brief reverie.
Over the past decade, Lin Yuan had gained a profound understanding of this world. The cultivation system here was divided into nine tiers, from the ninth to the first. The ninth tier was the lowest, and the first was the highest; beyond the first tier was the Celestial Phenomenon Realm.
Those who reached the Celestial Phenomenon Realm were hailed as beings who stood on par with the heavens and earth itself. They could sense the vital energy of all things, and with a mere gesture, they could cause mountains to crumble and stones to shatter. Even in the Interstellar Human Alliance, such individuals would be considered formidable second-stage combatants.
From this, Lin Yuan could confirm that the level of this world was higher than that of the martial arts world he had traversed the first time.
"Seventy more years of stay," Lin Yuan mused as he glanced at the illusory words floating in his line of sight.
Name: Zhang Shanfeng (Lin Yuan)
Identity: Master of the Myriad Worlds' Gate
Bound Talent: Heaven-Defying Comprehension
Current State: Consciousness Descent
Time Remaining: Eighty Years Perhaps due to his increased strength and the different tier of this world, Lin Yuan's allotted stay had increased from twenty years to eighty. He was quite satisfied with this development; the longer his consciousness could remain in this world, the better.
"Celestial Phenomenon Realm," Lin Yuan murmured, his eyes half-lidded as he sensed the slow circulation of true energy within his body.
Over the past ten years, Lin Yuan had not been idle. Utilizing his Heaven-Defying Comprehension talent, he had reached the first-tier cultivation level in just three years—the equivalent of the Carefree Realm in the martial arts world. Then, five years later, he seamlessly entered the Celestial Phenomenon Realm, joining the ranks of the most elite powerhouses of this era.
Of course, Lin Yuan had kept all of this a secret, so none of the other residents of Dragon-Tiger Mountain were aware of his achievements.
"I still need to keep a low profile," Lin Yuan exhaled softly, his thoughts lingering on the matter.
The Celestial Master's Mansion of Dragon-Tiger Mountain was the ancestral court of the Daoist sect, with a profound heritage that was difficult to fathom. At least, that was what Lin Yuan had come to realize after breaking through to the Celestial Phenomenon Realm; he had vaguely sensed that there were several locations on Dragon-Tiger Mountain that emanated auras surpassing that of the Celestial Phenomenon Realm.
"Slow and steady cultivation," he reminded himself. "I still have a long stay ahead of me, so there's no need to rush."
With that in mind, Lin Yuan departed from the boulder and soon arrived at a Daoist abbey located midway up the mountain. This particular abbey was where the Daoist disciples of Dragon-Tiger Mountain resided. There were eight such abbeys scattered across the mountain.
The Celestial Master's Mansion was generally lax in its governance of the disciples, allowing them to attend to their own affairs as long as they completed their daily tasks.
Lin Yuan had just returned when he noticed a group of young disciples gathered around someone.
"Master Pingyang?" Lin Yuan's eyebrows furrowed slightly in surprise.
The person at the center of the crowd was an elderly Daoist dressed in tattered robes. He was a familiar sight on Dragon-Tiger Mountain, often mingling with the younger disciples. The various Daoist masters of the Celestial Master's Mansion usually paid him no heed.
Over time, everyone had grown accustomed to his presence.
The reason Lin Yuan paid attention to Master Pingyang was because he was, surprisingly, a Celestial Phenomenon Realm expert.
The Celestial Master's Mansion publicly acknowledged only one Celestial Phenomenon Realm cultivator—the Mansion Master, Master Qingcang.
In reality, however, there were three Celestial Phenomenon Realm cultivators within the Mansion.
This seemingly unkempt Master Pingyang was one of them.
Lin Yuan speculated that Master Pingyang probably served as a guardian of the Daoist path. He would only reveal himself during times of crisis for the Celestial Master's Mansion.
"Old Daoist, who is the strongest person in the world?" asked one of the younger disciples standing beside Master Pingyang. His voice was soft and curious.
"The strongest person in the world?" Master Pingyang paused for a moment, a smile spreading across his face. "Why, it's naturally the Celestial Masters of our Celestial Master's Mansion throughout the ages."
"Our Mansion has a legacy of six thousand eight hundred years, and in that time, thirty-six Celestial Masters have walked this path. Each one of them was a genius unparalleled in their time, with no equals in the world."
"Even those in the Celestial Phenomenon Realm would have to bow their heads before a Celestial Master."
Master Pingyang's voice carried a hint of pride as he spoke.
The other young disciples listened with growing excitement. After all, they were all disciples of the Celestial Master's Mansion, and hearing about the unmatched might of their Celestial Masters filled them with joy.
"Who is the current Celestial Master of the Mansion?" asked another innocent young disciple.
As soon as these words left his mouth, all the young disciples turned their gazes toward Master Pingyang.
"The current Celestial Master..." Master Pingyang hesitated for a moment before answering, "Our generation has not yet produced a Celestial Master."
There was more that Master Pingyang left unsaid.
Not only had the current generation failed to produce a Celestial Master, but it had been five hundred years since the last one.
In the six thousand eight hundred years of the Celestial Master's Mansion's legacy, thirty-six Celestial Masters had been born.
In other words, not every era gave birth to a Celestial Master.
Even so, there would usually be one every two to three hundred years.
But now, five hundred years had passed since the last Celestial Master entered nirvana.
"Celestial Master," Lin Yuan murmured, his eyes calm as he stood at a distance.
Based on what he had learned over the past decade, Lin Yuan believed that the true cultivation level of the Celestial Masters of the Mansion surpassed the Celestial Phenomenon Realm.
As for how one became a Celestial Master, it seemed that some sort of trial was involved. Lin Yuan did not yet know the specifics of this trial, as it was one of the Mansion's most closely guarded secrets. He suspected that only those in the Celestial Phenomenon Realm would be privy to such information.
"How does one surpass the Celestial Phenomenon Realm?" Lin Yuan frowned slightly.
Ever since he had entered the Celestial Phenomenon Realm two years ago, Lin Yuan had noticed that his cultivation progress had slowed significantly.
At this rate, even with his Heaven-Defying Comprehension talent, he estimated that it would take him at least fifty years to break through the Celestial Phenomenon Realm.
This was very strange.
With his talent, if it would take him fifty years, how long would it take others, even the most exceptional geniuses? Surely, it would take them at least two to three hundred years, if not five hundred. Yet, according to Lin Yuan's understanding, none of the past Celestial Masters had lived past the age of one hundred.
"Could there be a shortcut?" Lin Yuan wondered silently, his gaze subtly drifting towards several directions.
Those directions were the same ones from which he had sensed auras surpassing the Celestial Phenomenon Realm.
"It's you, Zhang Shanfeng," Master Pingyang said as he looked up at Lin Yuan, a smile spreading across his face. "In half a month, it will be time for the Mansion's once-in-twenty-years trip to the Sword Tomb. You should perform well; it will be greatly beneficial for your future."
"The Sword Tomb trip?" Lin Yuan's heart stirred slightly.
If anyone else had mentioned this, he might not have paid it much mind. But Master Pingyang was one of the Mansion's guardians and one of the three Celestial Phenomenon Realm cultivators. His understanding of the Mansion far exceeded Lin Yuan's.
For someone like him to specifically emphasize the trip to the Sword Tomb and encourage Lin Yuan to perform well, there was undoubtedly a deeper meaning behind it.
"Thank you for the reminder, Master Pingyang," Lin Yuan said respectfully, even though he wasn't sure what the Sword Tomb trip entailed.
Over the past ten years, Master Pingyang had shown him great care, especially when he had first arrived at Dragon-Tiger Mountain.
While Master Qingcang had been his primary caretaker, Master Pingyang had secretly used his Celestial Phenomenon true energy to cleanse Lin Yuan's meridians on several occasions.
Master Pingyang believed that Lin Yuan, due to his young age, was unaware of this. But Lin Yuan, with his consciousness descended upon this world, was fully cognizant of everything that had transpired since his birth.
