Chapter 30: Potions Master and the Anti-Dark Arts Potion
Chapter 30: Potions Master and the Anti-Dark Arts Potion
Madame Pomfrey, the Hogwarts matron, was a tall witch with expertise in healing spells, potions, herbs, and other therapeutic remedies.
According to rumors, St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries had invited her to join their staff on three separate occasions, offering her the position of deputy director should she accept.
However, Madame Pomfrey steadfastly refused, expressing her desire to remain at Hogwarts.
Of course, these were merely rumors, and their veracity was questionable. Neither Madame Pomfrey nor St. Mungo's had commented on the matter, neither confirming nor denying the stories.
This remained a small, intriguing mystery within Hogwarts.
As Kyle entered the school hospital, Madame Pomfrey happened to be passing by. She handed a bottle of green potion to a young wizard lying in bed.
"This is the last bottle of potion for treating scabies," she said. "Remember to apply it topically; do not drink it."
With that, she turned and hurried off to another bed, muttering under her breath, "Why, every year at this time, are there so many young witches and wizards sent here! What are the professors at Hogwarts doing? They are so irresponsible!"
It was clear that she was in a foul mood.
Just as Kyle hesitated, unsure of how to begin, Madame Pomfrey happened to glance his way.
"Merlin's beard, what happened to this child!" she exclaimed, rushing over. She carefully placed Michael on an empty bed and asked without turning her head, "What happened this time? Potions? Or Defense Against the Dark Arts? How did the student end up unconscious!"
"Neither, Madame," Kyle replied softly. "It was during Charms class. Michael cast a Lumos spell, and then this happened... Professor Flitwick said he must have overexerted himself magically."
"That's right, it was magical overexertion... Wait, what did you say?" Madame Pomfrey spun around to face Kyle, her eyes wide with disbelief. "A Lumos spell?!?"
Her expression was as if she had just witnessed Albus Dumbledore performing a pole dance on the Astronomy Tower.
Her incredulity was laced with a hint of absurdity, clearly indicating that she did not believe a word Kyle had said.
The young witches and wizards these days were becoming increasingly unreliable. Even their lies were poorly concocted.
To claim that a Lumos spell had led to magical overexertion... It was preposterous! Why didn't he just say that Filius Flitwick had been knocked down by a Lumos spell?
"It's true," Kyle quickly explained. "The first years from Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw witnessed it, and Professor Flitwick can vouch for me."
He proceeded to recount what had transpired during Charms class.
After hearing Kyle's explanation, most of Madame Pomfrey's doubts vanished.
If students from two houses had seen it, the incident would likely spread throughout Hogwarts soon. It would be easy to expose a lie, especially since he had also involved Professor Flitwick.
Madame Pomfrey turned and looked at Michael as one would look at a rare magical creature. This was the first time she had encountered a young wizard with such poor control over their magic.
Based on the previous description, the intensity of the Lumos spell seemed to suggest a magical riot.
Powerful, but uncontrollable.
However, Madame Pomfrey was certain that when she examined the young wizard earlier, she had found no signs of a magical riot. It truly seemed to be just a case of overexertion.
"Well, I'll be...
If casting a spell was likened to driving, then Michael's action would be equivalent to flooring the accelerator and emptying the fuel tank, surging forward at 200 kilometers per second.
Don't assume that this is a good thing.
While the speed is impressive, the brakes are equally important.
Fortunately, it was just a Lumos spell; Kyle shuddered to think what would have happened if it had been a fire-casting charm... He vowed to keep his distance from Michael in class from now on.
As far away as possible!
He had thought that the "Explosive Prodigy," who was supposed to enroll next year, was already outrageous enough, but now he had encountered a "Dark Arts Wizard" in his first year.
Hogwarts certainly didn't lack for interesting characters.
A few minutes later, Dumbledore arrived, having received the news, and brought along Snape, who had been teaching a class.
Madame Pomfrey led them to Michael's bedside and whispered a few words before stepping aside.
Dumbledore bent down and carefully observed Michael's condition, occasionally tapping him with his wand.
After a while, he sheathed his wand without a word and turned to Kyle, "Good morning, Kyle. Were you the one who brought him here to Poppy?"
"Yes, Professor," Kyle nodded.
"You did well," Dumbledore smiled. "And I've heard the details of the incident from Sabrina. If it weren't for you helping the fallen students, there would be more than just Mr. Michael lying here."
Kyle waved his hands, "It was the least I could do, Professor, and I wasn't the only one who helped."
"But you were the first to step up," Dumbledore winked. "Many upperclassmen, even adult wizards, would struggle to remain calm in such a situation, but you did, and you did it exceptionally well.
Your bravery and humility have earned Hufflepuff twenty points."
Perhaps triggering a certain keyword, as soon as Dumbledore finished speaking, Snape, who had been observing Michael, suddenly turned his gaze towards Kyle.
As if he had just noticed another person standing there.
However, Kyle didn't notice this and instead looked at Dumbledore, asking, "Professor, how is Michael doing? Will he be able to continue with his classes?"
"Of course," Dumbledore smiled. "Although it's a bit of a nuisance, it's not difficult to fix. A little Suppressing Potion will do the trick, and our Potions Master will have it brewed in no time."
"One day," Snape interjected as he walked over. "I guarantee that it will be delivered here before your Hufflepuff Potions class tomorrow. But before that, Mr. Jordan, there's something I must remind you of..."
Snape paused, a mocking expression on his face, "You'd best tell your friend here to keep a tight rein on his meager brain and wand. Frequent magical overexertion can render a wizard impotent, and I'm sure you know what that means."
"I do, Professor!" Kyle said.
"Good."
Snape ignored Kyle and turned to leave the hospital wing.
"I think we should be going as well," Dumbledore said. "Michael needs his rest, and I suggest you come visit him again in the afternoon."
