Chapter 30: A Man Seems to Be Following Her
Chapter 30: A Man Seems to Be Following Her
Zhou Chenglei wasn't much of a talker. He disliked chattering and, now that he was driving the tractor, he needed to focus on the road and make sure Jiang Xia was comfortable.
The constant "chirping" in his ear was grating, and he found it incredibly annoying.
So, he finally snapped, "You're so noisy!"
He thought she was even more noisy than the tractor itself!
Wen Wan's face turned beet red, feeling more embarrassed than she ever had before.
The world fell silent!
Finally, they reached the town's market. Zhou Chenglei found a spot to park the tractor and quickly hopped off to help Wen Wan unload the iron cart and the lamb.
He moved so fast that Jiang Xia found it a bit amusing. She had long noticed Zhou Chenglei's impatience, but the main character seemed oblivious, continuing to chatter away.
Wen Wan's face was still red with embarrassment, but she managed a smile. "Thank you, Brother Zhou, Sister Jiang Xia."
She couldn't help but glance at Jiang Xia, feeling like she was being made fun of.
Zhou Chenglei coldly nodded, not wanting to say another word.
He looked at Jiang Xia, patiently waiting for her to get ready.
Jiang Xia didn't look at anyone. The sun was up, and she put on a straw hat and wore arm protectors, making sure not a single inch of her skin was exposed to the sun.
Today, Jiang Xia had braided her hair into two plaits and wore a white cotton blouse with floral prints, paired with green military pants and a pair of liberation shoes. She topped it off with a straw hat. Her skin was as fair as snow, and despite the rustic outfit, she managed to look chic and beautiful, captivating everyone's attention.
People passing by the market couldn't help but glance at her a few more times.
Wen Wan was also beautiful, with a gentle and radiant charm.
But Jiang Xia was tall, with a great figure and an excellent demeanor. Her presence was commanding, like a blazing sun rising over the summer river, bright and dazzling.
Next to Jiang Xia, Wen Wan felt like the moon that hadn't yet set after the sun came up.
Her beauty seemed to fade.
Wen Wan looked at Jiang Xia, feeling annoyed: She's being so dramatic!
If she's afraid of the sun, she shouldn't go out.
No one in the countryside dressed like that for a market day, right?
Zhou Chenglei must think the same, right?
Wen Wan glanced at Zhou Chenglei and saw him staring at Jiang Xia without blinking.
Wen Wan: "..."
She looked down at her white dress, now stained with a bit of sheep's blood, blushed, and quickly pushed the iron cart away.
"Let's go!" Once Jiang Xia was fully equipped, she picked up a yellow-green plastic basket and headed toward the market.
The market was a long street, with the first section mostly selling chickens, ducks, geese, and rabbits. Since they already had chickens and ducks at home, they didn't need to buy any.
Jiang Xia saw some baby geese, green and fluffy, and thought they were adorable.
"Want to raise geese?" Zhou Chenglei asked, shielding her from passing pedestrians.
Jiang Xia nodded and then shook her head. "I want to eat goose meat, but let's not buy them now. Let's keep going!"
Jiang Xia continued walking, and Zhou Chenglei followed without a word.
The street was littered with chicken and goose feathers, and they walked a bit faster.
Zhou Chenglei led Jiang Xia to a section selling handicrafts.
Jiang Xia saw many bamboo baskets and sieves, but only one stall sold bamboo beds, chairs, and rattan furniture. Not far away, there were wooden furniture pieces, all simple in design with no intricate patterns or decorations.
Jiang Xia ran her hand over a bamboo bed, her eyes filled with appreciation.
"This bamboo bed is beautiful! We could buy it and place it in the courtyard. We could build a grape arbor and put the bed underneath. In the summer, we could hang a mosquito net and sleep there; it would be so cool and refreshing."
Zhou Chenglei: "Uncle, how much for this bamboo bed?"
The uncle quoted a price and added, "No haggling!"
Zhou Chenglei: "I'll take it."
Jiang Xia looked at the bamboo chairs. "What about buying a few bamboo chairs? Sitting on the long bench for meals feels like being on a seesaw. I always worry that if the other person suddenly stands up, the bench will tip over."
Zhou Chenglei then turned to the shop owner and said, "I’ll also need six bamboo chairs."
Jiang Xia chimed in, "These recliners look so comfortable! Why don’t we buy two more? We can move them out to the courtyard in the evening, lie down, and enjoy the breeze and the stars. How nice would that be!"
The shop owner replied, "These are rattan chairs, a bit more expensive, but far more comfortable than bamboo recliners."
Zhou Chenglei glanced at the recliners, recalling the last time he had washed her hair. She had mentioned that lying down made it easier and kept her eyes and clothes dry.
"Two, please."
The shop owner beamed, "Sure thing! Take a look around and see if you need anything else. I have a lot of items. How about some baskets and sieves?"
In the end, Zhou Chenglei bought a bamboo bed, six bamboo chairs, two recliners, a covered bamboo basket, two trays, several round sieves of different sizes, a bamboo colander, a fish basket, and a conical hat.
Seeing Jiang Xia pick up and inspect items, Zhou Chenglei bought them all.
The couple ended up purchasing most of the items from the stall. The vendor smiled widely, showing his white teeth, and offered to help them load the items onto the tractor.
Zhou Chenglei paid and said they would come back to pick up the goods after finishing their shopping.
The couple continued walking. Jiang Xia spotted a woodworking shop with a solid wood sofa and a matching coffee table, both simple and sturdy.
Jiang Xia commented, "These look quite practical. We can put them in the living room. Add some cushions and throw pillows, and it’ll be very comfortable. The coffee table completes the set, and it should look great in our old house."
Zhou Chenglei led Jiang Xia to the woodworking shop and bought the solid wood sofa, a wooden coffee table, and a study desk for Zhou Zhou.
The shop owner was eager to help them load the items onto the tractor.
Zhou Chenglei then went to a nearby general store to buy a large iron pot and a coal stove before helping to load all the furniture onto the tractor.
Jiang Xia decided to explore the market further, looking for more items.
She bought three pounds of fresh water chestnuts, two pounds of mountain hawthorns, three pineapples, four melons, and half a rack of pork ribs.
Wen Wan watched Jiang Xia shopping as if money were no object. Whatever she liked, she bought without a second thought.
Wen Wan, on the other hand, had to stand and shout to sell her lamb, her eyes darkening with envy.
Would she have a life like this after Jiang Xia and Zhou Chenglei divorced, and she married Zhou Chenglei?
Jiang Xia continued walking through the market, looking for more items, when someone grabbed her arm from behind. "Xia."
Zhou Chenglei had finished loading the items onto the tractor and was looking for Jiang Xia.
Wen Wan, seeing Zhou Chenglei searching, called out, "Brother Zhou, are you looking for Sister Jiang Xia?"
Zhou Chenglei turned to her, "Did you see her?"
Wen Wan pointed ahead, "I saw Sister Jiang Xia buying something up ahead. A man seemed to be following her, but with so many people in the market, I’m not sure if he was actually following her. He just glanced at her a few times, which is normal, given how beautiful Sister Jiang Xia is."
Zhou Chenglei immediately started walking briskly in the direction she pointed.
Wen Wan bit her lip, realizing she might have said too much, making it sound like she was trying to cause trouble.
But she was genuinely worried that Jiang Xia might get into trouble.
Earlier, Wu Qizhi had come to buy lamb and flirted with her.
He was Jiang Xia’s man, so why was he flirting with her?
Unable to resist, she said, "Aren’t you afraid Sister Jiang Xia will see you?"
She looked in the direction of Jiang Xia, and Wu Qizhi followed her gaze, spotting Jiang Xia.
He quickly chased after her.
Wen Wan could no longer see Jiang Xia, the crowd was too dense. She felt uneasy and worried, which was why she had alerted Zhou Chenglei.
