Chapter 3: Saving a Life, A Rare Skill
Chapter 3: Saving a Life, A Rare Skill
On the third day of the Abyssal descent, all the metahumans summoned to the Abyss Battlefield had their countdown timers on their data panels change to five days.
While others might not understand the significance of this countdown, Lu Heng was well aware that this was a perilous journey into the Abyss where death could come at any moment.
Thus, Lu Heng dedicated himself to practicing the Seven-Segment Sword Technique, striving to enhance his combat prowess and prepare for the impending Abyssal battlefield.
He practiced until dusk, significantly improving his swordsmanship, and his stomach growled with hunger. He then headed downstairs for dinner.
First floor of the school cafeteria.
Su Muyue had finished serving herself and stood by the window, hesitating over whether to use her ticket for the lotus root and pork bone soup.
She loved lotus root soup, but it was a little expensive for her.
Just as she was deliberating, that villain appeared again.
Lu Heng walked up beside her, tilted his head to glance at her, and asked, "Where's my meal ticket? Did you take it?"
"Huh?"
Su Muyue was stunned once more, but her thin skin prompted her to quickly take out the ticket for the lotus root soup and hand it over.
Lu Heng grinned, revealing a wide smile, and took the ticket to buy the lotus root and pork bone soup.
Feeling aggrieved, Su Muyue pursed her lips, found an empty seat, and started eating silently.
After a few bites, the villain sat down opposite her and placed the lotus root and pork bone soup in front of her.
Having been teased for two consecutive days, Su Muyue felt aggrieved and held back tears as she asked, "What are you trying to do?"
"It's just a soup, don't overthink it," Lu Heng quickly explained.
"I can't accept things from others without a reason," Su Muyue stated firmly.
"This was bought with your money. I'll pour it out if you don't drink it," Lu Heng said, picking up the soup bowl as if to pour it out.
"No..." Su Muyue hesitated, thinking about how she had spent 10 yuan on the lotus root soup and couldn't bear to waste it.
"If you feel embarrassed, just lend me your Chinese notes from last semester. I want to review Chinese, but I didn't take any notes before," Lu Heng casually made up an excuse.
Su Muyue, half-believing and half-doubting, took out her Chinese notebook from her backpack and hesitantly handed it to Lu Heng.
Lu Heng took it and placed it on the table before starting to eat.
...
In the following days, whenever Lu Heng had free time from his training, he would appear punctually at mealtimes, sitting across from Su Muyue and occasionally treating her to a soup or a meat dish.
After having a few meals together, they became somewhat familiar with each other.
Feeling indebted, Su Muyue took the initiative to offer to tutor Lu Heng.
Lu Heng waved his hand in refusal, "You don't need to tutor me. Just do me a favor."
"What favor?" Su Muyue asked, her face showing confusion.
Lu Heng took out his phone and displayed a string of numbers, saying, "Remember this number."
Su Muyue had a good memory, and after reciting it twice, she nodded, "I've memorized it."
Lu Heng spoke in a solemn tone, "If someone bullies you or you encounter danger, call this number."
"Huh?"
Su Muyue was stunned again, then realized that the number belonged to Lu Heng's phone.
...
Friday afternoon, Physical Education Class.
Su Muyue didn't enjoy PE class because when she ran, two parts of her body would shake excessively, attracting strange gazes from other students.
But she felt too embarrassed to ask the teacher for leave, so she endured and tried to keep up whenever she could.
Su Muyue followed her classmates around the track, and from the shade of a tree, someone was watching her.
Several students, including the leader, Gong Chusheng, were gathered under the tree, whistling at her.
Among them, Gong Chusheng's eyes were fixed on Su Muyue.
A girl with heavy makeup and a tough demeanor asked angrily, "Do you think she's pretty?"
Gong Chusheng didn't even glance at her, replying indifferently, "Yes, she's pretty."
"Gong Chusheng, do you want to die?" The girl became even angrier.
"Control your temper, or one day I'll throw you into Donghu Lake to feed the fish," Gong Chusheng said, taking a sip of his beer.
...
That evening, after evening self-study.
Su Muyue, carrying her backpack, walked out of the school gate to buy stationery.
As she turned the corner of the street, someone blocked her path.
She quickly recognized Gong Chusheng and hurriedly took a step back, lowering her head to try to pass by him.
Gong Chusheng reached out and stopped her, pointing to the car, "Get in."
Su Muyue shook her head vigorously and turned to go back to school.
Gong Chusheng lit a cigarette, took a puff, and said leisurely, "Your mother works at the clothing factory, right? One word from me, and she'll lose her job."
Su Muyue immediately became worried and turned back, asking anxiously, "What do you want?"
Gong Chusheng opened the car door, and his lackey dragged her backpack, pulling her into the car.
...
In her memory, Su Muyue's incident happened during the start of the semester.
So, these days, Lu Heng was either keeping an eye on Gong Chusheng or following Su Muyue.
However, fearing that she might mistake him for a stalker, he kept a considerable distance behind her.
When he saw Su Muyue being dragged into the car, Lu Heng rushed over, but it was too late. The car had already started, speeding off towards the western suburbs.
Lu Heng hurried back to the budget hotel, hopped on his motorcycle, and chased after the car.
At that moment, his phone rang.
Lu Heng answered the call with one hand while riding with the other. On the other end of the line, Su Muyue's voice could be heard faintly:
"I'm not going, let me out."
Lu Heng rode as fast as he could, racing towards the abandoned factory from his memory.
Before he could even stop, he heard a girl's scream from the building:
"What are you doing?
Don't come near me! Get away! Get away!"
Following this was the voice of Gong Chusheng: "Ke Xiao Yu, take out your phone and start recording. Make sure to get a clear shot."
The fourth member of the group, Ke Xiao Yu, took out his phone and began recording, licking his lips as he asked, "Young Master Gong, can we... hehe..."
Su Muyu dared not think about what they were planning, and tears streamed down her face.
She had retreated to the edge of the rooftop, with no room left to back away further.
She turned around and saw the height of the building below, a sense of vertigo welling up from the depths of her heart. But as she saw Gong Chusheng and the other three surrounding her, a sense of determination rose within her, and she closed her eyes and leaped off the fourth floor.
Lu Heng arrived downstairs just in time to see Su Muyu jump down. He quickly reached out and caught her.
In the instant he caught her, Lu Heng was knocked down by the impact, slamming his back hard against the ground, letting out a muffled grunt.
Huff... huff... huff...
Su Muyu's heart was still racing, and she was breathing heavily. She had jumped with the determination to die, but the fall didn't hurt as much as she had imagined.
She opened her eyes and saw Lu Heng, and tears immediately welled up.
Lu Heng had been knocked to the ground but wasn't injured. After a moment of recovery, he helped her up and gently soothed her, "It's okay now."
At the same time...
On the abandoned building.
Gong Chusheng and the other three poked their heads out and looked down.
Initially, they were a bit worried that someone might die and cause trouble, but seeing that there was someone to cushion the fall, they couldn't help but grin:
"There's even a hero saving the beauty. Tonight's game is so exciting."
Gong Chusheng and the other three, holding baseball bats, descended the stairs and surrounded Lu Heng.
Among the four, Gong Chusheng had the most influential background, making him the leader of the group.
The second-in-command, Tang Guizhe, wore gold-framed glasses and had a scholarly appearance.
The third, Li Xiongwei, was muscular and the strongest of the four, primarily responsible for fighting.
The fourth, Ke Xiao Yu, was the one who had just recorded with his phone. He had little influence at home and held the lowest status within the group.
Seeing the four surrounding them, Su Muyu became even more afraid and hid behind Lu Heng, tightly clutching his clothes.
Lu Heng moved his neck and limbs, confirming that he hadn't injured any joints when he caught Su Muyu.
Gong Chusheng recognized Lu Heng as a student from the neighboring class and smirked, "What's up? You came to get a piece of the action? Too bad, you're just a spectator."
Lu Heng glanced at Su Muyu and pointed outside the factory gate, "You go over there first."
Su Muyu hesitated for a long time before finally taking a step to leave.
Gong Chusheng and the others didn't stop her; after all, without a car, she couldn't escape.
Su Muyu stopped at the big tree by the intersection, clutching her skirt and anxiously watching the confrontation.
Without the burden, Lu Heng felt much more relaxed. He shook off the dirt from his clothes and said, "Let's begin."
Gong Chusheng signaled the other three with his eyes, indicating it was time to make their move.
The strongest among them, Li Xiongwei, took the lead, and together with Tang Guizhe and Ke Xiao Yu, they swung their baseball bats towards Lu Heng's head.
Lu Heng quickly dodged and then punched each of them, knocking all three to the ground with three loud thuds.
The three lay on the ground, wailing as blood gushed from their noses.
Gong Chusheng's expression froze, and he immediately realized that Lu Heng was a formidable fighter. He switched to a smile and said, "So, you're this capable. From now on, follow me, and I'll give you whatever you want."
Lu Heng's gaze turned icy as he looked at Gong Chusheng, and he taunted, "I want your head. Go ahead and take it off."
Gong Chusheng's eyes narrowed, and he said, "I'm giving you a chance. Do you know who my father is? Don't be shameless."
Lu Heng walked back to his motorcycle, drew out a Han Dynasty sword, and smirked, "If your father dares to stand before me, I'll chop him up too."
"What are you trying to do?"
Gong Chusheng saw that Lu Heng had indeed drawn a sword over a meter long and started to feel afraid. He retreated while ordering the other three, "Quick! Block him!"
Li Xiongwei was muscular but not very bright. He got up and reached out to stop Lu Heng.
Lu Heng raised his sword, and blood splattered as a good head rolled onto the ground.
At this, the remaining three finally realized that Lu Heng wasn't joking and was capable of killing. They screamed in terror, "Damn! Are you crazy?"
Lu Heng swiftly swung his sword twice, chopping down the other two who were crawling on the ground, and then headed towards Gong Chusheng.
Gong Chusheng had always relied on his family's influence, doing whatever he pleased wherever he went because people feared his family's power.
However, he had never encountered a ruthless character like Lu Heng.
He retreated while trying to negotiate, "I'll give you money, as much as you want."
"I don't want money. I want your head," Lu Heng said as he slowly approached.
Gong Chusheng kept retreating but never used any special abilities.
Lu Heng didn't rush forward to kill him with his sword; instead, he wanted to force Gong Chusheng to use his skills.
Before his rebirth, Gong Chusheng had obtained an incredibly powerful rare skill, but he hadn't used it yet, indicating that he hadn't acquired that skill.
Initially, Lu Heng had wanted to find the skill crystal core through Gong Chusheng, but it seemed he would have to think of another way.
Lu Heng's eyes flashed with a sharp light, and he quickly advanced, preparing to strike Gong Chusheng with his sword.
Gong Chusheng, panicked, turned and fled, rushing into another abandoned building. He frantically took out his phone, intending to call for help.
Just at that moment...
He collided head-on with a dark shadow.
The shadow extended its sharp claws, piercing his abdomen and lifting him up.
Lu Heng recognized this shadow, his eyes narrowing as he identified the creature.
It was a Shadow Demon, capable of hiding in the shadows at night, with claws as sharp as blades that could pierce steel.
And this Shadow Demon had a chance of dropping that rare skill.
