Chapter 299: What Did You Do? How Did It Come to This?
Chapter 299: What Did You Do? How Did It Come to This?
Hermione's fair cheeks blushed red. She hadn't expected that she couldn't even offer a little help.
While discussing the improvement plan with Ivan, Hermione stammered, the redness spreading from her cheeks to her ears.
Ivan slowly noticed this and, after a moment's thought, wasn't surprised.
During the summer, he had read through the Black Family's collection of rare books and had Snape's research notes. Even if Hermione was a prodigy, she couldn't possibly keep up with his progress.
Ivan thought for a moment, then snapped his fingers.
"Sir, what do you need?" An ugly House-Elf appeared in front of the two of them.
"Dobby, go get the books I asked you to buy!" Ivan said.
"Yes, sir!" Dobby nodded.
Then, under Hermione's puzzled gaze, Dobby used Apparition to disappear and reappeared with several potions books in hand.
Ivan was very satisfied with Dobby's promptness, no wonder many wizarding families liked to keep a House-Elf.
However, Ivan didn't dare to keep Dobby around for too long. After Dobby placed the books, Ivan signaled that he could leave.
Because there might be other timelines where he would need to summon Dobby.
"If you want to help, start by reading these books", Ivan said, handing Hermione Snape's *Advanced Potions*.
Snape's research notes had long been worn out by him, and they were no longer useful to the current Ivan. But he thought this book would be very helpful to Hermione.
Hermione looked at the books, lightly gripping the Time Turner at her chest, and nodded seriously.
After assigning the learning task to the Young Witch, Ivan immersed himself in potion research.
He didn't expect Hermione to be of much help, just giving her something to do so she wouldn't disturb his research.
However, Hermione didn't give up. She quietly sat down with the books, flipping through them and taking notes on a stack of parchment, quickly filling page after page with her notes.
This went on for three days. Ivan was stunned to find that Hermione had already finished all the books and, while he was working on the potion improvement plan, she could actually offer some useful suggestions.
It was as if she had transformed.
Did you also get a power-up?
Ivan was confused but quickly noticed the signs of fatigue on Hermione's face.
Almost instantly, he thought of the Time Turner, feeling a cold sweat break out on his back. He asked seriously,
"How much time have you been traveling back these past few days?"
"Why do you ask?" Hermione, holding the books, said somewhat guiltily. "About ninety hours in total?"
"Are you sure it's only that much?" Ivan frowned. To initially grasp the content of so many potions books, ninety hours would be far from enough.
Hermione nodded, but she didn't tell Ivan that the ninety hours did not include the time they had traveled back together.
"The Time Turner is a powerful tool, but it is also very dangerous. It's a force we don't fully understand. Frequent use in a short period might cause harm to your body. And Dumbledore should have told you that using it for too long at once could lead to loss of control", Ivan warned.
“I do pay attention. I never use it for more than five hours at a time.” Hermione replied softly.
Ivan was still a bit worried and eventually dragged Hermione to the hospital wing, intending to have Madam Pomfrey check if there were any aftereffects.
In the hospital wing,
Madam Pomfrey was treating a Hufflepuff player for a fall. After hearing Ivan’s request, she gave Hermione a thorough examination.
“Miss Granger, how did you manage to get yourself into this state?” Madam Pomfrey frowned and reprimanded.
“Is it very serious?” Hermione was a bit scared.
Ivan also became tense; he didn’t want anything to happen to Hermione because of him.
“It’s not that serious, but due to being in a prolonged state of mental stress, you are mentally fatigued. Some rest will do you good,” Madam Pomfrey shook her head and explained.
Before the two could breathe a sigh of relief, Madam Pomfrey turned to Ivan.
“You too, Hals! You are in a much worse state than Miss Granger. How long has it been since you’ve had a proper night’s sleep?”
Madam Pomfrey couldn’t understand why two thirteen or fourteen-year-olds would be so exhausted that they lacked energy.
At their age, they should be at their most energetic.
School hadn’t even been in session for that long, so what had they been doing?
Ivan was a bit embarrassed; he hadn’t expected that bringing Hermione would end up implicating him as well.
However, Ivan was relieved that the issue wasn’t too serious. With more rest and some energy restorative potions, it should be fine.
It seemed that using the Time Turner wouldn’t cause any irreversible severe consequences.
Otherwise, the Ministry of Magic wouldn’t have given them this device.
These thoughts flashed through Ivan’s mind, but he still had to face the stern look from Madam Pomfrey.
Clearly, she wouldn’t let them off easily without a reasonable explanation.
“Sorry, Madam Pomfrey, we’ve had a lot of coursework lately, so we’ve been getting less rest. This might be the reason. We’ll be more careful in the future,” Ivan explained, half-truthfully.
“I’ve never seen anyone study themselves into this state,” Madam Pomfrey said, half-amused and half-concerned.
If a less accomplished young wizard had said this, she would have doubted it.
But with Ivan’s achievements over the past two years, Madam Pomfrey had heard enough to know that such dedication was fitting.
Hermione was also an outstanding student excelling in all subjects, so the explanation was plausible.
Madam Pomfrey quickly brewed two bowls of dark, murky potion and brought them over. The opaque liquid was filled with unidentifiable floating objects, making it unappealing to drink.
Can’t I just not drink it? Ivan felt quite helpless. He thought he could just brew a couple of energy restorative potions back in his room, saving himself the trouble.
Madam Pomfrey firmly shook her head.
Ivan had no choice but to pick up the bowl and gulp down the potion. It tasted incredibly bitter, like the traditional Chinese medicine he had once taken.
After drinking it, Ivan felt a cooling sensation in his brain, making him much more alert.
Ivan turned to look at Hermione, who was sipping the other bowl of potion, her brows furrowed in discomfort.
