Chapter 298: When in Trouble, Seek the Time Machine First
Chapter 298: When in Trouble, Seek the Time Machine First
"I am Jonin Shimonita Hisanobu, the proctor for the first stage of the Chunin Exams—the written test. The exam will last until 10 am, and there will be ten questions for a total of 100 points. Any score below 70 will be considered a failure, resulting in the immediate disqualification of the individual and their entire team."
Shimonita Hisanobu wrote the exam duration on the blackboard and addressed the students in the classroom.
"Seventy points," Kakashi unconsciously glanced at Obito, who was sitting two rows behind him.
While Kakashi believed that 70 points was an achievable goal, he doubted Obito's ability to attain it independently.
"You may use all your abilities to complete the test, but you must not be caught cheating. If you are caught five times, your qualification will be revoked," Shimonita Hisanobu paused and added.
Cheating was permissible in the Chunin Exams as it was considered part of the examination.
The Chunin Exams assessed candidates' overall abilities rather than a single skill. Candidates who lacked in certain areas could make up for it by obtaining information or assistance from others.
To ensure that there would be correct answers within the exam room, Konoha would also assign ninjas to infiltrate the exam disguised as candidates and provide the correct answers.
"Damn, 70 points is a high passing score!" Obito inwardly complained about Shimonita Hisanobu's announcement.
However, after his initial grumbling, Obito felt a wave of anxiety wash over him. Despite his diligent efforts over the past few days, his scores on the practice tests had only reached the 60s.
Obito took a deep breath to calm himself down and decided to pray to the all-powerful Mu Yue.
"All-powerful Mu Yue, please take me back in time by seven days so I can study for another week!" Obito prayed with his hands clasped together.
Obito felt that without Mu Yue's time-traveling powers, he would be doomed. If he failed the theory exam and caused Yahiko's team to be eliminated as well, he would be devastated.
Just as Obito was feeling utterly hopeless, he noticed that the test paper distributed looked somewhat familiar.
Obito picked up the test paper and carefully examined the questions. His expression instantly changed from worry to joy as he recognized similar questions that Mu Yue had explained to him before. Although the actual questions had some variations, the differences were not significant.
"Mu Yue truly is all-powerful!" Obito rejoiced inwardly and quickly picked up his pen to start answering the questions.
Although he had never scored 70 points before, Obito firmly believed that he could surpass his limits and achieve the lofty score of 70 this time.
However, Obito knew that this breakthrough was not due to his own abilities but the powers of Mu Yue.
"Could it be that he just happened to encounter questions that he could answer?" Kakashi speculated to himself upon noticing Obito's excited expression.
This was indeed an unusual occurrence for Kakashi, as the scope of the Chunin Exams rarely presented him with unfamiliar topics.
Kakashi then began answering the questions at lightning speed. Despite Obito's apparent confidence, Kakashi did not fully trust his teammate in this regard. He planned to finish quickly and find a way to pass the answers to Obito.
"Thank goodness for Obito and Teacher Mu Yue," Might Guy sighed in relief upon seeing the content of the test.
Mu Yue had not forgotten about Might Guy, who struggled with theory just like Obito. On that day, she had instructed Obito to take two sets of practice tests, one for himself and the other for Might Guy.
Ebisu was unaware that Might Guy had undergone an intensive crash course in answering these questions. He felt fortunate that his seat was right behind Might Guy, making it easy to pass the answers to him.
At the beginning of the exam, most candidates were focused on answering the questions, filling the exam hall with the sound of scribbling pens. After all, there was no point in trying to copy answers when no one had finished yet.
"Row four, seat five, you and your teammates may leave," Shimonita Hisanobu announced indifferently halfway through the exam.
The Grass Ninja who had been pointed out wore an incredulous expression, and he couldn't help but ask, "But aren't we allowed five chances?"
The Grass Ninja, who had been called out, wore an incredulous expression, unable to hide his dismay as he left the classroom with his teammates.
With the first team disqualified, the atmosphere in the room turned solemn and tense.
Zabuza Momochi seized this opportunity while the teachers and students were focused on the disqualified ninja. He quickly performed the Mist Concealment Technique, enveloping the room in a white fog. Then, he swiftly took his teammate's answers and began to frantically write.
Kakashi, who had finished the exam and prepared answers for Obito as well, immediately threw the answer sheet in Obito's direction, relying on his memory of his teammate's seat.
Ebisu, feeling fortunate to be seated right behind Might Guy, quickly passed the answers to him while silently lamenting the boldness of these foreign ninjas.
As quickly as it came, the thick fog dissipated as the proctors used Wind Release to clear the air, revealing a room full of obedient students.
"The exam is over. Everyone, put down your pens immediately. The exam results will be announced at 1 pm." Shimonita Hisanobu promptly ended the exam as the clock struck 10.
Having finished the exam before the allotted time, Obito confidently left his seat, feeling relieved. This was by far the easiest theory exam he had ever taken.
"Obito, how do you think you did? Do you think you got a score of 70 or above?" Upon exiting the classroom, Yahiko asked Obito with concern.
During the latter half of the exam, she had intended to pass the answers to Obito, but he signaled that it wasn't necessary.
Yahiko decided to trust him first and ask questions later, so she refrained from giving him the answers. Now, she simply wanted to hear his thoughts.
"Definitely above 70 points!" Obito replied confidently.
"That's wonderful! It looks like we'll have no problems passing the first stage of the exams," Yahiko said, clapping her hands lightly and smiling.
"I guess we can believe him this time. After all, I fed him the answers, so if he still fails, I don't know what else to do," Kakashi nodded in agreement.
He had directly provided Obito with all the answers, so as long as he copied them correctly, he should pass.
"I wanted to thank you, Kakashi, for helping Obito..." Yahiko began, but Obito quickly interrupted.
"Wait, I didn't copy your answers, Kakashi! I wrote all the answers myself," Obito explained hastily, not wanting to take credit away from his own efforts and the help of Teacher Mu Yue.
He admitted that Kakashi's provision of answers played a role, but he wanted to make it clear that he hadn't simply copied them. He had only glanced at Kakashi's sheet and then written his own, so the real MVP was Mu Yue.
"Are you sure?" Kakashi asked, looking directly into Obito's eyes.
"Of course!" Obito replied, chest puffed out with pride.
"In that case, things might get a little tricky. Yahiko, you should prepare yourself for the possibility of being disqualified along with him," Kakashi said, turning to Yahiko.
Kakashi knew Obito too well, and he could tell that Obito was telling the truth—he hadn't copied his answers.
"Hey, what do you mean by that? Are you saying I can't score 70 or above on my own?" Obito asked, feeling indignant.
"Have you ever scored above 70 in your exams at the Ninja Academy?" Kakashi countered.
"Well, that was before. I've changed now, and I have Teacher Mu Yue to help me," Obito argued, believing that people can turn their lives around and that he was a different person now.
"You'll find out soon enough when the results are announced."
"I hope you're not just boasting. After all, it affects not just you but Yahiko as well," Kakashi added, feeling a slight boost in confidence at the mention of Mu Yue's name.
