Chapter 298: The Sneaky Trio
Chapter 298: The Sneaky Trio
After returning to the castle, Kyle and his group made their way through the crowded corridors, heading towards their upcoming Transfiguration class.
Over the past two days, students had been asking about the Chamber of Secrets in almost every class.
However, not all professors were as approachable as Professor Sprout. In Transfiguration class, a Gryffindor student raised their hand during Professor McGonagall's lecture, but she was immediately cut off as soon as she mentioned the word "Chamber."
"Gryffindor, ten points deducted," Professor McGonagall said sternly, her lips pressed together. "Miss Bell, I suggest you focus more on your studies instead of such baseless legends. If I recall correctly, you still haven't managed to transfigure a button into a beetle, which was the very first lesson we had, and now Halloween has already passed. If you continue like this, you might not even pass your exams."
Katie Bell, the Gryffindor student, turned red with embarrassment and sat down, head bowed.
With this example in mind, the other students naturally refrained from asking similar questions.
Of course, this was just the Gryffindors... The Hufflepuffs were a different story.
They had just learned the truth from Professor Sprout and saw no need to bother Professor McGonagall with the same question.
Looking at their classmates who were still in the dark, the young badgers felt a sense of superiority.
The Gryffindors were no better than this...
When the class ended, Kyle was about to head straight to the Great Hall on the first floor for lunch, but as soon as he arrived, he heard a series of rapid popping sounds coming from above.
These sounds were all too familiar to him; they were the explosions triggered by the devices in the Mandrake Bathroom.
Without hesitation, Kyle turned and sprinted upstairs, quickly drawing his wand and box.
"Is it the person with the diary or... the Basilisk!" Kyle's heart raced with tension.
If it was a person, that would be one thing, but if it was the Basilisk... he wasn't sure if it would still obey his commands.
And if it didn't... could Norbert, the Norwegian Ridgeback, handle it?
With these thoughts racing through his mind, Kyle rushed to the corridor where the Mandrake Bathroom was located.
However, when he arrived, he suddenly froze. The people standing at the bathroom door were all familiar to him.
"Harry, Hermione, Ron?" Kyle asked instinctively. "What are you doing here?"
The trio seemed startled by the series of explosions, but they snapped out of their daze when they heard Kyle's voice.
Harry turned around, stammering, "We... we were just passing by... yeah, passing by!"
As he spoke, Kyle noticed that Hermione was holding a large, moldy-looking book.
When she realized Kyle was looking at her, she quickly hid the book behind her back, her guilty expression almost written on her face.
Although she moved quickly, Kyle caught a glimpse of the word "Potions" on the book's cover. If he wasn't mistaken, it was a book on powerful potions, and he had an identical handwritten copy in his box.
Kyle didn't pay much attention to this. Seeing the trio's dark faces, he finally felt a sense of relief.
At least it wasn't the Basilisk.
"Whether you were passing by or for any other reason, I think you should leave quickly," Kyle said. "We just finished Transfiguration class, and Professor McGonagall probably hasn't gone far."
"Professor McGonagall?!"
The trio reacted as if they had stepped on a cat's tail, almost jumping in surprise.
"If she finds out we blew up the bathroom..."
"Ron, we didn't blow up the bathroom!" Hermione corrected him. "We just opened the door, and we didn't even go inside."
"I know, but Professor McGonagall doesn't!"
"Never mind, just run!"
Perhaps remembering the lesson from Halloween, the trio didn't hesitate and took off running.
As they passed by Kyle, they didn't forget to thank him.
"Thanks for the warning, Kyle."
"We're leaving first!"
The three of them rushed to the stairs and began running towards the Gryffindor Tower.
Just as they turned the corner, a tabby cat gracefully leaped onto the nearby railing on the other side of the corridor. Its amber eyes scanned the area, quickly spotting Kyle and the chaotic state of the Lavender Bathroom.
The tabby cat then jumped off the railing and transformed into Professor McGonagall in mid-air.
"So it was here..."
She hurriedly approached the bathroom, "Merlin's beard, what happened here? Was someone practicing Blasting Curses?"
Kyle also came closer.
It had to be said that Professor McGonagall's description was a bit exaggerated.
Inside the bathroom, aside from the walls, ceiling, and the corridor entrance being blackened by smoke, there was no other damage.
After all, the "Exploding Textbooks" were Zacharias' joke props, and aside from being a bit loud, their destructive power was almost non-existent.
Otherwise, Kyle wouldn't have dared to set them up in the school.
Professor McGonagall soon noticed this as well, but she was still angry.
"Professor McGonagall, I came here because I heard the noise," Kyle said quickly.
Professor McGonagall glanced at him and nodded.
"Were there any people here when you arrived?"
"There were three," Kyle pointed towards the stairs, "They were just running down the stairs when I got here."
"Who were they!" Professor McGonagall asked, pursing her lips.
Kyle stretched out his hand and pointed at the blackened wall, "Their faces were as dark as this wall, I couldn't see them clearly."
Professor McGonagall looked at the bathroom wall, then at the darkened corridor entrance where three distinct human silhouettes were visible. She seemed to realize something, and a faint smile appeared on her previously stern face.
"It's Zacharias' stuff again..."
She didn't intend to pursue Harry and the others, but instead, she took out her wand and restored the bathroom to its original state, then chased away the people around.
The commotion had attracted quite a few students who were curious about the spectacle, thinking that someone else had been attacked like Filch.
During this process, Mandrake remained quiet as if she didn't exist. Only after Professor McGonagall left did she cautiously poke her transparent head out.
"Those three annoying people were chased away... I didn't expect the things you placed to actually work."
"What did you think they were," Kyle said softly as he returned, looking at Mandrake.
"Your unwanted old books..." Mandrake said, "Will you put new ones here again?"
"Of course."
The last time Kyle went to Hogsmeade, he bought quite a few things from Zacharias, including the "Exploding Textbooks."
Although there were only two of them, the commotion they created was enough.
...
When Kyle returned to the Great Hall, lunch had already started. Professor McGonagall was sitting at the main guest table, deep in conversation with Professor Flitwick.
Harry and his two friends arrived even later, entering with their heads down halfway through the meal.
They had all changed into new clothes and were fixing their messy, unruly hair as they walked.
At the main guest table, Professor McGonagall glanced at them thoughtfully.
...
"The Quidditch match is tomorrow."
Beside them, Harris was talking to Cedric, "Gryffindor and Slytherin, we can finally see the power of those brooms and their new Seeker."
Harris was referring to Draco Malfoy, the only newcomer.
Cedric nodded, "I'll keep an eye on him."
"I hope he made the team because of those brooms and not because he's a genius like Potter," Harris said with a hint of hope.
Seven brand new Cleansweep 2001 brooms were already impressive, but if they also had an excellent Seeker... the other three teams wouldn't stand a chance.
