Chapter 298: Each Day is One Less Day with Lanchi
Chapter 298: Each Day is One Less Day with Lanchi
On a wintry morning in Hellowe, the cold was biting, and the sky was still murky, with faint morning light gradually brightening the eastern horizon.
In a quiet corner of the dormitory area of the Protoss Royal Magic Academy, the front yard of a beige brick mansion was covered with a thin layer of frost.
It seemed to have snowed lightly the night before.
The windows of the mansion were a bit hazy due to the contrast between the warm interior and the chilly outdoors, and through this haze, one could vaguely make out the sparse greenery dotting the window sill, and the frost flowers of ice crystals clinging to the bare branches in the courtyard. Each leaf seemed frozen in time, awaiting the arrival of spring. On this quiet morning, everything appeared serene.
Today was another weekday, Thursday.
The weekend was almost here.
Zestila rose early in her bedroom and prepared herself for the day.
Then, she walked through the living room and opened the door of the mansion, stepping out expressionlessly.
She stood by the door, her hand resting lightly on the door frame, and from a distance, she could see that the courtyard was fast becoming a garden of animals.
Under the same old tree, on the swing, Lanchi sat feeding the gathered little animals, while the sleek black fox lay elegantly on the ground, as soft and smooth as a sofa.
As he gently scattered grains of corn on the grass, causing the little birds to hop about and chirp merrily in search of food, he also turned his head to chat with his new animal friend, the fox.
Even from a distance, one could hear the casual conversation between the teacher and the large fox, carried on the cold morning air.
"Woof!"
"You're asking if I know any other Great Demons?"
"Woof!"
"What do you mean by 'other' Great Demons? Do you really think of me as a Great Demon?"
"Woof."
"Don't you dare revoke my demon credentials! Everyone knows I'm human."
"Woof woof!"
"You're still concerned about the Great Demons, huh..."
"Woof."
"Don't get your hopes up. Even if there are other surviving Great Demons out there, they might be embarrassments to the title."
"Woof woof?"
"Take, for example, the type who appears aloof, dignified, and gorgeous on the outside, but is actually a twisted foodie at home, completely giving in to a life of indulgence and no longer willing to strive for anything. Does that sound like a Great Demon to you?"
"Woof."
The big fox lifted its head and shook it.
"Ah, I'm worried about her too. She's well past marriageable age, yet she still insists on identifying as a young human woman. Who knows how long she can keep up this charade."
"Woof."
"Indeed, a disgrace to the demon race. Expel her from the demon registry!"
And at the doorway of the neighboring mansion.
"..."
Zestila listened quietly, her eyes gradually narrowing, and she rubbed them.
"?"
Her eyes must be playing tricks on her, for she thought she saw a red glow over the teacher's head, but it seemed like an illusion, and when she looked again, it was gone.
After a moment's thought.
It was best to pretend nothing had happened.
Although she had considered asking the knowledgeable teacher about this phenomenon, it would be impolite to bring up potentially ominous topics on a beautiful morning.
Zestila still couldn't understand the specifics of the effortless conversation between the teacher and the large fox.
However, she believed that these chat logs were stored in the simple-minded fox's memory.
Given time, there would surely be an opportunity to read them.
"The teacher has a long life ahead and will live well."
Zestila shook her head slightly and walked down the garden path.
By the end of yesterday's monthly assessment day, Lanchi had already accumulated a bounty of over a million credit points.
In the end, 20% of that amount, or 249,535 credits, was transferred to Zestila.
Zestila looked at the number on her bracelet and didn't know what to say.
It was as if the floodgates had opened.
She had no idea what the teacher had done in the Shadow World.
Only now did she understand the true meaning of his words when they had first disembarked from the train and walked through the streets of Hellowe—his offer to "bring me along if you find the Shadow World too challenging" had been a genuine promise to speedrun the place with her.
Even after witnessing the teacher's prowess, Zestila now only wanted to venture into the Shadow World on her own, instead of relying entirely on Lanchi's protection.
She felt that she had learned a lot from Lanchi and gained new insights into her path. It was time to put her knowledge into practice.
Soon, she found herself standing before Lanchi.
"Teacher, are you busy today?" Zestila asked.
Her tone remained the same as always, but it now carried a hint of added respect.
"Not particularly. What's up?" Lanchi replied, pondering. He had already wrapped up most of his meetings the day before.
There wasn't much left for him to do at the school; he just needed to have a final talk with Associate Professor Cid about the Empire before leaving the school grounds for good.
"Then let's go and claim the additional reward for the Pink Sacred item." Zestila said.
In addition to the reward of over 200,000 credits, there was also an item that was usually unavailable even with credits.
It was an item of Pink Sacred grade, essentially belonging to the treasury of the Protoss Empire, with each piece registered and strictly controlled within the Empire, making it an item prohibited from private transactions.
"Alright, the Endless Library should be open for business now." Lanchi replied as he put away the feed and stood up, having already prepared for their departure. The large fox, sleek as black silk, perched elegantly on his shoulder.
The treasury, located deep within the Endless Library, was not far from the Protoss Royal Magic Academy, just a short walk away.
Zestila nodded.
When choosing the reward, not only would she need to use her bracelet, but she was also curious to see how the teacher would choose the magic cards.
...
Half an hour later.
On a wintry workday in Hellowe, the commercial district bustled with activity, the temperature doing little to deter people from their usual work and life.
Along the sidewalks flanking the tall buildings, pedestrians clad in thick winter attire strode by, their exhaled breaths mixing with the surrounding air to form wisps of light fog.
In the midst of this bustling crowd, a young man and the girl who followed him made their way through the streets until they reached a spacious square.
The Endless Library, a gigantic structure located south of Hellowe, served as a treasure trove of culture and knowledge for this peculiar city.
What set this library apart from others was its blend of ancient and modern architectural styles, combining Gothic pointed arches, futuristic metallic lines, and spinning fictional structures, as if it were a confluence of time and space.
The two walked purposefully through the entrance, a massive bronze door, and gazed upon the ceiling adorned with carvings of various totems and ancient legendary creatures. The exposed spacious hall featured a huge floating crystal ball at its center, displaying constantly changing text and images.
"I haven't been to this library since arriving in Hellowe," Lanchi remarked with a smile as he looked at the navigation hub.
"I get lost every time," Zestila admitted, clearly not a fan of the building.
Due to its immense size and complex interior layout, it was easy to lose one's way within its confines. Some important sections were protected by powerful barriers, inaccessible without permission, resulting in numerous dead ends that made it challenging to navigate even with a map.
For most citizens and travelers in the imperial capital of Hellowe, the Endless Library was primarily a place for exploration and the discovery of wonders.
However, they wouldn't need to spend much time there today.
Their destination was the Self-Service Retrieval Room, where they could use Zestila's student bracelet to select the Pink Sacred-level reward from the catalog.
