Chapter 297: Mr. Rod is Too Reliable
Chapter 297: Mr. Rod is Too Reliable
Romeo stormed off, punching Master Makarov in the face before leaving.
Makarov was not about to make a big fuss and organize a rescue mission just because a mage hadn't returned on time.
Rod felt that this kid had potential; at such a young age, he had managed to defeat one of the Ten Wizard Saints in a fit of rage.
"Honestly."
Makarov wouldn't get angry at a child over such a minor incident, but this little tantrum did stir some worry within him.
However, unless it was a situation like Rod and Elfman's, where they actively sought help, it would be disrespectful to interfere in someone else's quest without their consent.
Furthermore, they couldn't be certain that Makarov was in danger.
In the eyes of most guild members, with his experience and strength, dealing with a few Vulcans wouldn't be an issue.
Even Rod didn't see any problem, as he had provided detailed information about the monsters, climate, and terrain.
He had been punched by that purple flame when he was looking for sparring partners, and that man was incredibly strong.
But if Romeo was this concerned, Rod didn't mind discreetly releasing some wild monsters to check.
"Mira, I..."
Bang! Natsu, who had already chosen a decent job, suddenly slammed the quest board with the mission request.
This action annoyed Nab, the guardian of the quest board, but Natsu had already left without a backward glance.
"Natsu..." Happy followed, munching on the half-eaten grilled fish he was carrying.
Lucy was sitting at the front desk, drinking a beverage, and was about to ask Mira about renting a place nearby.
But Natsu's action disrupted her train of thought, "What's wrong with Natsu?"
"You must be thinking of him, right, Lucy? Natsu's father also disappeared suddenly. Well, it was more like his foster father, a dragon," Mira explained.
Lucy was shocked, "What?!”
Mira proceeded to tell Lucy about Natsu's background.
"Natsu has a very impulsive personality, so Lucy, can I ask you for a favor?"
"Do you want me to help Natsu? No problem!" Lucy was enthusiastic, and she turned her face away, covering her mouth with her hand as she whispered, "Mira-san personally asked me. If I succeed this time, maybe I can replace Mr. Rod's position and become the strongest newcomer!
No, he's not a newcomer anymore, so wouldn't that make me the strongest newcomer?"
Lucy imagined the scene of being praised by everyone when she first joined the guild and couldn't help but giggle with delight.
Rod sighed and said to Mira, "I have a feeling there's one more idiot in the guild now."
Are all the main characters this dense?
Mira patted Rod's hand, telling him to stop talking nonsense.
"In that case, I'll leave it to you, Lucy," Mira said with a smile after some thought. "Come over to my place when you're free, and I'll treat you to something."
Lucy readily agreed, "Okay! It's a deal!"
Her fan mindset hadn't adjusted yet, and she was thrilled at the thought of visiting Mira-san's house.
"Let's go, I'll give you a ride."
"You'll give me a ride?" Lucy followed Rod, feeling a bit dazed, to the guild entrance.
"Summon, Canyon Swift Crab!"
In Lucy's astonished gaze, two large green crabs appeared on the street.
"Star Spirit Magic? Crab Constellation... No, I have the key to the Crab Constellation, Kesha, with me," Lucy touched the key chain at her waist, "But, how can you open two gates at once?"
"This is different from Star Spirit Magic, I'll explain later. For now, let's go after Natsu first, he can't ride in the carriage."
"Oh..."
Mira smiled and reminded her, "Be careful with your skirt, Rod can see all around them."
"Huh?!" Lucy nervously held down her short skirt.
"That's unnecessary, I won't do something perverted like that," Rod said, tugging at Mira's face as a punishment.
"Besides, Harobe Mountain is a snow-capped mountain, and she'll change into long pants and a coat before going, right?"
"I... I guess so?" Lucy's eyes darted around, clearly not having considered this. She hadn't even thought of bringing a change of clothes, let alone wearing them.
"...What a clueless idiot." Rod sighed, "Hurry and get it, and I'll grab something for you too."
At the counter, the Guild Master, who was about to sneak some alcohol, spotted Rod and immediately closed his eyes, pretending to be asleep. He watched as Rod left with a bulging bag, opening one eye and then the other.
"Isn't this an incredibly expensive magic book? And you can't even buy it in the magic shop!" Lucy exclaimed in surprise. She couldn't believe he was giving her something so valuable.
"Use it when you're in danger. No matter how expensive the book is, it's not as important as your life," Rod said, "If Makarov had listened to me and carried a magic book, I wouldn't have to worry about him now."
Lucy, with mixed feelings, climbed onto the River Crab and set off.
She felt like she had learned so much today that she didn't know where to start when writing in her diary later.
After sending out two Mobile Eyes, Rod felt more at ease. Soon, he could provide live updates to Makarov and Mira about Natsu and Lucy's movements.
The only downside was that he couldn't hear what they were saying.
After some thought, Rod dispatched a group of Shadow Wolves, instructing them to stay hidden during peaceful times and only emerge to assist during battles, following Natsu's commands.
...
Natsu, who was about to rent a carriage, spotted the familiar giant crab and felt delighted.
He was worried about not having money for the rental, and riding in a carriage would be uncomfortable.
But...
"Why are you here? Where's Rod?" Lucy asked indignantly.
"Why are you making that face? I came to help you on purpose!" Happy spoke bluntly, "Love, Rod is more reliable."
"I'll pull out your whiskers, kitty."
"Hehe..." Natsu suddenly laughed. That guy, Rod, even though he didn't come, was still concerned about Makarov.
But it didn't matter if he wasn't here; having the giant crab was enough.
Natsu skillfully mounted the River Crab, gripping its claws, and shouted, "Let's go! Charge!"
"There are two of them, why are you pushing me off?"
Lucy almost fell off due to Natsu's sudden movement and tightly held onto his backpack. As the crab sprinted, she fluttered in the wind like a flag, "Slow down!"
Meanwhile, Happy rode the other River Crab and overtook them, "Let's race, Natsu!"
"Come on, Happy!"
"Noooooo!" Lucy's scream dissipated in the wind.
At the same time, Rod, who had been providing live updates to Mira at intervals, said, "They're getting along well and have already started playing happily."
Mira smiled, "That's wonderful."
...
The two River Crabs, urged by Natsu and Happy, sprinted at full speed, far surpassing the pace of a regular carriage.
Soon, they brought the trio into the chilly winds of Harobe Mountain.
Lucy, shivering in the cold, put on her cotton jacket and couldn't help but exclaim, "Thank goodness I listened to Mr. Rod."
Natsu made a face, expressing his annoyance, "That guy must have nagged you with a hundred things you can't do, right?"
"No, he just told me to bring clothes and gave me..." Lucy paused, then asked, "Does Mr. Rod like to nag?"
"He'd probably make a hundred plans even if he lost a cat."
Although Natsu occasionally wanted to team up with Rod, and had been influenced by him in recent months, it didn't mean he liked Rod's style.
"Love! Rod is reliable. When you team up with him, you don't need to worry about anything except fighting, and even Natsu can't cause trouble," Happy said.
Lucy was moved by the last part, "If that's the case, he's indeed reliable."
"What did you say? Next time we team up, we'll cause some trouble just for you!"
Lucy sighed, "There's no need to intentionally prove that..."
