Chapter 296: You Can Trust Him
Chapter 296: You Can Trust Him
After the day's practice ended, Hermione walked back with a furrowed brow, silent and lost in thought.
"Hermione, you can’t still be thinking about Trelawney’s nonsense, can you? She’s just an old fraud", Ron tried to persuade her. "I almost fell for it too, but after I made up a month’s worth of bad luck and still got an Outstanding, I stopped believing her."
He then turned to Harry, his enthusiasm rising. "I learned a trick from Professor Hep. If you ever split again, I can help—" He gave Harry a meaningful look.
Harry shuddered, feeling little comfort from the gesture.
He fiddled with a Muggle coin in his hand, a seven-sided fifty pence piece that glinted in the sunlight.
Ron stared at the coin. "I still have the one you gave me last year, but... Professor Hep is really something, coming up with this idea."
Before the practice ended, Professor Hep had asked Harry for a coin. Harry had intended to pull out a Warmnut but instead found this one in the corner of his pocket. After confirming it wouldn’t interfere, Harry handed the silver coin to the professor, who cast a spell on it.
At the time, the professor had told him, "I can’t watch your progress every day, so let’s make a deal. You can’t use apparition outside the Room of Requirement until it turns into a brilliant gold."
Back in the common room, they saw the twins working on transfiguring a table.
It was a lion with dull eyes, its ginger fur limp and lifeless, its face as if it had been punched. Harry suspected the twins had taken inspiration from Hermione’s pet, Crookshanks.
"Still no good!" Jordan Lee sighed, pinching the lion’s drooping ear in frustration.
"You have to make some compromises", Fred said. "At least it can move, right?"
"I don’t want to ride this thing out. I’ll be a laughingstock!" Jordan Lee said fearfully.
Harry asked Seamus, who was watching with interest, "What are they doing?"
Seamus explained enthusiastically, "They’re trying to create a lion mount, exclusive to Gryffindor. Unfortunately, the Transfiguration isn’t quite working out..."
Harry couldn’t help but recall the Slytherin girl who had ridden a giant snake down the corridor, showing off. Although she was later given detention by Professor Mcgonagall, her name had become well-known.
Many people secretly envied her and wanted to create something similar.
"Bang!"
"I still don’t understand why Dumbledore hasn’t canceled the Divination class", Hermione said, staring seriously at the lion the twins had transfigured. After a moment, she turned to Harry and Ron.
During the evening Runic Script tutoring, Professor Hep provided more information—
"Because this branch of magic was once truly magnificent, and it is indeed useful", Felix explained.
"But Trelawney—"
"I don’t know what Dumbledore was thinking back then, and I’ve never seen a genuine prophecy. However, Sybill’s ancestor, Cassandra Trelawney, was confirmed to have had the gift of divination. She was known as a ‘seer of the future.’”
Hermione’s eyes widened as she watched Professor Hep’s fingers trace the air. Golden mist condensed into a piece of paper, the words on it gleaming. It was a personal account:
“I can see a vague shadow around a person, more concealed than ghosts—these shadows don’t always appear, and most of the time, they have no impact, until a certain moment when they transform into a vision, and I see the future… I once saw an endless tide of darkness surrounding a Dark Wizard, and two months later, he orchestrated a massacre… I deeply blame myself for it. The Third Eye can be a burden…”
Hermione stared blankly at the golden paper, which floated gently in the air. She whispered, “This is…”
“A letter from Cassandra Trelawney to a friend, which I obtained by chance after a hundred years,” Felix said. “Cassandra didn’t live long, perhaps for this reason. Her gift did not bring her happiness. In the last few years of her life, she distanced herself from her family and lived in seclusion.”
“So, you think Professor Trelawney inherited her ancestor’s gift?”
“I suspect it’s a partial inheritance, judging by her daily behavior.”
Hermione sighed, realizing she didn’t dislike Sibyl Trelawney as much anymore.
After a moment of silence, she patted her face and regained her composure. “Professor, should I continue practicing Luminos today?”
“Yes, since it’s the first Ancient Magic I plan to teach at the club, it’s best to be cautious. In all of Hogwarts, only you have mastered all the Runic Scripts required for this spell.”
Hermione nodded, took a deep breath, and a series of Runic Scripts appeared before her. These magical symbols, centered around ‘Light,’ continuously assembled and converged, like pieces of a puzzle.
Light bloomed at her fingertips, a gentle, milky white glow that was neither harsh nor blinding. Hermione carefully controlled the spell, but her magic began to spill uncontrollably…
She must not let the magic take control. “Oh, it’s not working again—” A fragment of light shattered in Hermione’s hand, and she said dejectedly, “I can’t even try this a few times. I managed it in the Mind Chamber.”
Felix smiled. “You’re learning quickly. I expect you to have it mastered by the end of the Easter break.”
Hermione wiped her sweat and glanced at the Marauder’s Map on the workbench. She couldn’t help but ask, “Professor, has that Dark Wizard not shown up yet?”
“Yes,” Felix replied, somewhat helplessly. “All we can do is wait.”
After a long pause, Hermione bit her lip and said with a conflicted expression, “Professor, can the Fidelius Charm be broken?”
Felix stared into her eyes. “Hermione Granger… what have you deduced?”
“Oh, I…” Hermione pressed her lips together and said shakily, “Sirius Black was imprisoned in Azkaban for not only a shameful murder but also for being a loyal spy for the Dark Lord. He betrayed Harry’s parents!”
“If I’m not mistaken, you have a ‘but’ coming,” Felix said calmly, looking at her.
“But it doesn’t make sense! Even if Black hated Ron’s rat more, perhaps due to internal conflicts among the Death Eaters or personal grudges, he wouldn’t let Harry go. I’ve considered a possibility and looked into it, but the Fidelius Charm cannot be broken by external forces…”
Felix fell silent for a moment, then said seriously, “Hermione Granger, if… and I mean if, something unexpected happens and you encounter him—Sirius Black, Granger, you can trust him, especially if Harry is in danger!”
