Chapter 294: Prophecy and Omen
Chapter 294: Prophecy and Omen
Ivan followed the silver ladder all the way to the Divination classroom.
The space inside was quite enclosed, with at least twenty small round tables. The deep red curtains were drawn tightly, blocking out the sunlight from outside. Only a few rays of light seeped through the curtains, casting a reddish glow over the entire classroom.
On the round walls, there were many shelves, holding dirty quills, candle stubs, tattered playing cards, and a pile of teacups.
It looked like the setting for some mysterious ritual.
The young wizards found their seats, and Ivan and the others naturally sat together.
"Where's the professor? Hasn't she come yet?" Ron asked, sounding a bit surprised.
"No, Trelawney is already here", Ivan shook his head, gesturing for Ron to look behind the right curtain.
A thin figure with thick, round glasses stood there, peering at them through a translucent veil.
Ron was startled, and Sybill Trelawney's ethereal, muffled voice echoed through the classroom.
"Welcome!"
"It's wonderful to finally see you in the material world", Trelawney emerged from behind the curtain.
She wasn't particularly tall, wearing a dark green silk robe. Her long, thin neck was adorned with countless chains, and her light golden hair was unkempt, giving her an air of eccentric mystery.
Her presence immediately captivated the young wizards who had come to class, and her words were even more chilling.
In just a few minutes, Trelawney had ominously greeted Neville's grandmother, warned Lavender that her greatest fear would come true on October 16th, and claimed that around Easter, one of the people in the room would leave forever.
The young wizards were visibly shaken, and many of them turned their gaze towards Harry.
They suspected that Trelawney's prophecy referred to Harry, as many had read about Sirius Black in the newspapers.
Neville was trembling with worry about his grandmother's safety.
Some of the young wizards were skeptical, believing that Trelawney was just talking nonsense.
Several older students had secretly told them that Professor Trelawney liked to curse one student to death each year, but everyone always ended up fine.
Ivan watched Trelawney with interest. He knew that many of her prophecies in the original timeline had come true, even those made in normal circumstances.
For instance, this time, Trelawney's ominous prophecy, aside from the uncertainty about Neville's grandmother, had all been verified in the original timeline.
Lavender's greatest fear was hearing that her rabbit had died, which indeed happened on October 16th.
The statement about someone leaving around Easter could refer to Hermione.
She had grown tired of Trelawney's nonsense and, with too many courses to study, decided to drop Divination and never returned, thus leaving one person short in the class.
Ivan was curious whether these prophecies would still come true.
If he wanted to, he could easily kill Lavender's rabbit before October 16th, making her hear her most feared news early.
Or, he could cancel Divination with Hermione around Easter, ensuring that two people would leave.
Subsequently, Ivan shook his head with a laugh. He wouldn’t kill a young witch’s pet just to verify the truth of a prediction.
As for whether to drop Divination class, it would depend on whether he could keep the Time Turner next year.
However, Ivan soon realized that there was another way to interpret Trelawney’s prediction. It could also mean that Peter Pettigrew would leave them.
Ivan glanced at Ron’s robes pocket, where the rat was hiding. It seemed that Trelawney’s predictions were indeed quite accurate!
Thinking about this, Ivan became more interested in Divination. He immediately opened the Divination textbook, *Unfogging the Future*, and skimmed through it casually.
The book was filled with all sorts of omens and signs, which made Ivan’s head ache.
From the direction of clouds in the sky to seeing a crow, a Black Dog, or even oddly shaped stones, each had a different meaning.
If he were to interpret things this way, Ivan felt he could find various omens around him every day.
Professor Trelawney quickly instructed everyone to take a teacup from the shelf, work in pairs, and interpret the tea leaves according to the techniques she taught.
Ivan, with a glimmer of hope, tried it out. He brewed a cup of tea, drank it all at once, and gently swirled the cup three times.
Ivan examined the tea leaves at the rim of the cup, but before he could get a good look, Hermione took the cup from him.
“Professor Trelawney said we should look at each other’s!” Hermione rolled her eyes at Ivan, then handed her own cup to him.
Ivan shrugged, not really expecting to see anything significant, and began examining Hermione’s cup.
The tea leaves at the bottom were scattered and unremarkable. Ivan flipped to page five of *Unfogging the Future* and checked. It indicated an unfavorable omen but didn’t provide more details.
“Oh my! This is a terrible omen!”
A voice rang out behind him. Ivan, who had been focused on the book, jumped and turned around to find Sybill Trelawney standing behind him. Trelawney covered her mouth with a look of terror, trembling as she exclaimed, “You will cause a massacre! Blood will flow like in hell!”
All the young wizards turned to look at Ivan with expressions of shock and uncertainty.
Trelawney couldn’t help but take a few steps back, accidentally bumping into a table. Neville’s hand shook, and the teacup he was holding fell to the ground, shattering.
Ivan was quite surprised, unsure if Trelawney was making a genuine prediction.
What did that mean?
You will cause a massacre? Blood will flow like in hell?
Ivan thought about how he had indeed killed many Dark Wizards during the summer, and he might have to kill more in the future. Interpreting it this way, it could be possible.
“Ivan, I think Professor Trelawney is just talking nonsense. She actually believes that shaking a teacup a few times can reveal the future. That’s just too strange,” Hermione said, trying to comfort him once Professor Trelawney moved away.
“Who knows about predictions?” Ivan shook his head, half-jokingly.
“But you were holding my teacup just now!” Hermione rolled her eyes and complained.
