Chapter 293: You Can't Change the Past, Only Fill in a Piece of History!
Chapter 293: You Can't Change the Past, Only Fill in a Piece of History!
Ivan walked through the corridors and staircases, heading towards the top floor of the North Tower. Just as he was about to reach the top, Hermione's voice suddenly interrupted his thoughts.
"Ivan!"
"What's the matter?" Ivan turned his head in surprise and saw Hermione take off the Time Turner hanging around her neck.
The golden chain shimmered in the sunlight. She hesitated for a moment before handing it to him.
Ivan took it, somewhat surprised. "Didn't Professor Dumbledore give it to you to keep? Why are you giving it to me?"
"But sometimes we can be a bit flexible, right? I think the professor just doesn't want us to abuse its power." Hermione stuck out her tongue and continued.
"So we can switch. You can keep it, and I'll be responsible for supervising you!"
Hermione had clearly seen Ivan's reaction in the Headmaster's Office and knew how much he wanted this item.
"But you have to promise me that every time you use the Time Turner, you'll take me with you!" Hermione said earnestly.
The Time Turner was given to them after Professor Mcgonagall had vouched for them to the Ministry of Magic. Hermione didn't want to betray Professor Mcgonagall's trust.
More importantly, Dumbledore had said that misusing the power of time could lead to unpredictable risks.
Hermione didn't know how Ivan planned to use the Time Turner, but since she had promised Professor Dumbledore to supervise Ivan, she was determined to do so.
Ivan looked at the young witch's serious expression and silently shook his head. If I use it secretly, will you even notice?
With that thought, Ivan opened the magic items section in the system to check the Time Turner.
[Magic Item: Time Turner
Magic: Powerful
Effect: Each turn of the dial will rewind time by one hour, with the risk increasing accordingly.
Description: This is a delicate magical artifact with the power to influence time. You must use it with caution.
Note: Time does not increase or decrease! You cannot change the past, only fill in a piece of history!]
You can't change the past, but you can fill in history?
Ivan looked at the Time Turner in his hand, realizing that the power of time was far more wondrous, or perhaps terrifying, than he had imagined!
The note, however, left Ivan somewhat puzzled.
Why say that time does not increase or decrease?
Using the Time Turner could easily add a few hours to each day for studying, or even make a day last two days.
Unless this time refers to the total length of one's lifespan?
Ivan suddenly realized this. If a dying old person used the Time Turner to go back in time, what would happen?
The old person would likely age and die quickly even after going back, so the Time Turner doesn't really add time to a person's life. Instead, it moves future time to the present for use.
Despite this, the magic item was still incredibly powerful. Ivan desperately needed time, even if it meant borrowing from the future.
After a moment of deep thought, Ivan quickly snapped back to reality.
While Ivan was lost in thought, Hermione became somewhat anxious. She thought Ivan was hesitating about her suggestion, not wanting an additional supervisor.
At least let me know when you use the Time Turner, Hermione silently lowered her standards. But she soon felt she was betraying Professor Dumbledore's trust.
Thinking of this, the young witch's cheeks flushed bright red. She immediately made up her mind to hold her ground, puffing out her cheeks and ready to argue with Ivan.
Fortunately, Ivan snapped back to his senses and noticed Hermione's conflicted expression. He guessed her thoughts and, before she could speak, hung the golden chain of the Time Turner back around Hermione's neck.
All the words Hermione had prepared got stuck in her throat, and she was left stunned, as if petrified. She looked at Ivan in surprise, stammering, "You don't want this Time Turner?"
"Keeping it with you is the same thing. You wouldn't refuse me when I need to use it, right?" Ivan shook his head and asked.
Hermione looked down at the golden timepiece, clutched it tightly in both hands, and smiled, nodding solemnly.
"Of course not, whenever you want to use it, just let me know!"
This time, Hermione didn't mention using it correctly.
Trust is mutual.
Hermione knew that Ivan really wanted this item. Now, he had given up the chance to get the Time Turner and returned it to her, which was a significant show of trust.
However, Hermione didn't know that at this moment, Ivan was recalling the scenes in the headmaster's office.
What do you mean, Albus Dumbledore?
If I really intend to do something, Hermione can't stop me.
There is a significant gap in strength between us, and she trusts me so much. If necessary, Ivan could even make Hermione fall asleep without her knowing, rendering Dumbledore's so-called mutual supervision entirely ineffective.
Ivan believed Dumbledore was aware of this as well, so why did he still make this arrangement?
Or is this old wizard waiting to see what choice I will make?
Ivan couldn't guess Dumbledore's thoughts, and it was precisely because of this that he gave up the opportunity to obtain the Time Turner, opting instead to gain Hermione's trust.
After all, his most important task recently was to improve potions, which he didn't need to hide. He had ample reasons to convince Hermione to use the Time Turner openly.
"Ah! We've already wasted so much time. I hope we're not late", Hermione suddenly realized this and said anxiously.
"We have the Time Turner, what's there to worry about?" Ivan shook his head.
"That thing isn't for such trivial matters. We need to go back several times today!" Hermione said irritably, pulling Ivan and running towards the Divination classroom.
About ten minutes later, the two, out of breath, finally arrived at the platform in front of the Divination classroom just before the class started. The place was already crowded, and it seemed they were the last to arrive.
The trapdoor leading to the classroom was already open, and the young witches and wizards were queuing up to climb the ladder into the room.
"Looks like we made it just in time!" Ivan smiled.
Hermione gave him a reproachful glance. If they hadn't run all the way, they would have been late for sure.
"Where were you two just now?" Ron, looking at the two who had run over in a hurry and were out of breath, asked curiously.
"We got lost", Hermione casually replied. She wouldn't mention the Time Turner; they had promised not to tell anyone.
