Chapter 292: Saving Time
Chapter 292: Saving Time
Yu Xuan's curiosity was piqued by what the beasts had said. The story they described seemed to align with the plot he was familiar with, leading him to boldly assume that the characters in the aforementioned tale were the DM characters he knew.
The true identity of the "Seal Vessel" was intriguing. Even if it wasn't the Millennium Puzzle, it might still have had a connection to the Pharaoh.
After the battle in the Dimension of Darkness, it took Kaiba all his effort to retrieve the Millennium Puzzle, only for it to slip away again. One could imagine Kaiba's despair at the time, which led him to venture into the underworld and strive to develop cutting-edge technology across various fields in a desperate attempt to bring back his departed companion.
It could be said that if the Pharaoh hadn't left, the technological advancements of the world would have been set back by at least three decades by today's standards.
With this new lead, there was no way Kaiba would let it slide. All other matters, like Doma's schemes in the Spirit World and the awakening of the Evil God, became secondary. He was determined to acquire this artifact, hence the creation of the Link System.
However, it seemed that Kaiba would have to apologize to the Pharaoh, as Yu Xuan might reach it first.
Yu Xuan remained calm and tried to guide the conversation discreetly, extracting information from the three beasts with concise language.
These three beasts seemed to have similar roles as his current undercover identity. They were a team, awaiting their captain, who was about to come online, to receive their detailed mission instructions, including the time and location of their actions. Only their superiors knew the true purpose of their gathering.
"Hmm, it's boring to just wait here," Beast C said with a shake of his head, his voice deep and resonant. "Why don't we play a game to pass the time?"
Beast C narrowed his eyes.
"The usual rules: the winner can ask the loser any question."
Yu Xuan's thoughts stirred.
This rule was quite beneficial. If he won, it would make asking questions easier. However, he wondered what the game would be.
Nonetheless, he was confident in his current luck power level; even if it wasn't a card game, he believed he could still emerge victorious.
"Alright," Beast A said. "Should we play the same game as last time?"
Yu Xuan raised an eyebrow.
This was bad. He had no idea what game these beasts had played previously. It seemed his undercover persona might be exposed sooner than expected.
"No, let's play something simpler this time," Beast C hummed and hawed. "How about a game of high and low?"
At this suggestion, Beast A's body trembled, his face turning pale as he stumbled back two steps. "How... How did you know my one and only weakness?"
Beast B patted him on the shoulder. "Brother, I think he means comparing the attack strength of our monster cards."
"Huh?" Beast A was taken aback.
"Yeah, we draw cards from our decks and compare the attack strength of the monsters we draw. If it's not a monster, it counts as zero," Beast C explained, giving him a strange look. "What did you think we were comparing?"
"Ahaha... You must have misheard! As the chosen warriors of the gods, we should be comparing the strength of our monsters, right?" Beast A said, waving his hand grandly.
"Let's do it then. Bring it on!"
Beast B remained silent for a moment as he sized up Beast A, glancing up and down with a hint of sympathy in his eyes. "So, brother, this is your weakness. I always wondered why you seemed so insecure whenever you went to the bathroom."
"Insecure? Who's insecure?!?" Beast A exclaimed, anger flashing in his eyes as he reached for his belt.
"I'm not afraid of anyone!"
"Ahem, let's save that game for next time. I'll draw my card now," Beast C said, raising his Duel Disk and revealing his deck. He drew the top card and promptly displayed it.
Beast A also drew a card from his deck and promptly displayed it. "Tch, Centaur, with an attack of 1300? Lucky you."
Beast B drew as well, frowning as he revealed his card. "Darn, Vampire Treebear, 1800. Just a bit short."
"Heh, looks like I win," Beast C said proudly, then turned his gaze to Yu Xuan.
"Alright, time for the deciding draw."
Yu Xuan already had a deck of cards ready.
Although drawing a card with a different art style might expose him, it wasn't a significant concern. Fortunately, he had obtained that godly duelist's deck earlier, and since it was quite powerful, he hadn't sold it all off. Now, it came in handy.
Compared to professional duelists like Judai, his skills were still lacking, but against these opponents, he was confident. Beating these three should be a breeze.
Indeed, Yu Xuan drew a card and smiled as he displayed it.
"Green Baboon, Defender of the Forest, with an attack of 2600," he said nonchalantly as he returned the card to his deck. "Looks like I win."
As he contemplated how to start questioning them, the three beasts suddenly stood up, their faces filled with shock as they stared at him for a moment before quickly exchanging glances.
Then, in a flash, the three beasts acted in unison.
The Bloodaxe Hatchetman, Centaur, and Vampire Treebear that they had drawn were summoned and materialized, rushing aggressively toward Yu Xuan.
Yu Xuan furrowed his brows slightly.
The next moment, a white light barrier appeared beneath his feet. A sacred, translucent magic circle acted as an invisible shield, repelling the three monsters. The silver-haired, white-robed magician spun out of the formation, his staff sweeping forward to send the three beasts flying back instantly.
Yu Xuan stood up slowly, the magical effects rippling across his body, and the ugly, blood-red figure returned to his original appearance.
"Spy!"
"Impostor!"
"Human duelist!"
The three beasts shouted, commanding their monsters to charge again.
The Bloodaxe Hatchetman was the fastest, its powerful axe chopping down with force. But Silent Magician moved with agility, dodging the blow as his staff lightly tapped the beast's wrist.
The Hatchetman stumbled, its grip on the axe loosening as it took a step back. Silent Magician's staff tipped upwards, a beam of white light pouring out and exploding into a sphere of light that blasted the monster, shattering it into pieces.
The Centaur and Treebear tried to flank Silent Magician, taking advantage of their teammate's sacrifice to go for the enemy leader. However, Yu Xuan stood his ground, unmoving.
Before the three beasts could react, they felt a domineering sword aura surge forth. The two materialized monsters fell backward, exploding into nothingness.
As the smoke cleared, Yu Xuan remained standing in the same spot, as if he hadn't done anything at all.
"How did I get exposed?" he asked casually.
Realizing that their opponent was not someone to be trifled with, the three beasts temporarily halted their attacks, maintaining a cautious distance.
"That guy is the weakest among us," Beast C said in a low voice. "If it were really him, he wouldn't have drawn the card with the highest attack."
Yu Xuan: "..."
Is that how it is?
So, I was exposed because my card-drawing skills are too good?
Oh well, no matter. Time for Plan B.
"Alright, you've caught me. Now, let's cut to the chase."
He activated his Duel Disk and swept his gaze over the three beasts.
"Let's save time. The three of you, come at me together."
