Chapter 290: Course Selection
Chapter 290: Course Selection
The Great Hall was silent, and many of the young wizards were frightened by Dumbledore's serious expression. Only in times of emergency would the Bearded Headmaster display such a demeanor.
Perhaps noticing that his tone was a bit too heavy, Dumbledore's brow relaxed, and he faintly smiled as he continued speaking.
"Alright, that's all the reminders. Let's move on to a more pleasant topic. This year, we have two new professors joining our faculty!"
"First, we have Professor Lupin, who has kindly agreed to fill the vacancy in Defense Against the Dark Arts." Dumbledore moved aside slightly, gesturing for everyone to look at the faculty table, and led the applause.
Lupin nodded to the crowd, though he wasn't as enthusiastic about taking on this "dangerous" position as Dumbledore made it sound.
The Great Hall erupted in scattered applause, and the young wizards scrutinized Lupin. His shabby appearance contrasted sharply with the well-dressed professors, making it hard for many to believe he was a capable individual.
After the students had absorbed the first piece of news, Dumbledore continued.
"And our second new professor is Rubeus Hagrid!"
Hagrid stood up suddenly, his massive body pushing the long table several inches forward.
Noticing everyone's gaze, Hagrid's cheeks turned red, and his rough hands fidgeted on the table, unsure where to place them.
Dumbledore added, "Our former Care of Magical Creatures professor, Professor Kettleburn, retired at the end of last semester. Therefore, I have hired Rubeus Hagrid to take over this position. He has agreed to accept this role in addition to his duties as Gamekeeper!"
Many young wizards stared at Hagrid in the faculty area, finding it hard to believe. Even Harry and Ron were surprised, but they didn't let that stop them from giving him a warm round of applause.
Ivan also clapped, knowing that the Chamber of Secrets incident last semester had cleared Hagrid of any suspicion, giving him the opportunity to become a professor.
It was quite a coincidence that Professor Kettleburn had retired at the end of the term, leading Ivan to suspect that Dumbledore might have had a hand in it.
After listening to Dumbledore's lengthy speech, it was finally time to enjoy the dinner.
The old headmaster waved his Wand lightly, and the next moment, golden platters filled with delicious food appeared on the long tables of the four houses, and empty goblets were filled with various beverages.
The young wizards, who had been waiting eagerly, began to feast, discussing the two new professors and the purpose of the Dementors at Hogwarts in small groups.
When dinner ended, the prefects led the first-year students to their respective common rooms, while the third-year students remained behind. Professor Mcgonagall handed out a list to each of them.
Ivan took the list and saw that it was the third-year schedule.
In addition to the main courses from the previous year, there were several elective courses, such as Divination, Ancient Runes, and Muggle Studies.
Before leaving, Professor Mcgonagall reminded everyone to think carefully about their choices tonight. They only had one night to decide, as she would collect the schedules the next morning!
"Looks like we're going to be busy this school year again." Ron stared at the timetable, unable to help complaining.
For Ron, who was always average in his grades, adding a few more courses meant more torture at the end of the term.
Harry also agreed, and the two of them started to consider which courses would be relatively easier.
First, Hagrid's Care of Magical Creatures class was a must, and with their relationship with Hagrid, getting a high score in this class was not a problem.
The remaining courses were more difficult to choose from. Harry was more inclined to take Muggle Studies, as he had grown up in the Muggle world. Ron, on the other hand, wanted to take Divination.
After discussing for a while, they turned to ask Ivan for his opinion, but to their surprise, Ivan had already started ticking off courses on the timetable.
"Ivan, did you decide that quickly?" Ron asked in surprise.
"Decide? Why not tick them all? Professor Mcgonagall didn't say we couldn't choose all of them." Ivan shook his head and said casually.
Harry and Ron looked at Ivan's timetable, wanting to say something but held back.
Professor Mcgonagall had only suggested that each student choose two to three courses and didn't say they couldn't choose all of them, but normally, no one would do that, right?
The two of them looked at Ivan with strange expressions, thinking that he might be the only one in the entire year to do this.
Just as they were thinking this, Hermione's voice sounded from behind them.
"Ivan is right! There's no harm in taking more courses!"
Harry and Ron turned around to see Hermione holding a timetable, ticking off courses as well, apparently planning to take all of them like Ivan.
The two of them were speechless, even feeling a bit ashamed and wondering if they should also choose more courses. But the thought only lasted a moment before they dismissed it.
School life is so beautiful; how could our minds only be focused on studying?
That would be such a buzzkill!
"Right, you've chosen so many courses, there must be some overlapping class times. What are you going to do then?" Harry asked curiously.
Hermione was taken aback and also realized this problem. After a moment of contemplation, she was about to speak when she heard Ivan say,
"I'm sure the professors will have a solution!"
"Right! Otherwise, Professor Mcgonagall would have warned us!" Hermione nodded, glancing at Ivan with a hint of happiness that he thought the same as her.
Harry and Ron looked at the two of them with a mix of exasperation and amusement, then glanced down at the timetable again. In the end, although they didn't tick all the courses like Ivan, they gritted their teeth and chose three elective courses.
After making the difficult course selection, Ivan and the others, who were already exhausted from the long day, returned to the dormitory together. They hurriedly washed up and, as soon as they hit their beds, they fell into a deep sleep.
Ivan lay in bed, thinking about the Time Turner he was about to receive.
In the original timeline, it seemed Professor Mcgonagall had proactively applied for one for Hermione. He wondered if Professor Mcgonagall would also apply for one for him.
If not, he would have to ask Lupin to vouch for him.
