Chapter 29: The Suspicious Life of a Spellcraft Professor
Chapter 29: The Suspicious Life of a Spellcraft Professor
Ryan was doing slightly better, having transitioned from a faulty connection to a flashing mode, and the frequency was decreasing as well, indicating he was close to success.
However, Michael's situation was not as fortunate. The light on his wand was extremely unstable, blindingly bright at its peak like a spotlight, and barely brighter than a firefly at its weakest, seemingly on the verge of extinguishing at any moment.
The more this happened, the more anxious Michael became, and the more anxious he was, the less control he had, creating a vicious cycle.
"Um, you..."
Kyle wanted to help him, but as soon as he opened his mouth, he saw Michael suddenly take a deep breath, then lift his wand-holding hand upwards.
Without warning, Kyle felt a sudden sense of foreboding, as if something terrible was about to happen.
This feeling came so suddenly that Kyle didn't have time to think; he instinctively turned, lowered his head, and closed his eyes.
Almost simultaneously, a blinding flash of light, like an exploding flashbang, instantly engulfed the entire Spellcraft classroom.
Although this sudden burst of light disappeared after a second, its impact was catastrophic.
Many young wizards, unprepared, were blinded by the sudden flash. The next moment, cries of anguish echoed from all directions as the young wizards covered their eyes, screamed, and pushed each other, trying to escape the place. The classroom was in chaos.
Even Professor Flitwick was affected, but being a seasoned professor who had weathered many storms, he wasn't as panicked as the young wizards. He endured the discomfort while soothing everyone in a high-pitched voice.
"It's alright, everyone. Don't panic. Stay calm, and in a while, you'll be able to see again."
Professor Flitwick had tried his best, but to little avail. The classroom remained chaotic.
To an outsider, it might seem like Voldemort had invaded Hogwarts.
Moreover, he was facing the wrong direction, and throughout the entire process, he was addressing the young wizards behind him, facing the wall.
The four wizards in the painting found this extremely annoying. Although they were startled as well, paintings were not living beings and wouldn't be affected by the aftermath.
In their eyes, Professor Flitwick's behavior at this moment was as foolish as a Teapot Troll with a damaged head.
...
In the Spellcraft classroom, only Kyle, who had avoided the risk in advance, and a few lucky ones remained unaffected.
However, they didn't have any other options either. They could only try to comfort their companions and help the fallen young wizards to their feet to prevent a stampede.
It wasn't until several minutes later that the aftereffects of the intense light slowly subsided, and the young wizards gradually regained their vision.
"Oh, Merlin's beard, this is a disaster."
Professor Flitwick rubbed his eyes and shakily descended from behind the teacher's desk.
He had intended to come down to soothe the young wizards, but because he didn't notice the reversed direction, he stepped into empty air and fell.
Professor Flitwick was furious.
With decades of experience, he had encountered numerous unexpected situations, from spells hitting people to levitation charms summoning cows, and lock-breaking spells blowing up locks. He had seen it all and wasn't surprised.
After all, these were within his expectations... New students were bound to have mishaps due to their inexperience with magic.
However, he never imagined that even a seemingly safe spell like the lighting charm could go awry.
Professor Flitwick, along with all the young wizards, filled with indignation and anticipation, made their way to the culprit.
Michael lay motionless on the desk, and Professor Flitwick called out to him several times, but there was no response, and he remained peacefully lying there.
Professor Flitwick also noticed something was amiss and quickly came to Michael's side to examine him, soon reaching a conclusion.
"He's still alive, probably unconscious due to magical exhaustion..."
Hearing this, Kyle let out a sigh of relief.
Magical exhaustion here didn't mean his mana bar was empty; it meant he had no energy left, similar to a Muggle staying awake for two days and nights straight.
...
Professor Flitwick's gaze was somewhat scattered.
Magical exhaustion? Just from a Light Spell?
Within a few short minutes, this was the second time he had doubted himself. He even began to wonder if he had become out of touch after spending too much time at Hogwarts.
Throughout the thousands of years of magical history, he had never heard of anyone fainting from casting a simple Light Spell.
"Professor, should I take him to Madam Pomfrey first?"
Seeing Professor Flitwick standing there in a daze, Kyle tentatively suggested, "He can't just stay like this. It's better to get him checked."
"Yes...yes, he needs to be checked. Take him there quickly."
...
After getting Professor Flitwick's permission, Kyle quickly used a Levitation Charm on Michael and then left the classroom with him.
Given Professor Flitwick's personality, he would have given extra points for this scene. However, right now...not getting deducted points was already a blessing; there was no need to ask for more.
...
Not long after leaving the classroom, Kyle saw a cat sitting at the corner, not a cat girl, but a real cat, with two amber eyes staring at him intently.
"Lady Lore? Perfect."
Kyle quickly said, "A young wizard is injured. I need to go to Madam Pomfrey, but I don't know the way. Can you help guide me?"
Although Cedric's map marked the location of the hospital wing, he had never been there and wasn't familiar with the route.
But this cat was different. It had been with Filch for a long time and knew Hogwarts very well. It definitely knew the fastest way to get there.
It would be great if it agreed to help.
Lady Lore tilted her head to look at Kyle and the floating Michael behind him, then without a word, she stood up and walked towards the stairs on the right.
Was this her agreement? Kyle quickly followed.
The two of them, along with the cat, weaved through various staircases, and at one point, they took a shortcut through a secret passage hidden behind a statue, making their journey even faster. In just a few minutes, they reached a courtyard outside the Great Hall.
Here, a massive grandfather clock stood, earning the courtyard the name of Grand Clock Courtyard.
When Kyle arrived, Lady Lore was sitting beside the clock, and with her tail, she pointed towards the stairs behind her, indicating for him to go up.
"Thank you. I appreciate it," Kyle said, reaching out to pat Lady Lore's cat head, but she nimbly dodged his hand.
Lady Lore folded her ears back and glared at Kyle with a warning look before turning and walking away, soon disappearing from sight.
"Hmph, so tsundere," Kyle sighed, reluctantly retracting his hand and continuing up the stairs with Michael floating behind him.
This staircase led directly to the hospital wing, and it was a fixed route, so there was no worry of it changing directions midway.
