Chapter 29: The Red Light Spirit Beast
When Lu Qing heard the familiar scratching at the door, he nearly couldn’t believe his ears.
Chen Laodaifu had said his medicinal powder was incredibly effective—so potent that even a pack of wolves would retreat in fear upon smelling it. Then why was this thing still here?
Lu Qing felt utterly defeated.
Was he really going to be stuck awake again tonight? This wasn’t sustainable. If he didn’t resolve this matter soon, he’d never get a good night’s sleep again.
After two sleepless nights, his patience had worn thin. His temper was starting to fray.
He decided he’d finally find out what exactly was making such a nuisance of itself.
Quietly, Lu Qing crept toward the door, holding a stick by his bedside. Then, in one swift motion, he yanked the bolt aside and flung the door open.
The sudden movement clearly startled whatever was outside.
A dark blur shot across the courtyard in an instant and vanished into the night.
Ever since awakening his Abilities, Lu Qing’s eyes had undergone subtle but noticeable changes.
First, his vision had sharpened—now he could see clearly even objects far away.
Second, his sensitivity to light had increased dramatically. Though he still couldn’t see in total darkness, just a faint glow was enough for him to make out shapes and details with remarkable clarity.
Now, under the bright moonlight, Lu Qing finally saw what had been haunting him for two nights.
It was a small, black creature.
About two feet long, its body resembled a mix of cat and leopard, with enormous eyes like tiny lightbulbs.
Right now, its fur was puffed up, its tail stiff, limbs crouched low—its entire body bristling with fear, staring warily at Lu Qing.
Seeing it up close, Lu Qing let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.
Good. It wasn’t large, and it didn’t look particularly dangerous.
After all, the creature had been scared off by a single door slam last night—hardly a bold or fierce animal.
To his surprise, this time the little beast didn’t flee. It stayed low to the ground, eyes fixed on him, trembling but still there.
Lu Qing remained perfectly still, not making a move. He wanted to assess the creature first—use his Abilities to gather information before deciding what to do.
Keeping his expression calm, he focused his gaze on the small beast.
But then his eyes widened in shock.
A faint red glow began to emanate from the creature’s body.
【Nighttime Spirit Fox: Mountain Spirit Beast, juvenile, female.】
【Extremely fast, claws sharp enough to shatter stone and split metal.】
【Legend says it adores fish—but is born with an innate aversion to water, forced to watch fish swim by, helpless.】
A Red Light Level beast?!
Lu Qing nearly jumped out of his skin.
The glowing aura radiating from the creature was unmistakably Red Light Level—on par with Chen Laodaifu himself.
No wonder the medicinal powder had done nothing.
He took several deep breaths, forcing himself to calm down.
A wave of relief washed over him.
Thank goodness he hadn’t acted rashly.
He hadn’t realized this little creature was such a powerful spirit beast.
And the description… speed so fast it’s almost invisible, claws capable of splitting rock and metal?
That kind of power surpassed even tigers and leopards.
The only reason he was still standing was because this creature was timid.
If it had been provoked, he might have already been dead.
Carefully, he tucked the stick behind his back and offered a harmless, friendly smile.
“Little guy… did you come here for fish?”
The black beast stared at him, unblinking, clearly not understanding a word.
Lu Qing didn’t expect it to. He slowly, deliberately, stepped forward—moving with care not to startle it—and quickly returned from the kitchen with two dried fish slices.
When he stepped back into the doorway, he saw the creature’s eyes flicker—just slightly, but unmistakably—brightening like tiny lamps.
So it was here for fish.
Recalling the third line of the description, Lu Qing held the fish up and waved it gently.
“Sorry about scaring you earlier. These two fish are my apology.”
The creature’s eyes followed the movement of the fish, wide and unblinking.
Lu Qing nodded to himself.
“Here you go.”
He tossed the fish into the yard—carefully, deliberately, landing it well away from the beast, to avoid triggering panic.
The fish hit the ground. The little creature flinched, darting back a few steps, eyes locked on Lu Qing.
But Lu Qing didn’t move. He stayed still, silent.
After a moment, the creature seemed to sense that he meant no harm.
Its fur began to settle. It sniffed the air, ears twitching.
Then—without warning—a black streak shot forward.
In the blink of an eye, the fish was gone.
The creature vanished over the fence, disappearing into the misty night.
Lu Qing waited a few more moments, confirming the beast had truly left.
Only then did he close the door and return to his room.
Once in bed, his heart refused to slow down.
It had been too close.
The creature might look timid, but who knew what it would do if truly provoked?
As the old saying went: even a cornered rabbit will bite.
And this wasn’t a rabbit—it was a spirit beast with the power to rip through stone and metal.
If it had attacked, he wouldn’t have stood a chance.
But fortunately, the little beast was both fearful and non-aggressive.
Otherwise, Lu Qing doubted he’d have survived the night.
“Why has no one in the village ever mentioned a creature like this?” he wondered aloud, once his heartbeat had steadied.
Then he remembered the description again.
It was still a juvenile.
Could its parents be nearby?
Unlikely. If they were, they’d have come to reclaim it by now.
Or perhaps… it had been driven away from its family, or its parents had met with misfortune.
Lu Qing ran through a few possibilities—but none felt quite right.
Still, one thing was certain: he had a strong feeling this little creature would return.
No evidence. No logic. Just a quiet, unshakable instinct.
“So I guess fishing can’t be put on hold after all,” he sighed, resigned.
He’d planned to set aside fishing for now, dedicating himself fully to mastering his Medical Skills.
Once Chen Laodaifu sold the Red Moon Carp, they’d receive a substantial sum—enough to live comfortably for quite some time.
But now, with a Red Light Level spirit beast haunting his doorstep, that plan was out of the question.
This wasn’t someone he could confront. He had no choice but to keep it calm—keep it fed.
“Just what kind of trouble have I gotten myself into?” Lu Qing groaned.
