Chapter 29: Su Nan's Strength Is Blackstone City's Strength
Chapter 29: Su Nan's Strength Is Blackstone City's Strength
The city of Blackstone had already taken on a somber atmosphere by the end of October. Although the first snow was still a ways off, the air had grown cold, far removed from the sweltering heat of the Harvest Moon. Four armored men walked along the inner courtyard of the castle, their breath forming faint white mists in the chilly air.
The three younger men trailing behind were visibly excited and eager, as if something wonderful was about to happen. After a while, one of them couldn't hold back his curiosity and asked the man in the lead, Jodan, "Sir Jodan, is there anything we need to be cautious about when taking the Lesser Dragon Blood Potion?"
Jodan glanced back at the young man and waved his hand dismissively. "Look at you, all nervous. Dozens of others have taken the potion before you, and none of them had any issues. You can relax."
The young man scratched his head, embarrassed. "I'm not worried, just really excited. After all, with that potion, I'll finally become a knight!"
The other two nodded eagerly, their faces alight with excitement.
After all, they were about to become knights—the elite warriors of the battlefield, the future of the nobility! They had trained for years, dreaming of the day they would earn their knighthood and bring honor to their families. They never imagined this dream would come true so soon.
It still felt like a dream to them.
"Ha, I understand your feelings. A year ago, I wouldn't have believed there was a potion that could turn an apprentice knight into a full knight. We owe it all to Lord Su Nan!"
When Jodan mentioned Su Nan, his tone was filled with reverence. The three young men also wore expressions of awe and admiration.
Although information about Lord Su Nan was strictly controlled within Blackstone, everyone who had taken or was about to take the Lesser Dragon Blood Potion knew that the city's current prosperity was largely due to his efforts. Even the formation of the Black Rock Cavalry Regiment could be attributed to Su Nan's initiative.
In the hearts of the city's knights and apprentice knights, Su Nan's status was on par with that of the lord himself.
"You don't need to be too nervous. When you meet the lord, take the potion, and you'll be fine," Jodan reassured them. But before he could finish, a chill ran down his spine, as if something had just brushed past him, making his skin prickle.
He stopped and looked around, but saw nothing out of the ordinary.
"Did any of you see anything?" Jodan asked the three men.
They shook their heads, looking confused.
"Damn, maybe I drank too much last night and my head isn't clear yet," Jodan muttered, rubbing his temples. He quickly dismissed the incident and continued leading the way.
They soon arrived at the training ground. From a distance, Jodan saw the lord and Brad standing at the entrance, deep in discussion. Nearby, three large wooden barrels were placed.
As they got closer, Jodan could see that the barrels contained a light red liquid. He could also detect a familiar, pungent smell.
It was the scent of the Lesser Dragon Blood Potion!
"Are these all Lesser Dragon Blood Potions?"
Jodan was taken aback, but quickly realized that the smell was faint, suggesting the liquid was diluted.
"Move the barrels to the barracks. Every warrior who has reached the squire level should drink a bowl each day, and officers should have an extra bowl."
Seeing Jodan approach with the others, Kui gave a brief instruction to Brad and waved him away. He then turned his attention to Jodan and the three young men, his gaze lingering on the trio.
"Lord!"
The three young men bowed in unison.
Kui nodded solemnly and turned to Jodan.
"Only three this time?"
Jodan nodded. "The rest are still recent breakthroughs. Sir Su Nan said it's best to wait until they stabilize their strength before taking the potion."
Hearing that it was Su Nan's advice, Kui said no more and took out three vials of the Lesser Dragon Blood Potion.
The process was straightforward. The three young men took the potion on the spot.
Two of them immediately broke through to the knight level, while the third, though not breaking through immediately, was expected to do so after a few days of practice, based on past experience.
Kui offered a few words of encouragement to the new (and soon-to-be) knights, then gestured for Jodan to take them away. He left the training ground and headed toward the main building.
Since the defeat of the Blackscale Lizards, Blackstone City had entered a period of rapid development.
The number of knights had surged.
Now, Blackstone City had over a hundred knights in total.
Across the entire Starlight Principality, only the territories of viscounts and above, after centuries of development and lineage, could boast such a number of knights!
The idea that a single city could match the knight count of a viscount's territory would leave many jaws dropping.
"Unfortunately, the blood from the Blackscale Lizards is all used up. From now on, we'll have to slowly extract blood from the captives, and the production of the potion will slow down significantly."
"But that's not a bad thing. We've been using too much of the Lesser Dragon Blood Potion lately, and there's a shortage of apprentice knights in the army. This is a good time to train more of them."
Kui thought of the new dragon blood potion Su Nan had recently developed.
Its effects far surpassed those of the Lesser Dragon Blood Potion. Just four vials had allowed him to cross the threshold that countless knights dream of, reaching the Great Knight level. It was truly miraculous!
The only downside was the limited production.
So far, only Kui and a few other senior knights like Brad had taken the potion, allowing them to reach the peak knight level.
"Unfortunately, Blackstone City lacks time. If I had a few years, retaking the Shining Fief would be a breeze."
As he pondered, Kui suddenly saw the butler, old Gailor, leading a group of servants carrying several skinned sheep.
Old Gailor quickly noticed Kui and stopped to bow.
"Lord."
Kui nodded and pointed to the sheep. "Where are these being taken?"
Old Gailor replied, "To Sir Su Nan's courtyard."
Kui quickly remembered that Su Nan had a giant lizard in his courtyard, captured from the Blackscale Lizard tribe, which ate a lot of meat every day.
However, he noticed something odd as he looked at the three sheep.
Had the lizard's appetite increased significantly?
He had just heard from Jodan that it seemed to need only one sheep per day.
Curiosity piqued, Kui didn't press further, simply waving for old Gailor and the others to leave.
Most things related to wizards were shrouded in mystery and strangeness, making it hard for outsiders to understand.
He had no interest in delving deeper; all he needed to do was continue supporting Su Nan.
After all, Su Nan's strength was Blackstone City's strength!
