Chapter 29: Professional Examiners Won't Get Angry
Chapter 29: Professional Examiners Won't Get Angry
Upon entering the examination hall, You Xuan surveyed the audience gallery and soon spotted several familiar faces.
There was Kaizar Maru Toby, a fellow observer from the Duel Academy, perched on a high platform, and the female lead from GX with the highest number of appearances, Tenjoin Asuka, who had been constantly by his side during the early stages.
Seated nearby in the audience section were Manjyome Jun, already clad in his Obelisk Blue uniform, and his underlings.
Manjyome and Asuka were both on a fast-track program; they had been top students in the middle school section of the Duel Academy. Only those with such exceptional backgrounds could be directly promoted to the highest level, the Obelisk Blue dormitory, upon enrollment.
Other examinees who gained entry through the entrance examination, even with perfect scores across the board, would only be allocated to Ra Yellow. That was why, in the anime, despite entering with top marks, Mizawa was only placed in Ra Yellow. Only with subsequent outstanding performance and good conduct would there be an opportunity to advance to Obelisk Blue.
You Xuan scanned the area, and although it was already past the examination time, he didn't spot a certain familiar jellyfish-haired individual.
Unless something unexpected happened, Todou's train was probably delayed today. At this moment, he should be on his way, having bumped into Mutou Yugi and received a Winged Kuriboh card from him—Todou's first monster card in the main story, which would safeguard him through his various dark duels in the early stages.
If you only consider the GX story, there is no explanation for why Yugi would randomly select a lucky jellyfish-haired individual to gift a monster card at the beginning.
However, if you take into account the later movie, "Bond Beyond Time," it's possible to speculate that Yugi had encountered Todou, who traveled back from the future, many years ago. Thus, in the present, Yugi already considered Todou a comrade-in-arms whom he had never met before.
"Examinee number 001, Fujiki You Xuan."
Finally, it was his turn.
You Xuan stood up and made his way to the dueling arena.
While observing from the platform earlier, he had noticed that today's examiners were using several examination-specific decks in rotation. Different examinees took turns dueling with those few decks, and he had already figured out their strategies.
There was nothing he couldn't handle.
A minute ago, Manjyome Jun and his two underlings were sitting casually on the stands.
"According to the grouping, it should be this year's number 001 coming up next," said Underling A. "I wonder who the top student is this year."
Underling B scoffed, "Whoever it is doesn't matter. This year's freshman king is already decided, and it's our boss, Manjyome."
Manjyome's lips curved up, and he let out a cold laugh.
"There can only be one ruler in the academy. As they say, a mountain cannot accommodate two tigers. However, if that guy is good enough, he might make a decent opponent to pass the time. After all, if I dominate too easily, these three years in the academy will be dreadfully boring," he added with a snort.
"You're right, boss. Hahaha!"
The trio laughed together.
Then they heard the voice announcement.
"Examinee number 001, Fujiki You Xuan, please proceed to Arena 1 for your examination."
The laughter abruptly stopped.
Underling A exclaimed, "What? That name... Could it be..."
Underling B: "Boss!"
They turned to look at Manjyome, but he was nowhere to be seen.
"Hey, boss? How did you end up under the chair?"
Ignoring the slight pain from the fall, Manjyome crawled out from under the chair, his eyes wide as he stared fixedly at Arena 1.
And there, he saw a familiar silhouette entering the field.
The academy's tyrant, Manjyome, had his ambitions crushed before they could even take flight. Even before enrollment, his dream of ruling the academy had turned into a bubble, replaced by the fear of being dominated by the underworld.
Why is it you again?!
"Good day, teacher."
You Xuan greeted the examiner politely as he took his position in the arena.
The examiner, a stern-looking man with sunglasses, replied without a smile, "Let's begin the duel."
"Yes, teacher."
You Xuan set up his dueling disk but paused just before the duel started, a slight frown creasing his brow as he thought of something.
"Wait a moment, teacher. Just a hypothetical question: what if I win, but during the duel, you become displeased or dissatisfied with my performance? Is there a possibility that you might still fail me?"
"I see." You Xuan breathed a sigh of relief.
He remembered Professor Chronos, the man nicknamed 'Greedy Sprite' due to his striking resemblance to the card illustration on the 'Pot of Greed'.
While the professor seemed like a villain in the early parts of the anime, he only targeted failing students. For outstanding students like Mizawa, who once hit a home run that sent a baseball straight into the professor's eye, he would just laugh it off and say, "It's fine, it's fine. As long as you keep up your grades, I'm happy."
You Xuan figured that since he was first in the written test, Professor Greedy Sprite probably wouldn't give him a hard time.
"Duel!" x2
You Xuan: LP 4000
Examiner: LP 4000
"I'll take the first turn and draw." You Xuan said as he drew three cards.
"I'll set one monster in the front row and two face-down cards in the back row. End turn."
Up in the stands, Manjome Jun suffocated as he watched this opening hand.
That familiar scent, that aura from the underworld...
"My turn, draw!" The examiner declared, "I'll normally summon 'Gene Wolfman' in attack mode."
Gene Wolfman: ATK 2000
As soon as the card was played, You Xuan recognized which of the exam decks this was.
It was the aggressive four-star deck, mostly consisting of four-star monsters with over 2000 attack points. Combined with equipment cards, it could easily achieve a field-controlling 2000-3000 attack power. This was one of the more troublesome decks for newcomers to face in the entrance exam.
From the audience, a student commented, "Oh, look over there. Number one has drawn the aggressive suppression deck."
"Yeah, I'm glad I didn't get that one. What a unlucky guy."
Manjome, however, remained silent, his hands clenched into fists.
Unlucky? No, no, no.
It was the examiner who was unlucky.
To draw the aggressive deck and face this kind of monster—now that was a streak of bad luck that spanned eight lifetimes.
"Attack with 'Gene Wolfman'!"
The face-down card was flipped, revealing an old magician with a green staff.
Stubborn Old Magician: DEF 600
"Stubborn Old Magician's effect activates," You Xuan said. "When this card is flipped face-up, I can select and destroy one monster on your field. I choose your 'Gene Wolfman'."
As the old magician was about to perish, he fired off a magic bullet, causing Gene Wolfman to explode with a deafening blast.
Gene Wolfman didn't even last ten seconds before being destroyed, but this was still within the realm of a normal duel. The examiner had not yet realized something was amiss.
"So it's a flip-destroy monster, huh? Then, the battle phase ends."
The examiner drew a card and inserted it into his Duel Disk.
"I activate the magic card 'Call of the Haunted'! When a monster is destroyed this turn, it can be Special Summoned in Attack Position during my next turn." (Anime effect)
The magic effect activated, and a vortex to the underworld opened. After a flash of golden light, a battered and bruised Gene Wolfman returned to the field.
"I activate a face-down card, the trap card 'Magical Deal'!"
You Xuan pressed a button on his Duel Disk and flipped over one of his face-down cards.
"When your opponent activates a magic card, you can pay 1000 Life Points to randomly discard one card from their hand."
You Xuan: LP 4000 → LP 3000
"What?!"
The examiner was taken aback, and when he looked down at his hand, one of his cards had vanished in a flash of golden light.
"It doesn't end there," You Xuan continued. "Chain activation of the trap card 'Torrential Tribute'!" He waved his hand, flipping over another face-down card. "When a monster is summoned, special summoned, or flipped into a face-up attack position, destroy all monsters on the field!"
A flood roared out from the cards, sweeping across the field in a mighty torrent. The hapless Gene Wolfman, who had barely regained his footing, was once again pulled into the vortex and pulverized.
Examiner: "..."
