Chapter 29: Fierce
Chapter 29: Fierce
"Hmph, in these times, what's the point of distinguishing between official patrols and thugs? They're all just lackeys of the powerful."
A cold laugh echoed among the crowd of ruffians, followed by a chaotic clatter. In the sunlight, one could see flashing objects flying through the air, accompanied by a shower of white quicklime pouring down from the walls on both sides of the alley.
Chen Mu remained calm and collected. He let out a fierce shout and, with a swift motion, tore off the long robe he was wearing. Then, with the 'Gale Force', he vigorously waved and wrapped the robe around, capturing a large amount of quicklime along with the shining darts and hidden weapons, creating a chaotic mess.
The sharp and piercing hidden weapons, despite being caught in the robe's whirlwind, still managed to pierce through in a few places, leaving small tears in the garment and landing on Chen Mu's body. However, most of their force had been dissipated, causing them to bounce off harmlessly.
Without hesitation, Chen Mu lifted and wrapped the robe with a swift motion, and in an instant, his entire body disappeared beneath it, transforming into a fierce shadow that charged forward and violently crashed into the crowd of ruffians!
The alley was narrow.
If he had been continuously drenched in quicklime and bombarded with various thrown objects, even with three heads and six arms, he wouldn't have been able to catch them all. A martial artist may possess the strength to fight ten opponents, but only under normal circumstances. If caught off guard by a treacherous ambush, even a seven-year-old child wielding a poisoned blade could take the life of a skilled swordsman!
Chen Mu charged into the crowd, slashing with his sword. Wherever the blade passed, several people fell to the ground, wounded. Although the situation seemed more dire, with sticks and blades attacking from all directions, compared to the quicklime and thrown objects, close-quarters combat allowed him to evade these threats.
At the same time, Chen Mu secretly rejoiced in his heart. Fortunately, he had already mastered the Skin Tempering technique to a small degree, so the quicklime and hidden weapons he wrapped and bundled up were rendered mostly ineffective.
Otherwise, if he had faced several rounds of ambushes in quick succession and had to respond hastily, he might have suffered injuries. If his eyes were blinded or his vital points struck, the consequences would be unimaginable.
"Kill!"
Chen Mu, having charged into the crowd, held a patrol saber in his hand. Like a tiger among sheep, he slaughtered indiscriminately, and in an instant, four or five bandits were killed on the spot.
With his perfected blade aura and the Skin Tempering technique at a small degree, Chen Mu was like a tiger with wings. His physique and speed had improved significantly compared to before, allowing him to unleash the full power of his blade aura. His strength had increased far beyond what it was before.
If he hadn't mastered the Skin Tempering technique and relied solely on his blade aura, he might have indeed been surrounded and killed in an ambush, especially with the addition of quicklime and other underhanded tactics. However, with these unskilled thugs, the idea of killing him was nothing but a fantasy!
In just a moment,
Chen Mu stood amidst seven or eight corpses of ruffians, with over ten others injured and retreating, wailing in pain. Some of the ruffians looking at Chen Mu had expressions of shock in their eyes.
Although he was young and lacked an intimidating appearance, but at this moment, covered in blood with a cold gaze, he stood amidst the fallen bodies, exuding a powerful sense of oppression.
"Don't be afraid of him, he's just one man!"
A ruffian in the crowd roared.
Immediately, someone nearby picked up various objects and threw them at Chen Mu, including quicklime powder, bricks, and daggers, disregarding the potential harm to their own people.
Chen Mu reacted swiftly. Facing the incoming quicklime, bricks, and daggers, he quickly bent down and charged forward, sword in hand, colliding with a ruffian. The quicklime powder splattered onto the ruffian's back and Chen Mu's.
"Where did these thugs come from? So brutal..."
Chen Mu, having avoided the threat, frowned slightly.
Usually, after a gang member or a ruffian experienced a few rounds of fighting and witnessed the deaths of several of their companions, they would lose their fighting spirit and retreat. However, the people before him not only didn't retreat but intensified their attacks, even at the risk of harming their own people, just to spread quicklime among the crowd. Their ferocity was appalling, and Chen Mu rarely encountered such ruthless thugs during his patrols.
Chen Mu had no interest in fighting these people to the death. He quickly spotted a direction and charged forward, slashing his sword through five or six people, determined to break through the encirclement and burst out of the alley. However, just as he hacked his way through the crowd, a large amount of quicklime was poured and scattered, causing a white mist to engulf the entire alley ahead.
The scene became even more chaotic, and some of the thugs accidentally inhaled the quicklime, immediately letting out painful cries. Despite this, they remained relentless, still brandishing their sharp weapons towards Chen Mu.
Chen Mu had no choice but to hold his breath and even close his eyes, leaning against the wall. He unleashed his Blazing Wind Blade Technique, swinging his patrol saber up and down like a thousand winds howling, slashing and killing the nearby thugs.
"I must break through!" Chen Mu thought, determined to hold his breath and charge through the quicklime ahead. With such chaos, he couldn't afford to take the blades and weapons lightly; he didn't want to end up in a tragic accident.
Just as Chen Mu prepared to take a deep breath and charge forward...
A voice filled with fury drowned out the thugs' screams.
"How dare you!"
Upon hearing this voice, Chen Mu's heart skipped a beat. He wielded his saber, swinging it up and down to protect himself, while half-jokingly saying, "Brother Min, if you had arrived a little later, I might not have seen tomorrow's sun."
He heard shouts of "Min Baoyi," "Retreat," "Tighten security," and more, as the thugs scattered in panic, no longer focusing on attacking him. Then, a fierce blade wind surged from the other end of the alley.
Although he couldn't open his eyes yet, just from the sound, Chen Mu recognized it as Min Baoyi's blade!
Min Baoyi, a master of Muscle Tempering, had a perfectly toned and resilient body. With his mastery of Blade Aura, he stood at the pinnacle of strength, unleashing a blade technique that was unmatched in ferocity. Wherever he went, there was no one who could stand against him, as if a fierce beast was pushing its way through.
After Chen Mu managed to wipe off the quicklime from his face with blood-stained water and slightly opened his eyes, he witnessed a hellish scene. Blood, organs, and other gruesome sights covered the alley, and many thugs' bodies were torn apart like they had been mauled by a wild beast! Min Baoyi was furious.
As the District Prefect of Nine Streets Ward, he had the confidence to assure Chen Mu that they could coexist peacefully in Nine Streets Ward. It wasn't just his own formidable strength; besides the two hundred men under his command in the City Guard, he also had numerous informers who kept him updated on the activities in Nine Streets Ward.
He had just finished drinking and talking with Chen Mu when he turned around to find trouble brewing. If not for his informer's timely report, he wouldn't have known about the situation, as he was nearby. Later, he would have to explain how such a large-scale incident occurred without his knowledge.
"With so many people, they managed to create such a scene without alerting me..."
Min Baoyi understood the situation clearly.
This incident wasn't aimed at Chen Mu but at him, or more precisely, at Xu Hongyu. It was an attempt to kill Chen Mu in his territory, to intimidate him and send a warning to Xu Hongyu.
Min Baoyi stood beside Chen Mu, holding his bloodstained patrol saber, and asked in a deep voice, "How are you?"
"I'm fine, just got splashed with some quicklime. I'll be fine after washing it off." Chen Mu shook his head. "Does Brother Min know who these people are?"
"Not yet." Min Baoyi frowned. "But I intentionally let some of them escape. By tracking them down, we'll find the source. Rest assured, I'll give you an explanation for this."
Hearing Min Baoyi's words, Chen Mu didn't ask further. He followed Min Baoyi back to the City Guard to deal with the mess.
