Chapter 289: Out of Town Tonight, Wanna Come?
Chapter 289: Out of Town Tonight, Wanna Come?
It had been three days since Elusa returned.
During this time, Rod and Mila visited her at the editorial office out of concern.
At the time, Elusa was in high spirits, giving orders left and right. She asked someone to adjust the lighting, then requested past issues of the magazine for reference, and soon after, she was calling for different outfits.
The entire editorial department was in a frenzy under her command, and it felt like it had become her territory.
When the original editors saw Rod and Mila, they seemed to have found their saviors, hoping they could convince Elusa to leave.
Rod, in a serious tone, said, "Don't be too harsh." But Mila added, "Go for it, Elusa!"
The editors almost fainted from the sudden darkness in their vision.
Fortunately, Elusa promised to arrange reasonable break times later, sparing the part-timers' lives.
"They're too relaxed," Elusa complained when she returned to the guild. "I'm working hard for the magazine's sales, but they're so lackadaisical."
"Not everyone has your level of energy," Rod said. "Besides, most of them are just regular people."
"Oh, you're right. I overlooked that," Elusa reflected seriously. "I thought passion for a career could ignite boundless energy."
"Is it possible that many people work there to make a living, not because they love it..."
Elusa nodded. "I see. It looks like I'll have to apologize next time I visit."
Rod felt she wouldn't receive another invitation... unless that issue sold like crazy and the editorial department gave out bonuses.
"By the way, I'm taking a day off. Keep an eye out for high-paying quests for me. This month's rent is still an issue."
Mila smiled and nodded. "Okay~"
Rod asked, "Don't you get paid for modeling?"
Mila explained, "Since Elusa is new in the industry, although her reputation boosted the pay, the total amount is still low."
"The pay is so low, and you even worked three days straight..."
"That's passion!" Elusa seemed to glow with enthusiasm.
The boss must love employees like this—taking meager wages, happily working overtime for the love of their work.
"Leave the quests to us. We'll definitely pick a suitable one for you," Rod said solemnly.
This time, even tricking Elusa would feel burdensome.
With Natsu, Gray, and Kana absent, the guild seemed slightly less noisy.
However...
"Hey, man!"
"Watch this, Elfman! Feel the power of my muscles!"
"Spirit Magic: Bear Spirit Possession!"
"Is it necessary to use magic?"
"Aren't you the one glowing, Tono!"
Bijida complained and started an odd dance, creating chaos in the bar.
Rod tossed his pen and squeezed next to Mila, "Even without Natsu, it's still as noisy as ever."
"This is how the guild is," Mila seemed to challenge Rod, squeezing back towards him.
Rod resisted for a few seconds before suddenly releasing his strength, causing Mila to lose her balance and lean into him, almost falling into his embrace.
He hugged her contentedly, "I'm planning to go out of town tonight. Wanna come with me?"
Mila tapped his chest, "Is it for that?"
Rod caressed her smooth, white hair, "Yes. I originally wanted to go with the Guild Master like before, but now... I have a super reliable girlfriend, don't I?"
"Okay." Mila was delighted that Rod trusted her so much. "What about the Guild Master?"
"Let's invite the Guild Master too. If something unexpected happens, you can take the Soul of Satan and run, leaving the rest to the Guild Master."
Rod flashed an evil smile, clearly joking.
"You're so mean," Mila leaned on Rod's chest, closing her eyes for a moment with a smile on her lips.
In truth, she wanted to sleep like this, but they were in the guild, and she missed the days on the road when she could hold him for as long as she liked.
Mira gently rubbed Rod's chest, feeling a bit disappointed that the Guild Master didn't seem keen on them taking another extended vacation together anytime soon.
Rod felt a twinge of unfairness. Why was it that Mira could casually ruffle his chest, while he'd get a punch if he dared do the same to her?
"You're thinking naughty thoughts, aren't you?" Mira asked.
"How could you think that?" Rod replied honestly. "I was thinking about something pleasant."
"Oh, so it is a naughty thought," Mira teased.
"You're slandering me. You're not allowed to move for ten minutes as punishment," Rod said, feigning seriousness.
Mira rolled her eyes and sat back down. She knew she couldn't get away with such behavior inside the guild.
"Mira, we want this quest," said Reby, placing a quest sheet on the table and then putting a hand beside her mouth. She whispered, "I didn't see anything just now~"
Mira's face turned red, and she tried to maintain her composure as she passed the quest sheet to Rod, saying, "Take a look. Don't you think this quest isn't suitable for Reby and the others?"
Rod examined the sheet with a serious expression, "Hmm, I think it's not just this one. There aren't any suitable quests for Reby on the entire bulletin board."
Reby was shocked, "You're using your position for personal gain!"
Mira nodded in agreement, "Exactly."
"Mira~" Reby pestered her.
Rod, who was still reading the sheet, asked, "Why do you guys want to go so far away?"
"Because Jet and Troy said that it's been boring doing quests near the guild lately. Sometimes, they also want to venture out on a long journey," Reby explained.
Rod looked at Jet and Troy, who averted their eyes, feeling a bit guilty.
Rod suspected that these two thought his relationship with Mira had grown closer after their trip, and now they wanted to try the same.
Jet and Troy anxiously sent pleading glances at Rod, urging him to approve the quest.
Rod carefully reviewed the quest details and was relieved to find that it was just an escort mission to gather herbs in the mountains, not too challenging.
Otherwise, given their current state, Rod wouldn't dare to agree.
After completing the registration process for them, Mira smiled and instructed, "Reby, do your best. Jet and Troy, don't hold them back~"
Jet and Troy felt a metaphorical arrow pierce their chests, "Why do you have such a low opinion of us...?"
Mira just smiled without responding.
...
Rod wasn't sure how big a real Mountain Wyvern was, nor did he know if there would be any unusual phenomena during the initial summoning. But he knew that being cautious was the right approach.
Even if he didn't want to disturb the villagers or cause panic, he couldn't attempt the summoning in broad daylight within the city.
That evening, they waited until nightfall before leaving the city with the Guild Master.
The three rode on River Crabs for about twenty kilometers before finally stopping in a grassy area at the foot of a small hill.
Makarov and Mira nodded at Rod and stepped back to give him space.
Following the procedure, Rod first summoned the Azure Engraved Statue and cast the Insight Crown on himself. After restoring his mana, he recited the incantation that he hadn't fully chanted in a long time:
"I am the one who connects the two realms. O beings of the Summoner Canyon, heed my call and cross the threshold! Mountain Wyvern!"
A yellowish-brown light illuminated the ground, forming three giant stones or perhaps a small mountain.
A massive creature took shape within the yellowish-brown light. It spread its wings as if about to take flight, and with its head raised, it let out a dragon's roar, "Roar~~~~"
