Chapter 289: A Newbie's Day (Part 3)
Chapter 289: A Newbie’s Day (Part 3)
Under the watchful eyes of the players, Luck King silently closed his eyes, muttering prayers to every deity he could think of, from the Jade Emperor to the Buddha. Finally, he took a deep breath and slowly opened the box.
The player running the betting pool anxiously stood on tiptoes.
“Swish—”
A faint white light emanated from the metal box.
【Kobold Leather Pants】
Quality: None
Description: Unlike wild dogs, kobolds have scaly skin without fur, leaving them shivering in the cold. Those fortunate enough to own leather pants made from animal hides often strut proudly. If you lean in closely, you might catch a peculiar smell.
“Sigh—”
“Turns out he’s just another unlucky guy.”
“What’s so exciting about a pair of smelly pants?”
Listening to the ridicule around him, Luck King’s face turned beet red. Clenching his teeth, he muttered, “Just you wait. I still have three chances left. I refuse to believe I won’t get anything good!”
Among the crowd, the robed mage chuckled sinisterly.
Charlotte stared intently at Luck King from afar, his hooded eyes filled with an ominous darkness as he murmured, “Hehe, poor child. This is only the beginning of hell.”
“Again, again!”
Luck King panted heavily, sweat dripping from his brow.
Another white light flashed.
A foul stench wafted from the box, so potent that flies buzzed toward it.
【Kobold Butcher’s Leather Mask】
Quality: None
Description: Kobolds are far from clean, often downright filthy. Even they struggle to endure the stench of rotting meat, prompting one clever kobold butcher to invent this leather mask. However, it seems well-worn and not recently cleaned.
“How can this be?”
Luck King stood frozen as if struck by lightning, his face pale with disbelief.
“Hahaha, this guy is insanely unlucky.”
“Well, looks like he’s the chosen one of the Kobold God!”
Even Charlotte, watching from the crowd, showed a hint of pity in his eyes.
The pungent stench and the players’ relentless mockery enveloped Luck King.
Yet instead of collapsing, he became more agitated. His breathing quickened, his face flushed, and veins bulged on his forehead.
“It’s just a couple of failures. It doesn’t mean anything!”
“A Luck King can’t lose!”
“My turn. Open the box!”
Luck King slammed the box with his palm, shouting fiercely.
Another faint white light emerged from the new metal box.
【Unhatched Kobold Egg】
Quality: None
Description: Kobolds incubate their eggs in warm, dry caves. Failed hatchings become nutritious provisions. They taste like chicken eggs but with a strong gamy flavor. While filling, no self-respecting chef would consider using them.
“Another dud, another dud!”
Luck King’s face turned ghostly pale. Shaking with emotion, his words became incoherent.
“This guy’s luck is abysmal.”
“A catastrophic start.”
“A little gambling is fun, but big bets destroy lives. Hardcore gambling? Instant ruin!”
Even the spectators began to pity him.
A newbie, taking a loan to gamble, only to have terrible luck.
He’d practically maxed out every negative buff. If the last box failed too, he’d be crushed by debt and left penniless—a catastrophic start with no chance of recovery.
“Only one box left.”
Luck King panted, sweat dripping from his chin. He lifted his head slightly, bloodshot eyes glinting with fervor.
“Children don’t cry every day; gamblers don’t always lose. Watch me turn the tide!”
“Open the box!”
Luck King roared. His resolute shout of “open the box” carried the weight of everything on the line.
“Swish—”
From the crack of the metal box, another faint white light emerged.
【Kobold Wooden Spear】
Quality: None
Description: As a prolific species, kobolds often band together for hunts. The spear is their weapon of choice. However, they avoid large creatures, as these crude tools can’t even pierce thick fur.
“Thud.”
Luck King collapsed to his knees.
His face was ashen, his eyes hollow, as though his soul had been ripped away.
“How is this possible… how is this possible…”
“I had insider information…”
Lonely as Snow gently patted Luck King on the shoulder, but his own expression wasn’t much better, shadowed with despair.
“This guy isn’t just bad at this game—”
“He dragged me down with him—”
“Should’ve stuck to Singo’s guide.”
Outwardly composed, Lonely as Snow was crying inside. The thought of starting the game burdened with five gold coins of debt filled him with regret.
Having lost all faith in the pitiful odds, Lonely as Snow walked to the box with a resigned attitude, ready to accept whatever came.
“Well, I’m here anyway. Might as well try my luck.”
“Who knows? Maybe I’ll stumble upon a miracle.”
“Heh.”
Lonely as Snow casually flipped open the box.
“Swish—”
“No way, a hit!”
“The first blue-tier item of the launch!”
“Now that’s the real Luck King!”
The crowd erupted into excitement. Even the kneeling Luck King turned his head in disbelief, and Charlotte’s eyes widened in the shadows.
Brilliant blue light radiated from the box.
Inside lay an exquisitely crafted piece of armor, etched with intricate runes and exuding an aura of opulence.
The chest plate bore an emblem of flames entwined with a dragon, clearly a masterpiece from the kingdom’s magic department.
【Kingdom Mithril Armor】
Quality: Rare
Description: Crafted from mithril, one of the strongest known materials, this armor combines riveted iron strips with leather lining, reinforced with chainmail for joint protection. While wearing it, minor spells and conventional attacks are almost ineffective.
“No way…”
“He actually pulled something good.”
Lonely as Snow stood frozen, unsure how to react.
The snake-person receptionist approached with a smile. “You’re quite lucky to receive such a blessing. It seems His Majesty holds you in high regard.”
Finally snapping out of his stupor, Lonely as Snow’s face lit up with joy.
“No way! I actually pulled it!”
Human emotions are never in sync. Luck King remained on the ground, devastated.
“But I’m the real Luck King… the next one was supposed to be mine…”
