Chapter 288: You're Lucky You Can't See It
Chapter 288: You're Lucky You Can't See It
In the eerie silence, Hermione finally couldn't hold back and asked.
"Are you looking at Thestrals?"
"Yeah", Luna's gaze turned to Hermione, and she said suddenly, "You're lucky you can't see them."
Lucky?
Hermione's face turned red. She felt that Luna was definitely mocking her.
"That's not necessarily true! How do you know I can't see them? They look a lot like horses, very tall and large, with wings like bats, and so thin you can see their bones."
Hermione spoke fluently, drawing from her personal experiences from the previous year and the descriptions she had read in books.
"Besides, Thestrals are very magical creatures. Usually, only those who have directly witnessed death can see them." Hermione searched her memory, trying to make herself sound like she had seen Thestrals firsthand.
However, when she mentioned death, Hermione stopped, not continuing. She suddenly understood why Luna had said she was lucky.
Hermione stared blankly at Luna and Ivan. Had they witnessed death?
Hermione hesitated about whether to ask. She remembered that Ivan couldn't see Thestrals last year, and she was also puzzled as to why Luna, who was a year younger than her, had experienced such things.
Luna noticed Hermione's expression and thought for a moment before looking at Ivan and whispering softly.
"My mother was very fond of experiments. She always wanted to create some interesting magic! One day, one of her spells went wrong, and the explosion consumed her during an experiment, right in front of me."
Luna's voice was soft and gentle, yet very calm. Only her eyes betrayed a hint of sorrow.
"Sorry, I didn't know", Hermione said apologetically.
Luna's words also stirred up Ivan's buried memories, and his expression darkened.
Although Ivan had a well-thought-out plan to save Aisha, the difficulty of improving the Polyjuice Potion far exceeded his expectations.
Ivan was even afraid that when he went back in time, he would find that all his preparations were in vain.
"Hornets", Luna said suddenly.
"What?" Ivan snapped back to reality and looked at Luna curiously.
"I told you about the Hornets!" Luna's eyes examined Ivan, her expression somewhat dazed, mimicking the buzzing sound of Hornets.
"
Hornets? What were those?
Hermione was confused. She had never read about such creatures in any book.
Ivan, however, knew that Hornets were just a figment of Luna's imagination. Perhaps Luna believed that people's troubles were caused by Hornets.
"Do you know how to get rid of these Hornets?" Ivan said, somewhat helplessly.
Luna tilted her head, thought for a moment, and frowned slightly, as if really trying to figure out how to drive away the Hornets.
Ivan shook his head, about to say that he was just joking,
when the blonde little witch suddenly stood up, took a few steps forward, and, in Ivan's puzzled expression, wrapped her arms around him in a hug.
A faint scent of jasmine wafted into his nose, along with a hint of the smell of a flying ship.
Ivan was taken aback. He hadn’t expected Luna to suddenly hug him.
Luna’s hug wasn’t particularly warm, but it interrupted Ivan’s thoughts, leaving him unable to think about anything else.
Hermione’s eyes widened in shock as she watched the scene unfold. She opened her mouth as if to say something but ultimately remained silent.
After a while, Luna released Ivan and returned to her seat, and everything returned to normal.
"Feeling better?" Luna asked.
"Is this how you get rid of harassment flies?" Ivan didn’t know what to say.
Luna nodded, her gaze wandering. "On the day my mother died, my father comforted me this way. I hope it helps."
"I’m not as fragile as you think", Ivan said with a mix of laughter and exasperation.
"I know, I know", Luna said softly, her voice almost musical. "I told him the same thing that day, but I think this method isn’t bad, is it?"
"Yeah, it works", Ivan said, looking at Luna for a long moment.
Luna’s actions always caught him off guard. He could never predict what the little witch would do next.
She was like a puzzle.
Thinking about how Luna seemed to understand Owls and could decipher Parseltongue, Ivan became even more puzzled. He couldn’t resist asking.
"Can you tell me how you knew I wasn’t feeling well? And can you understand Owls? Is it because of Legilimency?"
"I don’t know such advanced magic. I just feel emotions and guess what you’re thinking", Luna shook her head, the hanging dirigible earrings swinging with her movement. "It’s a very special feeling, but it doesn’t work with a lot of people."
Feeling emotions? Ivan had no idea Luna had this ability. It wasn’t mentioned at all in the original timeline.
Ivan couldn’t help but wonder if this unusual ability was related to some bloodline, considering how both Luna and her father were a bit peculiar.
Ivan didn’t dare to think further, worried that Luna might sense his thoughts. He glanced at her, but the little witch just smiled at him.
The Thestral-drawn carriage continued on its journey, and the compartment returned to its peaceful state. Ivan didn’t speak again, and Hermione sat quietly beside him, lost in her own thoughts.
Luna hummed a little tune to herself while reading the newspaper, the sound of the carriage wheels rolling over the road providing a natural accompaniment.
After traveling up a long, winding road, the carriage finally came to a stop. Not far away, Hogwarts loomed, with dark, ominous figures gliding through the sky above the castle.
Those were the Dementors, responsible for guarding the school.
Ivan got out of the carriage, joining the hundreds of others who had already arrived. Many young witches and wizards were making their way towards the castle gates in small groups.
On the nearby steps, Ron was waving at them, and Harry was there too, looking like he had just woken up after being unconscious for most of the journey.
"They’re waiting for you. I won’t intrude", Luna said, and without waiting for Ivan’s response, she turned and joined the Ravenclaw line, following the crowd into the tower.
