Chapter 287: Why Can Only I Not See It?
Chapter 287: Why Can Only I Not See It?
The Hogwarts Express sped along, encountering no further trouble on the way.
Due to the delay caused by the Dementor search, it was completely dark by the time the train pulled into the station, with only the occasional streetlamp guiding the way.
Harry had been truly unconscious for the entire journey, and he showed no signs of waking up. Hermione and Ron were very worried, while Ivan found it somewhat strange.
He remembered that in the original timeline, Harry did not remain unconscious for this long.
But then Ivan quickly realized that in the original timeline, Harry had not been surrounded by a group of Dementors on the train as he had just been.
Even Ivan himself had been unable to control his emotions and had acted to drive away those creatures that sucked joy and created pain, so the impact on Harry had been even greater.
When the train finally came to a stop, Ivan packed up his luggage, and Lupin took the initiative to carry the unconscious Harry on his back. Together, they all got off the train.
Malfoy, accompanied by his two cronies, Goyle and Crabbe, had just gotten off the train when he saw Harry lying on Lupin's shoulder. His eyes lit up, and he approached them with a show of concern.
"Oh, our poor Potter. I heard he fainted from a group of Dementors. Is that true? Is he alright?" Malfoy feigned concern, tsking in mock sympathy.
His two cronies, Goyle and Crabbe, laughed foolishly, filling the air with a sense of glee.
"Do you want a fight, Malfoy? Harry was attacked by the Dementors! Attacked, you understand?" Ron said angrily.
"Attacked, how was he attacked? Was Potter kissed by a Dementor? I heard from my father that they love to do that to prisoners", Malfoy pulled his wizard's robe over his head, mimicking the Dementors, and taunted Ron.
"Malfoy, the Dementor's Kiss is far more terrifying than you can imagine! It's not something to joke about", Lupin frowned and interrupted Malfoy, continuing sternly. "It can suck out your soul, leaving your body an empty shell!"
"Who are you?" Malfoy was startled, then looked at him with annoyance.
"I am the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor!" Lupin said calmly.
"Oh, is that so? Nice to meet you, Professor! I really hope you stay for the whole term", Malfoy put on a nasty smile, though he did not dare to be too obvious.
After saying this, Malfoy called out to Goyle and Crabbe and left, giving Ivan a fierce glare before he went.
Last year, Ivan had taken away his House-Elf, so his mother, Narcissa, had to cook during the summer.
One could imagine what it would be like for a noblewoman who had never cooked before to suddenly start doing so.
As a result, he had been forced to eat terrible food for several weeks until his father could no longer stand it and found a servant who knew culinary magic to end his miserable life.
"Why does that Malfoy target Harry so much?" Lupin watched Malfoy leave and turned to Ivan, asking curiously.
How should I know? Ivan shook his head helplessly but tried to analyze it based on Malfoy's behavior in the original timeline.
"I heard some kids like to use strange ways to hide their, well, concern! Muggles call it something like... Tsundere?"
Is that so? Lupin had never heard the term Tsundere, but he understood what Ivan meant.
"Ivan doesn't seem to be the way you described him, does he?" Ron stammered, while Hermione looked at Ivan with a strange expression.
"Don't you think Malfoy always reacts strongly whenever Harry gets injured or achieves something?" Ivan said offhandedly.
Ron thought about it carefully for a moment, shuddering. Could it really be like that? That would be terrifying.
As they talked, they approached a carriage.
Lupin laid the sleeping Harry on the long bench at the back of the carriage to make him more comfortable, then sat opposite him. He turned to the others and said, "There's room for one more. Who wants to come up?"
Hermione glanced at Ivan hesitantly, while Ron climbed into the carriage and sat next to Lupin, ready to help take care of Harry.
Despite Harry taking up two seats, the carriage slowly started moving, showing that it wasn't necessary to have four people to set off.
Sitting inside, Ron was still amazed that the carriage could move on its own. He suspected some advanced magic had been applied, much like the car he and Harry had driven last year.
The remaining two turned towards the next carriage.
Ivan took a few steps forward but didn't immediately get in. He silently observed the two Thestrals standing at the front of the carriage.
They looked emaciated, with dragon-like heads and no flesh on their bodies. Their black skin clung tightly to their skeletal frames, and the gaps between the bones were clearly visible.
Most striking were their large, black wings, resembling oversized bat wings, blending into the dark night sky and giving an eerie, ominous appearance.
He could see the Thestrals now.
Of course, Ivan thought, having killed four people and witnessed over a dozen wizard corpses in the past two months, he had certainly come to understand death.
Looking at them, Ivan felt a bit melancholic. Last year, he had hoped he would be able to see such creatures.
Hermione found it odd that Ivan had stopped. Just as she was about to ask, a clear, ethereal voice came from the carriage.
"They look pretty cool, don't they?"
Ivan was pulled from his thoughts and noticed a young witch sitting alone in the carriage, holding a newspaper.
"Why are you by yourself, Luna? Where are your roommates?" Ivan asked curiously.
"They don't want to sit in the same carriage with me", Luna said softly, without a hint of dissatisfaction.
"But I'm fine on my own. The carriage will move anyway."
"Want to sit up here?" Luna suddenly patted the seat next to her, inviting him.
"Sure, that makes it three of us!" Ivan nodded and climbed into the carriage, sitting opposite Luna.
Hermione followed, hesitating for a moment before sitting next to Ivan.
The Thestrals pulled the carriage slowly, moving through the dim night towards Hogwarts Castle.
Ivan watched the Thestrals, finding them to be a truly magical creature. Staring at them always brought a sense of calm.
Luna tilted her head and watched as well.
Hermione widened her eyes and followed their gaze, but saw nothing but empty space.
Thinking back to last year when she had touched one of these creatures, Hermione felt a bit discouraged. This meant that Thestrals were real.
But why couldn't she see them?
