Chapter 287: Tsunade Wants to Shirk Responsibility
Chapter 287: Tsunade Wants to Shirk Responsibility
"I want to develop a sealing technique that can store additional chakra within the body, but this involves a lot of chakra meridians. How can I set up a sealing technique in the body without affecting the chakra pathways?" Mu Yue asked.
In order to give himself a "power bank," Mu Yue was now studying sealing techniques more diligently than he had ever prepared for his civil service exams. Whenever he had free time, he would ponder sealing techniques.
Currently, half of the sealing techniques he had come across were already at the Proficient level, and the rest were mostly at the Skilled level with over half the experience.
Mu Yue felt that even if he was lacking in sealing techniques, it was only by a small margin. He had seen the panel of a sealing jounin instructor, and his proficiency and quality surpassed theirs. What he lacked now was expertise in medical ninjutsu to stabilize the development of his technique.
"Huh? Are you sure you're here to ask about medical ninjutsu?" Tsunade teased after hearing Mu Yue's question.
"I'm sure," Mu Yue continued calmly. "It involves a lot of medical knowledge and performing delicate operations within the human body, isn't that right?"
One of the reasons he offered money upfront was because he was worried that Tsunade would ask him to leave after hearing his first sentence. Now that she had taken the 600,000 ryo, she would at least have to hear him out.
Tsunade pondered for a moment. Indeed, developing such a ninjutsu required a high level of proficiency in medical ninjutsu.
How did Tsunade know this? Because she was aware of a sealing technique similar to the one Mu Yue described.
It was a technique passed down by her grandmother, Mito Uzumaki, called the Yin Seal, which could store chakra.
Tsunade herself had not learned this technique because it had significant drawbacks and was extremely difficult to master.
However, the Yin Seal had great potential, and Tsunade had been thinking about how to improve it or develop complementary ninjutsu.
But that was before—before the deaths of her brother and lover. Now, Tsunade had lost her enthusiasm for ninja affairs. She knew that if her ideas were successful, they could greatly enhance her strength, but she didn't really care anymore.
What was the point of becoming stronger? The people she loved were gone. No matter how much she improved her medical ninjutsu, she could only heal the living, not bring back the dead.
Now, Tsunade only treated her research as a way to pass the time. When she was extremely bored, had no desire to drink, and had no money to gamble, she would research for a while.
"That's true," Tsunade said calmly, hoping to discourage Mu Yue from his endeavor. "But do you really understand the difficulty of developing the ninjutsu you desire?"
"First of all, it requires an extremely high level of proficiency in sealing techniques. Playing around with seals within your own body can easily affect it."
Performing ninjutsu required chakra, using taijutsu required chakra, and even climbing walls and walking on water required chakra. To a large extent, the amount of chakra one possessed could determine a ninja's strength.
If one could easily create a chakra "power bank" within their body, it would have become a mandatory means to become a powerful ninja. Indeed, this was an extremely challenging task.
Mu Yue lifted his glasses, extended his hand, and displayed the Five Elements Seal, causing five dazzling rays of chakra to appear in his palm.
"The Five Elements Seal... You can cast it so smoothly," Tsunade said, a little surprised. This was already a very advanced sealing technique.
"I'm quite confident in my sealing technique skills," Mu Yue said with a smile as he dispersed the chakra. "I've also mastered the Four Symbols Seal."
"You've even mastered the Four Symbols Seal," Tsunade exclaimed, even more astonished. This was an incredibly powerful sealing technique that even she hadn't mastered, meaning that Mu Yue's sealing technique prowess surpassed her own.
"What level is your medical ninjutsu at now?" Tsunade asked.
Mu Yue showed Tsunade his Chakra Surgical Scalpel and Palm Mystical Technique.
Tsunade felt a headache coming on as she watched. Anyone who could master these two techniques was already a highly competent medical ninja.
She didn't need to think hard to know that the upcoming explanation wouldn't be easy.
To use an analogy, Tsunade had originally thought she would be teaching basic arithmetic, but it turned out she needed to teach advanced mathematics.
"This is so troublesome. Why don't I just get Shizune to teach you instead?" Tsunade lay on the wooden corridor, her laziness getting the better of her.
"That's not an option," Shizune retorted, unable to hold back her own teasing. "How could I possibly teach someone like Instructor Mu Yue?"
Shizune pushed Tsunade gently with her small hands, urging her, "Lady Tsunade, you've already accepted Instructor Mu Yue's payment. You can't go back on your word now."
Mu Yue silently gave Shizune a mental thumbs-up. It seemed that being a good teacher did have its rewards; his efforts in teaching her hadn't been in vain.
After Shizune pushed her a few more times, Tsunade sat up straight. The first thing she did was grab Shizune's small face with both hands and give it a good rub.
"Mmm, Lady Tsunade~" Shizune whined as she looked at Tsunade pitifully.
"A child like you is meant to be teased by me. How dare you lecture me!" Tsunade said with a satisfied smile after she'd had her fun.
After a short one-sided scuffle with Shizune, Tsunade calmed herself and began to answer Mu Yue's questions.
Mu Yue had a lot of buffs—he was Jiraiya's protege, Shizune quite liked him as a teacher, and he had even paid in advance.
If even one of these factors had been missing, Tsunade might not have been so willing to help.
Mu Yue had to admit that he had come to the right person. Although Tsunade's personality left something to be desired, her skill in medical ninjutsu was unparalleled. After just one hour of exchanging ideas with her, Mu Yue discovered many issues he hadn't noticed before.
Perhaps due to some underlying frustration, Tsunade's tone was sharp as she pointed out Mu Yue's shortcomings. How could he not know something so basic? Even Tonton knew that!
Time flew by when one was having fun, and indeed, Tsunade proved to be an excellent teacher when it came to medical knowledge. Mu Yue listened intently to her lecture, and before they knew it, five and a half hours had passed, from noon to dusk.
"Finally, it's almost over. I must treat myself to a good drink tonight!" Tsunade exclaimed with a relieved expression. She rarely taught Shizune for such a long stretch.
Tsunade decided that this money wasn't worth the effort. The next time Mu Yue came looking for her, she would simply turn him away and return to her carefree lifestyle.
"Lady Tsunade, if you're feeling tired, we can end the lesson now and you can take a rest," Mu Yue said with a gentle smile.
"Of course!" Tsunade readily agreed. Only a fool would refuse such a good offer.
Mu Yue looked up at the sky and then asked with concern, "After teaching for so long, Lady Tsunade, you must be exhausted and hungry. As it happens, I'm quite adept at cooking. How about I prepare a meal for you?"
"Instructor Mu Yue, you're so kind," Shizune thought to herself, marveling at how he offered to end the lesson early and now wanted to help with dinner.
She attributed this to Mu Yue's understanding of the hardships of teaching, and she appreciated his thoughtfulness.
Tsunade was always happy to accept a windfall, but she was concerned about Mu Yue's cooking skills. "What do you mean by 'quite adept'? How good are you?" she asked.
"I'm more confident in my cooking than in my sealing techniques," Mu Yue replied with a smile.
As it turned out, his cooking could even conquer those who weren't human.
Intrigued by his claim, Tsunade's interest was piqued. Mu Yue had already demonstrated exceptional skill in sealing techniques.
Mu Yue went out to buy groceries and also brought back some pastries from home. He then started cooking in Tsunade's kitchen.
"Instructor Mu Yue, let me help you wash the vegetables," Shizune offered as she made her way to the kitchen.
"Sure, you're such a good kid. Thank you," Mu Yue said with a smile, handing her three packages of pastries.
Shizune could smell the enticing aroma wafting from the packages, but instead of taking them, she looked at Mu Yue with curiosity.
"This is your payment," Mu Yue said, pressing the pastries into her hands.
After washing the vegetables, Shizune curiously took a bite of one of the pastries. Her eyes lit up instantly, as she had never tasted such delicious sweets before.
"Instructor Mu Yue, where did you buy these in the village? They're so good!" Shizune asked eagerly.
If they weren't too expensive, she wanted to buy some with her allowance and enjoy them at home.
"They're not for sale," Mu Yue replied.
"Why not?" Shizune asked.
"Because I made them myself," Mu Yue said.
Shizune was shocked. She had no idea that Mu Yue was such a talented chef.
She carefully put away the remaining two pastries, intending to savor one each day.
Shizune would usually share tasty treats with Tsunade, but sweets were an exception. In her memory, Tsunade didn't like sweets. When buying treats for Shizune, Tsunade had once wondered aloud why so many people enjoyed sweets.
After Mu Yue finished cooking, he packed some of the dishes into a bento box and had his shadow clone deliver it to Minato. He then brought the rest of the food out.
"The aroma is fantastic, but I wonder how it tastes," Tsunade said, even before she had taken her seat.
She glanced at the dishes, all of which were unfamiliar to her, but they looked delicious.
Tsunade picked up a piece of meat from the stir-fried pork with chili peppers and popped it into her mouth. Instantly, she was transported to another world, forgetting all her troubles.
When she came back to her senses, her mouth was burning with spice, but she couldn't stop herself from wanting more.
Shizune took a bite and was equally engrossed, devouring her food with relish.
Just as Tsunade was about to pick up another piece of meat to eat with her rice, she realized that the three dishes in front of her were empty.
"Why did you make so little? Don't underestimate a ninja's appetite," Tsunade complained, wishing there was more.
"I took into account that you would be going out drinking with Jiraiya-sama and Orochimaru-sama tonight, so I didn't make too much. I was also thinking of trying out a new dish with a whole chicken," Mu Yue explained.
Tsunade felt like punching Jiraiya right now. Couldn't they pick another day?
"But I'll be coming back tomorrow to continue my lessons, so I'll make more food then," Mu Yue added.
Tsunade was conflicted. She had originally planned to refuse any further lessons and return to her carefree life of doing nothing.
However, after tasting Mu Yue's delicious cooking and hearing about his plans for a new dish with a whole chicken, she was curious to sample his culinary creation.
"Alright, one more day of teaching then. I can earn more money and gamble more," Tsunade decided. She would teach Mu Yue for one more day, and then ask him not to come back after that.
"Okay, remember to make more food tomorrow and make it even tastier," Tsunade reminded him.
Mu Yue could tell from Tsunade's expression that his plan was working, and he nodded with a smile.
That evening, Jiraiya and Orochimaru arrived at Tsunade's place to invite her out for drinks. However, Jiraiya was perplexed by the less-than-enthusiastic look on Tsunade's face when she saw him.
There will be one more chapter coming later. I'm a bit busy today, but I should still be able to deliver over a thousand more words than yesterday.
Also, from what I've seen in the Tsunade chapter of the Minato biography, it doesn't seem like she had the Yin Seal mark on her forehead. So, I'm guessing that Tsunade acquired the Yin Seal and the Byakugo Seal during the period after the Third Ninja War when she was wandering around.
