Chapter 287 – The Newcomer's One Day (1)
Lonely Like Snow blinked, and suddenly, a bustling, vibrant city unfolded before him—so vivid it felt real. Around him stood hundreds of players, all clad in the same Newbie Uniform, fellow NewcomerPlayers just like him.
"Whoa… this is real?"
"So many people!"
"Is this Northwind Keep?"
"This city’s gorgeous—scenery lovers, rejoice!"
Lonely Like Snow scanned the surroundings, but something felt off. Though the architecture was unmistakably medieval in style, thick plumes of smoke curled into the sky in the distance. Amidst the classic European buildings, towering skyscrapers—five or six stories high—jutted into the air like intruders from another era. Even the Tiefling Guards carried Motive Rifles in their hands, yet wore impeccably traditional armor, blending into a bizarre, steam-powered aesthetic that screamed Steampunk.
Wyverns circled the sky, patrolling the city’s airspace. Meanwhile, Ogre and Great Goblin figures strolled freely through the streets, utterly unbothered, while ordinary Humans walked past them as if it were perfectly normal. To many NewcomerPlayers, the scene was surreal and bizarre.
"Whoa, monsters!"
"Relax, man—it’s just Northwind Keep’s charm."
Lonely Like Snow muttered under his breath: "So this is what S Master meant by Northwind Keep—the best starting point for new players. According to the Guide, I should first earn Faction Contribution, then directly exchange it for Dragon Blood Elixir to kickstart my character. The most efficient early-game job for a newcomer? Miner."
He glanced toward the central plaza ahead, now packed so tightly with players it was like a dam burst—water couldn’t escape. Out of the five万名 players, nearly twenty thousand had chosen Northwind Keep as their starting city. The sudden influx had nearly doubled the population of the area, and traffic was already choked.
The bulletin boards were plastered with ads, while loudspeakers blared from various corners.
"Guild Recruitment – Newcomers Welcome! 8 hours online daily. Hard workers preferred!"
"Factory No. 3 Weapon Production – Hiring Workers. Pay: 100 Faction Contribution per day."
"Newcomer Training Program! Train to become a full-fledged Holy Knight Tank."
"Novice Set – Discounted! Only 100 Copper Coins!"
"New Guild: [Dog of Kai Xiusu] – Seeking allies! Experience points unite like-minded Friends!"
"Praise Om Misea! Elite Guild [Mechanical Divinity] seeking top-tier talent. Top-tier benefits. Academic credentials preferred."
"Guild urgently needs biologists and geneticists! If you have Research Findings or have published on sci, you can join the Guild’s leadership immediately and earn the [Geneticist] title—highest-tier待遇."
"Unrivaled Dominion! Top-tier [Royal Power] Guild recruiting Newcomers. Professional Players preferred. Real-life boxing, freestyle combat experience? Bonus!"
Lonely Like Snow’s eyes darted from one ad to another, his fingers idly rubbing his chin. "Man… even in a game, they’re this intense? Are we even allowed to play, common players?"
"Ugh… classic elite guilds."
He wasn’t planning to join any Guild.
According to that “S Master” Guide he’d read, aside from a few top-tier Guilds, most offered little real help to CommonPlayers—many were just fronting as “training grounds” to bleed Newcomers dry. And the requirements? Impossible for someone like him.
Lonely Like Snow had a clear self-assessment: he was decent-looking, sure—but otherwise, utterly average. His skills were just above average, nothing more.
He pushed forward with the crowd, until he finally spotted what he was looking for.
A grumpy Great Goblin sat impatiently on a stool, his feet propped up, a wooden sign lying before him.
"Bottomless Mine – Needs 50 Miners. 20 Copper Coins per Day."
"Should be this place," Lonely Like Snow murmured.
He took a step forward—only to be yanked back by someone behind him.
"Wait, bro—are you here to play the game, or to get played by it? You really wanna go work in a mine shaft like a slave?"
Lonely Like Snow turned around. A fellow Newcomer stood there, wearing the same plain Newbie tunic. His nickname, glowing brightly above his head, read: "Lucky Emperor."
"Miner’s the highest Value Efficiency job early on," Lonely Like Snow replied calmly. "S Master’s Guide said so."
"S Master? Hardcore player!" Lucky Emperor’s eyes widened in disbelief. "You actually believe that? That’s just a scam to trap newbies!"
Lonely Like Snow didn’t argue. He just frowned. "But you’re also level one, right?"
Lucky Emperor crossed his arms, grinning confidently. "I’ve got Insider Information. My buddy’s an Internal Test Player. I know how this game works inside and out."
"Believe me or not—I’m offering a Friend connection."
Lonely Like Snow hesitated, then nodded.
The guy seemed sketchy, sure—but at least he was helpful. A Friend wouldn’t hurt.
Lucky Emperor led him straight to the densest cluster of players. Hundreds were packed shoulder to shoulder, including several high-level veteran players, their faces flushed, eyes glazed, muttering things like "Gotta drop loot!" and "Blessed by the Buddha!"—a sight that puzzled Lonely Like Snow.
Lucky Emperor pointed triumphantly into the distance. "There it is."
Lonely Like Snow followed his finger.
A massive shop stood before them, its sign reading: "Dragon's Blessing House." Inside, thousands of beautifully decorated metal crates piled high, stacked like treasure.
"Kai Xiusu's Secret Treasure?" Lonely Like Snow frowned. His suspicion of Lucky Emperor deepened.
He had read about this event in Singo’s Guide. The legendary guide had called it "The Reaper of Newbie Lettuce," "The Pit That Foolish Players Love to Jump Into," and "Poor Man’s Box"—a near-absolute worst rating.
Singo even added a note: "If you’re gonna spend gold on crates, just give it to me instead. At least you won’t get addicted."
"You know about this?" Lucky Emperor’s voice trembled with excitement, practically bouncing on his toes.
"This is a Treasure Event! Only available during Server Launch! You miss it, you lose it—most newbies don’t even know it exists!"
"This thing’s supposed to be a total scam," Lonely Like Snow replied flatly. "S Master himself warned about it."
"Who cares about Hardcore Players?" Lucky Emperor waved dismissively. "They’re full of nonsense. Remember? He said Faction Contribution was useless too!"
He shook his head with exaggerated wisdom. "You don’t get it. This is the Launch Phase!"
"Think about it—no matter how stingy the devs are, would they really risk driving new players away with a terrible drop rate? This event is pure Newcomer福利! It’s the sweet treat first—then, bam, two big blows. And this—Kai Xiusu’s Secret Treasure—is the sweet part!"
"Proof?"
"Insider Information, man! We’re sharing everything with you! You don’t believe me? Just watch me claim my rewards. You’ll regret doubting me later."
Lucky Emperor puffed out his chest, grinning with unwavering confidence.
