Chapter 285: Meeting Tsunade
Chapter 285: Meeting Tsunade
After dinner, Deidara and the other disciples returned home, while Jiraiya, eager for more company, bought some sake and the three of them chatted over drinks.
Jiraiya did most of the talking, with Mu Yue and Minato mostly listening and occasionally interjecting with small topics.
"Mimicking the Tailed Beast Ball is even more difficult than I imagined," Minato said, bringing up his attempts to create a new jutsu. He hoped to gain some inspiration from Mu Yue and Jiraiya's insights.
"To develop a jutsu similar to the Tailed Beast Ball is no simple task," Jiraiya said, stroking his chin after draining his cup of sake.
A large part of a jinchuriki's deterrence came from their ability to use the Tailed Beast Ball, a technique with immense destructive power. Even Jiraiya couldn't directly counter it and could only dodge.
"I've been trying to create a stable chakra sphere that mimics the Tailed Beast Ball, but it's very unstable and can't even pierce through a large tree," Minato continued, explaining the challenges he faced in his development.
"If it's unstable, perhaps you could find a solid, round object to help you practice, like a ball," Mu Yue suggested after a moment's thought.
Minato's eyes lit up at the idea, and he smiled at Mu Yue in gratitude. "Using a physical object to aid in practice is indeed a great idea."
After discussing the Spiraling Sphere, Mu Yue took the opportunity to share his previous idea.
"Sealing chakra in a single chakra point does seem a bit risky. I've been thinking that if we could expand the range and involve more chakra circulation points, it might just work."
"You haven't given up on that bold idea yet, huh? Theoretically, it might be possible, but it would require extremely precise chakra control and a strong foundation in medical ninjutsu," Jiraiya remarked.
He still wasn't very optimistic about this approach, as experimenting with chakra circulation points was extremely dangerous and could result in permanent damage.
Of course, with great risk came great reward. If this technique could be mastered, the boost in strength would be significant, essentially giving the user access to a large amount of extra chakra.
"Yes, I'm fairly confident in my chakra control," Mu Yue said, continuing, "However, I haven't delved too deeply into medical ninjutsu and only have a basic grasp of the Mystical Palm Technique, so it's still at the theoretical stage."
Hearing that Mu Yue had started to learn medical ninjutsu, Jiraiya reconsidered his advice.
Fortunately, Mu Yue knew his limits and wouldn't attempt anything reckless without sufficient preparation.
Minato felt a newfound respect for Mu Yue, who was going to great lengths to develop a chakra-storing technique. Not only was he diligently studying sealing techniques, but he was also learning medical ninjutsu. Minato felt a bit slack in comparison, not having spent enough time lately on developing new jutsu.
"Jiraiya-sama, as one of the Sannin, along with Tsunade-sama, could you introduce me to her? I'd like to seek her guidance on some medical ninjutsu-related matters," Mu Yue said, finally revealing his ultimate purpose after laying the groundwork.
He had wanted to meet Tsunade before, but his preparations hadn't been sufficient. Now, with some renown in the Konoha ninja world and a foundation in medical ninjutsu from the Ninja Academy, he felt more confident in approaching her.
"Tsunade, huh? Her medical ninjutsu is indeed impressive, and it could be very beneficial for your learning. But she's not the easiest person to get along with," Jiraiya said, deep in thought.
He and Tsunade were as familiar with each other as teammates and close friends could be, having faced life-and-death situations together countless times.
Objectively speaking, Jiraiya believed Tsunade had a good heart. She had proposed that each team include a medical ninja to reduce casualties, and although her suggestion hadn't been adopted, it showed her compassion.
However, to say that Tsunade had a pleasant temperament would be an overstatement. After all their years as teammates, Jiraiya knew Tsunade's personality well.
"Taking you to meet her isn't a problem, but I can't guarantee that she'll help you solve your problems," Jiraiya said as he poured himself another drink.
If Mu Yue were severely injured or fell ill, Jiraiya was confident that Tsunade, as a medical ninja, would treat him. But when it came to teaching, it was a more personal matter, and Jiraiya couldn't promise that she would agree to it. It was entirely up to her whether she wanted to impart her knowledge or not.
"That's alright, Jiraiya-sama. If you could just make the introduction, I can handle the rest and communicate directly with Tsunade-sama," Mu Yue said with a smile, offering a toast in gratitude. Having Jiraiya facilitate the meeting would undoubtedly be much better than approaching her out of the blue.
Jiraiya laughed heartily and slapped Mu Yue's shoulder. "You should be fine. You're only a tad less handsome than me, and your culinary skills are divine. If you offer to cook for her, she might just agree."
"I recall that she enjoys drinking sake and eating tender chicken," Mu Yue said, making a mental note of Tsunade's preference for chicken.
After they had their fill, Minato helped the slightly drunk Jiraiya out, and Mu Yue continued studying sealing techniques until 11:30 p.m. before finally calling it a night.
"Please go to the Hokage Building. The Third Hokage is looking for you." The ninja conveyed the message concisely.
Mu Yue nodded and left a shadow clone behind. He instructed the clone to head to the Southern Forest to meet with Kakashi once he was done at the Hokage Building.
Knock! Knock!
Mu Yue knocked on the door of the Hokage's office.
"Come in." Hiruzen Sarutobi's voice echoed from within the office.
Mu Yue pushed the door open and found Hiruzen Sarutobi inside, along with another ninja whom he didn't recognize.
"Hokage-sama." Mu Yue greeted Hiruzen respectfully and offered a smile to the unfamiliar ninja before walking up to the desk.
"Is there a mission, Hokage-sama?" Mu Yue inquired.
Hiruzen shook his head and replied with a cheerful smile, "No, it's about your promotion."
"Due to your outstanding performance at the Ninja Academy and your contributions on the battlefield, you have qualified for a promotion to jonin."
As he spoke, Hiruzen handed Mu Yue a brand-new ninja identification card. The card no longer bore the title of Special Jonin but simply read 'Jonin'.
"Thank you, Hokage-sama." Mu Yue's face lit up with a mix of excitement and gratitude, as if he had accomplished something of great importance, and Hiruzen was the benefactor who had aided him along the way.
Of course, this was all an act, and Mu Yue's heart remained unmoved.
The promotion from Special Jonin to Jonin was well within his expectations. After all, he had displayed exceptional strength and made notable contributions on the battlefield, coupled with his performance at the Ninja Academy. It was only natural to receive a promotion during a time of war when the requirements were more relaxed.
In fact, this promotion was slightly slower than Mu Yue had anticipated. After all, it had been some time since he returned from the battlefield, and he guessed that Hiruzen was preparing to promote a batch of deserving ninjas together, which was why it had been delayed a little.
Mu Yue glanced at the information of the unfamiliar ninja with his peripheral vision and saw that he, too, was being promoted to jonin.
"There's no need to thank me. This is something you earned through your own efforts and strength. It's the reward you deserve for protecting Konoha," Hiruzen said, his smile filled with satisfaction.
Mu Yue didn't continue with the pleasantries, but his expression remained excited and grateful. He understood that while Hiruzen denied it verbally, he was pleased on the inside.
This promotion only entailed a change in ninja rank and didn't bring about any positional changes.
The reason was simple. There was little room for further advancement in his position at the Ninja Academy. There were two people above him: the head teacher, Shinoabu Hisashi, and the principal, Hiruzen Sarutobi himself.
Shinoabu Hisashi was only an ordinary jonin, but he had been working at the Ninja Academy for a long time and was considered a veteran. There was no reason to remove him from his position without cause, and the same went for Hiruzen's position as principal, which was especially significant during these times.
Of course, with the promotion to jonin, Mu Yue had risen to the upper echelons of Konoha, and it wouldn't do to not offer any substantial rewards. Thus, Mu Yue was granted two additional opportunities to select ninjutsu from the Ninja Library.
As Mu Yue was about to leave, two more ninjas entered the Hokage's office, further confirming his suspicions. It wasn't common to see so many people visiting the Hokage's office at once.
After leaving the building, Mu Yue headed straight to the Southern Forest for his cultivation practice.
Around noon, Mu Yue returned to his home in the main city. Since Jiraiya had mentioned taking him to meet Tsunade the day before, he knew that this was something he couldn't entrust to a shadow clone.
"It never gets old, no matter how many times I eat it," Jiraiya said, expressing his satisfaction as he took advantage of the opportunity to enjoy another free lunch.
"Just remember not to bring up topics like her brother or lover in front of her," Jiraiya reminded him, thinking of something.
"I understand," Mu Yue nodded, indicating that he would keep these taboos in mind.
Then, Jiraiya took Mu Yue directly to Tsunade's house.
"At this time, she should have just woken up. If she's not at home, we'll have to look for her at the nearby casino," Jiraiya said, unsure if they would find Tsunade at home.
Although Tsunade wasn't like him, searching for the Child of Prophecy, she had lost motivation in ninja-related matters due to the deaths of her brother and lover. If not for the war, she probably wouldn't have stayed in Konoha.
Fortunately, Mu Yue and Jiraiya's timing was good. As they stepped into Tsunade's yard, they spotted her sitting on the corridor under the eaves of her house, along with Shizune.
"Jiraiya, what brings you here? I'll beat you up if you're thinking of peeping," Tsunade said, her arms crossed as she looked at Jiraiya.
"Haha, is that the impression I give you? But now isn't the time for that," Jiraiya laughed loudly in response, showing no signs of embarrassment.
