Chapter 284: You Disrupted My Thinking
Chapter 284: You Disrupted My Thinking
"Of course, I know they won't award two Order of Merlins, but can't we exchange for a higher one?" Ron pouted, clearly unhappy with Hermione's skepticism.
Just as Ron turned to look at Ivan, intending to say something, the train suddenly jolted.
Then the train began to slow down, seemingly about to stop.
"Have we arrived? This time it was so fast", Ron rubbed his stomach, eager to enjoy dinner in the Great Hall.
"Not yet", Hermione shook her head and looked out the window.
The weather had been sunny when they boarded, but now the outside was shrouded in darkness, with black clouds covering the sky and large raindrops sliding down, affecting visibility.
"Why are we stopping? Could the train have broken down mid-journey and need repairs?" Harry speculated.
"I've never heard George or anyone mention this happening. We can't be stranded here, can we?" Ron complained.
After a slow movement, the train came to a sudden halt with a loud clunk.
Outside the carriage, a commotion arose as other young wizards noticed something was wrong.
Harry and Ron tried to guess what was happening.
Hermione turned to ask for Ivan's opinion but found that Ivan was completely unbothered by the train's odd behavior. He was engrossed in a book, his brow furrowed as if deep in thought.
Suddenly, the magical lights in the carriage flickered and then went out, plunging the surroundings into darkness, with only a bit of light seeping in from the windows.
Harry stuck his head out of the carriage, peering down the corridor, which was equally dark. Something seemed to be floating in the darkness, eerily quiet except for the constant sound of the sliding doors.
"There's something out there!" Harry swallowed hard, pulling his head back into the compartment and whispered.
"What is it? Did you see it?" Ron became even more frightened upon hearing Harry.
Ivan stopped flipping through his book, as the dim environment made it difficult to read. He quickly guessed that the outside was infested with Dementors.
However, Ivan didn't care, as they were there to search for Sirius Black, and he couldn't summon a Patronus at the moment. Besides, Professor Lupin would handle it.
Ivan pointed his Wand upward, and the extinguished magical lights came back on. He then continued reading, casting Occlumency, and immersing himself in his world.
The light returned, but Harry and Ron felt no sense of security. The entire carriage seemed to grow even colder, with a bone-chilling cold seeping into their bodies from their feet, making Hermione uneasy.
The next moment, the three of them held their breath as a dark shadow appeared on the window of the compartment, vaguely visible through the glass.
A deep, chilling cold seeped in through the cracks in the door, and something seemed to be being drawn out.
Ron and Hermione felt only mild discomfort, but Harry was much worse off, feeling drowsy and mentally foggy.
Creak
The sliding door opened slightly, and a withered, scabbed hand rested on the doorframe, a bone-chilling wind blowing in from outside.
Creak
With an unpleasant sound, the sliding door was fully opened, and Ron stared in horror at the tall, cloaked figure before him.
It seemed to be floating in the air, its face completely hidden under the hood, and the exposed parts of its body were rotten and decayed.
This reminded Ron of the mummies he had seen in Egypt. Perhaps they would look something like this if their bandages were removed.
Hermione couldn't help but move closer to Ivan.
Harry also wanted to get as far away from the ghostly thing as possible, but his body seemed frozen, unable to move. His heart felt as if it were being gripped, and a voice was screaming in his head. He sensed panic and pleading from that voice, wanting to do something but feeling powerless.
An intangible, ethereal presence was continuously being drawn from Harry. The Dementor was sucking in air, making a gurgling sound, and was about to squeeze through the door.
Lupin had already opened his eyes at some point and reached into his robes.
At that moment, a voice sounded.
"Get out. You're disturbing my thoughts."
Ivan's tone was harsh as he turned to look at the decaying, broken figure. The train of thought he had been trying to form was completely interrupted by the Dementor's appearance.
Although Ivan had used Occlumency, to his surprise, it couldn't completely block the Dementor's influence.
The scene of Aisha's death from two months ago kept surfacing from the depths of Ivan's memory. Anger began to rise in his heart, and his eyes started to turn into a faint orange-yellow vertical slit.
The Dementor paused, its face under the hood turning to face Ivan. Dementors have no eyes and are thus unaffected by the direct death effect. Instead, it sensed the suppressed emotions from Ivan, finding them delicious, and couldn't resist moving closer.
The tattered, oversized cloak enveloped the small compartment, and the magical lamp couldn't withstand the pressure, extinguishing. Darkness crept in.
Hermione, standing beside him, felt all her happiness drain away, leaving only an empty shell.
Everything Ivan had been trying to forget came flooding back. His anger reached its peak, and a system notification sounded in his mind.
Then, Ivan raised his Wand, and a blinding light illuminated the compartment, dispelling the darkness.
A wave of white mist continuously surged and battered the Dementor's broken body, pushing it into the corridor.
The Dementor's black hood was stripped away, revealing its hideous, elongated face. Its hollow mouth emitted a silent scream in the white light, and its body began to disintegrate as if being corroded.
"What was that thing? Did you... did you kill it?" Ron stammered.
"Just a Dementor! It tried to enter the compartment and attack me. No one will care if it's dead." Ivan closed the book in his hand, his expression grim.
Under the Dementor's influence, countless scenarios of Ivan using the Time Turner to go back in time and attempt to save Aisha, only to fail repeatedly, surfaced in his mind.
This was why he hadn't controlled the power of his Patronus.
Not to mention, the wizarding world has always been wizard-centric. The statues in the Ministry of Magic's main hall openly proclaimed this ideology.
In a justifiable situation, a young wizard retaliating and killing a Dementor, a universally despised creature, would face no punishment.
"No, I mean, what should we do now? It looks like more of those things are coming." Ron pointed to the black shadows floating outside the window, speaking in fear.
