Chapter 284: Mantlescramble Battle (Xix)
Chapter 284: Mantlescramble Battle (Xix)
At least one thing was certain—Shiva and Seven Kill had guessed right. Feng Bu Jue had indeed been found by one of the "Heroes" within this scenario.
Whether by the Highest Will’s design or the system’s arrangement, Feng Bu Jue was now driving a car he’d stolen from Two-Face toward Wayne Manor when he encountered the one person he least wanted to see.
A shadow plummeted from the sky, landing with a metallic clang on the car’s hood. Feng Bu Jue slammed on the brakes, but the figure remained rooted in place, unshaken by the sudden stop.
Black Mantle. Dark bodysuit. Ripped muscles. Glowing crimson eyes.
Jason Todd. The second Robin, later the Red Hood, now the False Batman.
His Batman mask bore a metallic faceplate, and his torso was strapped with a bandolier of bullets like Rambo. As Gotham’s most ruthless "hero", his defining traits were clear—he wielded dual pistols… and killed without hesitation.
Pock-pock-pock!
The windshield shattered under a barrage of bullets, leaving six or seven gaping holes in the driver’s seat.
But Feng Bu Jue? He wasn’t about to die to such an attack. The moment he recognized Todd, he activated his spirit sense body technique, kicked the door open, and leapt out in one fluid motion. Had he hesitated even a second longer, he’d have been riddled with bullets.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Todd’s voice was sharp as his movements. Three seconds later, he’d already caught up to Feng Bu Jue’s spirit sense body technique, launching a brutal assault mid-sentence.
Feng Bu Jue couldn’t dodge. A knee slammed into his back with bone-rattling force. For ten agonizing seconds, he choked on empty air, his chest churning with searing pain.
But he gritted his teeth, rolled forward with the impact, and yanked out a bomb strapped to his body. “Don’t come closer!” he roared, his voice raw.
Todd froze, his fists unclenching.
“Haa… haa…” Feng Bu Jue knelt on one knee, gasping like a beached fish.
The two stood in the middle of the street, but Gotham’s notoriously grim public security meant the roads were nearly deserted. Even cars were scarce. Yet from the shadows of nearby alleys, pairs of criminal eyes watched intently.
“This trick never fails,” Feng Bu Jue muttered, deactivating his spirit sense body technique to stop his vitality value from draining. He staggered upright, wiping blood from his lips. That last hit had nearly knocked his teeth loose.
“You think I actually care if you or anyone nearby dies?” Todd’s voice rasped from beneath his metal faceplate, uncannily like the real Batman’s.
“Of course you don’t,” Feng Bu Jue shot back, smirking. “But I bet you did notice these explosives on me pack quite the punch. Even with your Kevlar bodysuit and memory-cloth polymer cloak, you’d still be blown to bits alongside me at this range.”
“Hmph.” Todd’s smirk was audible as he holstered his pistols. “You know a lot, kid… And that dodge of yours wasn’t bad either.”
“If I’d missed, we’d both be dead,” Feng Bu Jue retorted.
“Next time I shoot, I’ll keep that in mind,” Todd said dryly. “These days, everyone’s running around strapped with bombs.”
“Ha!” Feng Bu Jue fired back. “Says the guy parading around in a Batman costume with a gun.”
Todd’s voice turned icy. “I am Batman.”
“Hahahahaha!” Feng Bu Jue laughed harder. “Jason… Jason…” He deliberately used his real name. “What would Bruce think if he saw you now?”
The name struck a nerve. Todd snarled, “Never say that name again!” His fists clenched. “Who are you? How do you—”
“Look at yourself,” Feng Bu Jue interrupted, quoting a line from the comics where Jason clashed with Tim Drake. “You’re pathetic. Like some kid playing ‘trick-or-treat’ in a Halloween costume.”
Todd fell silent for a few seconds, his rage unprovoked. “You remind me of someone…”
“Hahahaha!” Feng Bu Jue mimicked the Joker’s maniacal laughter. “What’s wrong? Seeing another Robin die didn’t bring back any unpleasant memories, did it?” He taunted, hoping to distract Todd long enough to escape. “You think killing ‘him’ on Earth-51 made you invincible? You need therapy, Jason. You’re just as crazy as he was.”
“Enough!” Todd barked, Mantle billowing as he lunged.
His speed was blinding, his initial charge leaving a phantom afterimage in Feng Bu Jue’s eyes.
With unmatched martial prowess and superhuman strength, Todd overwhelmed Feng Bu Jue. Another blow struck Feng Bu Jue’s ribs, reducing his vitality value from full to a mere 27%. The sheer power of the Heroes in this scenario was terrifying.
“Where’s the detonator?” Todd gripped Feng Bu Jue’s collar, demanding answers.
“Heh… Who knows? But I’ll warn you—lose consciousness, say… from a knockout punch, and the bombs go off,” Feng Bu Jue lied effortlessly. His poker face was flawless, every word dripping with confidence.
“I’ve got plenty of ways to make you talk,” Todd grinned menacingly beneath his mask. “I’ve been dying to test this on freaks like you.” He produced a small green vial from his belt.
With a flick of his wrist, the vial shattered, releasing a green mist that engulfed Feng Bu Jue’s face.
“Cough… cough!” Trapped in Todd’s grip, Feng Bu Jue inhaled the gas helplessly.
“Time to taste fear, freak!” Todd sneered.
Feng Bu Jue recognized it instantly—Scarecrow’s (real name Jonathan Crane) infamous fear gas.
In the Mantlescramble Battle comics, Todd had stolen some of Scarecrow’s fear gas from the Batcave and used it against Nightwing. But Nightwing had been inoculated against all known variants, rendering the gas useless beyond briefly disorienting him. Todd, thinking he’d gained the upper hand, had made a critical mistake—exposing his weakness, which led to his defeat.
“Haha… hahahaha!” Feng Bu Jue chuckled after a dozen seconds, his eyes gleaming. “Seriously, Jason. You got any more of that? Hit me again.”
