Chapter 284: Advanced Patronus Charm
Chapter 284: Advanced Patronus Charm
"To be honest, I really don't fancy pretending to be an expert in teaching." Aberforth took out four bottles of butterbeer from under the counter and placed them on the old counter.
Albert paid eight Sickles, then distributed the butterbeer to everyone.
Putting the Sickles into the wooden cash box, Aberforth continued, "The magic we use is not merely a single method. Wizards further improve upon magic, causing it to change according to the caster's will, which is a more advanced application of magic."
"Wizards usually refer to these as 'Advanced' forms." Aberforth took a puff of his pipe, leisurely blowing a smoke ring, "Of course, the reason magic is deemed advanced is that these changes represent a further step in the utilization of magic. Many wizards are unaware, and some are even incapable of achieving this. Their emergence stems largely from wizards' continued exploration and research into magic."
"I know that. It's like this, right?" Albert raised his wand and cast Lumos, causing a ball of light to float above their heads, instantly brightening the dim Hog's Head pub.
Aberforth widened his eyes, opening his mouth as if to say something, but he forgot he was smoking, and ended up choking on the smoke, coughing uncontrollably.
"Well, yes!" Aberforth was astonished by Albert's magical aptitude. Even Albus, at this age, might not have been able to achieve this level.
"Of course, the Patronus Charm is far more difficult than this because the charm itself is profound magic, so the advanced variation is naturally harder." Aberforth ignored his pipe and stepped out from behind the counter, sitting across from Albert on a creaking wooden chair. He continued, "Many people believe that only those with pure hearts can summon a Patronus, but this is actually a misconception. Many people with negative personality traits can also summon a Patronus."
Fred, George, and Lee Jordan looked at each other, but Albert was not surprised. He remembered that even the toad professor from the fifth book could summon a Patronus.
"It seems that you know a lot about this." Aberforth was a little suspicious, wondering if the boy in front of him would become the next Albus in a few years.
"Yes, I do." Albert nodded, signaling for Aberforth to continue.
"When casting the Patronus Charm, the caster needs to be confident and focus all their thoughts on a particularly happy moment. They also need strong magical power to support the spell." Aberforth explained, "As for the application of the Advanced Patronus Charm, you should have read what I wrote for you."
"I read it, but I still don't quite understand. It would be better if you explained it personally."
Albert had indeed read what Aberforth wrote for him, but he felt that it wasn't very helpful, or perhaps the textual description was too abstract.
"You must be resolute, and negative emotions will affect the release of the Patronus Charm. Many wizards, when facing Dementors, are unable to cast their Patronus." Aberforth raised a finger, "You need to learn how to maintain your happiness."
"Most profound magic requires strong magical power as support, and the Patronus Charm is no exception. That's why they haven't succeeded yet." Aberforth raised a second finger and then pointed to Fred, George, and Lee, who were still struggling with the charm.
"Confidence is half the battle." Aberforth raised a third finger, "However, I think you don't lack that."
Even he could tell that the boy in front of him was confident and never thought he would fail.
Albert was speechless. He really wanted to ask Aberforth to get to the point, but he held back and didn't interrupt.
"To learn the Advanced Patronus Charm, you need to be able to easily cast the basic Patronus Charm." Aberforth seemed to sense Albert's impatience and continued, "When you cast the Patronus Charm, there is a motion of drawing a circle with your wand. This is the process of accumulating power for the charm, after which you need to chant the spell 'Expecto Patronum'."
"During the power accumulation, you need to repeat in your mind the message you want to send." Aberforth explained, "That's why the messages sent via Patronus are usually short."
The Weasley brothers and Lee Jordan could understand every word, but they couldn't quite grasp the concept.
"Oh!"
Albert seemed to understand what Aberforth meant.
"The Patronus Charm is used for sending messages, and its power is not usually strong enough to maintain a corporeal Patronus. It takes a long time to practice to be able to summon a corporeal Patronus while sending a message."
Albert nodded to indicate that he understood.
"You understand?" Aberforth marveled at the boy's quick comprehension.
"Try it!" he said.
"You haven't finished explaining, have you?" Albert suddenly asked.
"I originally wanted to wait until you could reach that level before telling you the final step." Aberforth didn't hide it and continued.
"Next, you need to let the Patronus find the person you want to send the message to. Either by fixing a location, like a well-cast Apparition spell, or by directly finding the person, similar to a Tracking Charm. Do you know how to cast a Tracking Charm? I think this part is a bit too advanced for you now."
Albert frowned slightly as he indeed didn't know how to cast a Tracking Charm.
"I'll learn the Tracking Charm when I get back."
"Expecto Patronum!" Albert recalled happy memories and the message he wanted to convey, and finally chanted the spell, but only a wisp of silver gas emerged from the tip of his wand.
Undoubtedly, he had failed.
"Failure is normal. You need to practice more. There's no one who can immediately master the advanced application of the Patronus Charm after just hearing the theory." Aberforth casually consoled him.
"Thank you, Mr. Aberforth!" Albert took out a pen and, to Aberforth's surprise, recorded the application of the Advanced Patronus Charm.
Then, he signaled to his three companions, and they left the Hog's Head pub.
"I hate the Hog's Head." George muttered.
"That's really rare!" Lee Jordan finished the rest of his butterbeer and left with Albert.
"I think the Patronus Charm is difficult to learn!"
Fred's wand only managed to produce a pitifully thin gas.
"Your magical power is not enough yet. It took me a lot of time to learn it too. Of course, using it against Dementors is another matter entirely." Albert prepared to return to Hogwarts before other students arrived in Hogsmeade.
"We want to make a trip to Zonko's Joke Shop." Fred and George said in unison, "Our Dungbombs are almost used up."
"I heard Zonko has some new products." Lee Jordan chimed in.
"Alright, but I think we should hurry!" Albert took out his pocket watch and showed it to the other three, "I don't want other students to catch us wandering in Hogsmeade and report it to the professors."
As it turned out, Albert's words were in vain.
As soon as the three entered Zonko's Joke Shop, they were attracted by the various goods on display. By the time they were ready to return to Hogwarts, the streets of Hogsmeade were already filled with students. The four had no choice but to use the Disillusionment Charm and take a big detour to avoid the crowds.
