Chapter 283: Lanchi's Suspicion
Chapter 283: Lanchi's Suspicion
"Professor Loki, do you truly believe what you said in class?"
Cid smiled, his expression revealing a hint of fatigue.
Lanchi nodded, his gaze distant as they strolled along the stone corridor. Through the terrace of the corridor, they could see the small pond in the center of the Green Garden, its surface adorned with floating flower petals.
"From my personal research, I do believe that those beings in the footage are unlike any demons I know of."
Lanchi replied honestly.
Even though he might not be entirely correct, based on his subjective judgment, those beings did not fit the profile of typical demons.
"…."
Cid fell silent for a long moment.
"I can tell you one thing."
He gazed at the pond and spoke softly.
"Please, go ahead, Professor Cid."
Lanchi now sensed the delicate position that Cid was in.
According to Lanchi's prior knowledge, Cid Allen Dale belonged to the Imperial Grand Sage Isis' academic faction and maintained absolute neutrality regarding the empire's turmoil.
Though they had not explicitly discussed their stances, they could both infer each other's inclinations.
"During this month's assessment day, there might be someone who intends to do something cruel to Zestila, such as removing her dragon horn or eyes."
Cid's hesitant voice carried a great deal of uncertainty.
"Why?"
Lanchi paused upon hearing this and asked.
"It's just a guess."
Cid's words trailed off, leaving the sentence unfinished.
What followed was a moment of silence between the two.
Lanchi understood Cid's implication.
Some things were just not convenient to say outright.
Cid also suspected that there was a force on the Northern Continent attempting to create a perfect demon disguise, exacerbating fear and instigating war.
Such experiments and refinements inevitably required test subjects.
Most of the demons in the Protoss Empire were of mixed blood.
However, Zestila's latest enrollment examination report indicated that she had an ancestral regression rate close to that of a pure-blooded demon.
Obtaining materials from Zestila could potentially be of significant value.
Cid must have had some additional information to make such an inference.
As they approached the History Department office building, its exterior, weathered by time, appeared slightly antiquated. Yet, after the winter snow had melted, the brick walls exuded an even more profound and mellow ambiance.
"Thank you for the warning, Professor Cid."
Crossing the threshold, Lanchi finally spoke softly.
Beyond the doorway, a dim yellow light filled the space, and at the end of the corridor, an ancient wrought iron chandelier cast a faint glow, illuminating the shadows on the walls.
It was the day after tomorrow—Wednesday—the monthly assessment day.
If he could protect Zestila and find someone who matched Cid's suspicions, Cid might share more of the intelligence known to the neutral faction.
"In the meantime, I'd appreciate it if you could help me maintain classroom discipline, Professor Loki."
Cid smiled gently and earnestly.
The conversation they had just had seemed to dissipate as naturally as passing clouds.
"Rest assured, I guarantee to straighten out the academic atmosphere."
Lanchi nodded with a sense of responsibility.
…
As the sun set and darkness enveloped the land, the dawn soon illuminated it once more.
Time passed, and in a blink of an eye, two days had gone by.
It was the end of February, the monthly assessment day at the Helrom Protoss Royal Academy.
A soft pink hue gradually dispelled the night's silence and darkness. In the quiet residential area of the academy, a solitary dormitory quietly awakened.
Ivy covered the walls of the building, revealing a beige exterior amidst the lush greenery. From behind the floor-length curtains, Zestila slowly rose from her bed, her sleepy eyes holding a hint of fierceness as she ruffled her messy hair.
Today, she had to wake up early. If she didn't arrive at the assessment district by 7:50 a.m., she would be marked absent. Not only would she lose the opportunity to earn a substantial amount of credits, which only came once a month, but she would also have many credits deducted as a penalty.
Outside the window, the garden was already filled with the melodious chirping of canaries.
"..."
Zestila knew that her teacher had probably woken up early and was now feeding the birds in the garden.
She activated her student wristband, looking at it curiously as she noticed the dull, deep red text displaying her credit points, which now read 【172 (+10)】.
"Why did I receive so many credits yesterday?" she wondered aloud.
It seemed that a new batch of credits had been deposited at midnight, bringing her total to 182.
The fact that the number was in parentheses indicated that Professor Loki had earned these credits for her.
While 10 points didn't seem like a significant amount, it was still a considerable achievement, even for upperclassmen, to earn double-digit credits in a single day. Zestila was already at the top of her class among the preparatory students, yet she rarely earned more than single-digit credits during regular classes.
Usually, the main way for preparatory students and first-year students to earn credits was through the monthly assessment days.
On these assessment days, performing exceptionally well could earn one around 100 credits, and with both excellent performance and good luck, it was possible to attain close to 300 credits. For preparatory students, accumulating a total of 1000 credits would qualify them for early advancement to the first year.
"I should have just asked him to do nothing at all," Zestila muttered to herself as she stepped off the bed and onto the soft carpet.
Nevertheless, she felt touched by his efforts.
Earning 10 credits in a day was no easy task, even for upperclassmen.
She hadn't seen much of her teacher these past two days.
He had left early in the morning and only returned late to his apartment; she hadn't caught a glimpse of him in the lower-grade areas at all. He must have been working hard.
The main house was surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant flowers. In one corner of the garden stood a tall eucalyptus tree, its canopy spreading like a giant umbrella, providing ample shade for the plants and small animals below.
Stepping out of the mansion, Zestila soon spotted Lanchi in the garden.
She approached him quietly, taking care not to startle the birds again.
The garden path was paved with exquisite pebbles, and vibrant flowers lined its sides. In the morning light, they shyly displayed their colors, while a pair of white butterflies danced among the blooms, their wings shimmering in the morning sun.
Zestila paused, standing before Lanchi.
"Teacher, what's with these 10 credits?" she asked, her curiosity getting the better of her.
Unlike usual, the birds, though startled by her presence, soon returned, perhaps assured by Lanchi that she was a friend, or perhaps they, too, sensed the gentle nature of this dragon.
"It's a normal work reward. From now on, you'll receive 10 credits every day for the next three days. As long as I come to school, I can earn credits for you. I was busy yesterday and didn't have a chance to tell you," Lanchi explained with a smile, setting down the bag of grain he had been holding.
He had completed the employment formalities on Monday, so Tuesday was considered his first official day of work, which was why Zestila received the credits for yesterday.
"Teacher, have the upperclassmen been bullying you these past two days?" Zestila asked, her eyes flicking to her wristband.
She couldn't help but worry about Lanchi spending all his time in the upper-grade areas.
"No," Lanchi replied, tilting his head in confusion at the question.
"That's good," Zestila said, relieved. Her biggest concern was that her teacher would be targeted by upperclassmen.
Today's monthly assessment day would include a bounty system.
If one made enemies within the school, they might find themselves with a bounty on their head.
And if they made a lot of enemies, that number could multiply.
However, it was unusual to anger so many people within the school.
