Chapter 283: Extracurricular Learning
Chapter 283: Extracurricular Learning
"It's true!" exclaimed Sho Marufuji excitedly from his seat in the school store.
"Last night, I got up in a daze to use the bathroom, but somehow I ended up at Professor Daidosuji's door."
"Why would you go to Professor Daidosuji's door to use the bathroom? Could you be any more confused, Sho?" Hayato teased.
"Shut up! The important part is next!" Marufuji lowered his voice and glanced around cautiously as if afraid of being overheard, then continued mysteriously.
"When I got to the door, I found it ajar. Professor Daidosuji was sitting at the computer, communicating with someone. I couldn't quite make out what they were saying, but it sounded like they were talking about an 'ancient tomb' and how it would be a shame to leave it 'buried and sleeping.' It was so scary."
"What nonsense are you talking about? Were you sleepwalking?" Yugi laughed.
"Well, I was a bit drowsy," Marufuji admitted, scratching his head.
Yuan Xuan, sitting at the same table and eating a golden egg bread from the school store, remained silent. Yugi, as always, had bought the golden egg bread but claimed he was tired of eating it, so he gave it to Yuan Xuan.
Hearing this, Yuan Xuan's mind began to race.
It seemed like it was time for some extracurricular learning.
This was also a plotline from the original story. Professor Daidosuji would organize an extracurricular activity to visit the ruins on the island, but they would accidentally trigger a mechanism and enter the Sprite World. There, they would encounter a tomb-guarding tribe of Sprites, and Yugi would engage in a Shadow Duel.
However, it wouldn't be a life-or-death Shadow Duel. The opponent wouldn't die from losing, but they would suffer real damage during the duel.
Looking back, this incident was most likely a special trial arranged by Professor Daidosuji to test Yugi's abilities.
Now, it seemed that the first semester was coming to an end, and it was indeed about time for this event.
As expected, during class that day, Professor Daidosuji brought up the project.
After an entire semester, Professor Daidosuji's alchemy class had successfully driven away most of the students. Only about a dozen students remained, leaving large swaths of the classroom empty.
However, Professor Daidosuji was quite laid-back and didn't bother with student attendance. He would simply start lecturing on topics that he knew most students wouldn't listen to and intentionally botch a few alchemy experiments, effortlessly wasting another class period.
The bell rang to signal the end of class.
"What a nice sleep!"
Yugi, who had appeared to be sitting straight and listening intently throughout the class, stretched and opened his eyes, which had been drawn shut with a pen.
Only then did Marufuji realize that his brother had been asleep the whole time.
Action Direction: Tom Cat.
Marufuji gasped, "So, Brother was sleeping just now?"
"Well, that means it's mealtime now." Yugi was delighted.
In his world, apart from dueling, there was only eating and sleeping—he couldn't help but be happy.
"Wait a moment, everyone," said Professor Daidosuji, pulling out a stack of documents. "Please take these with you."
"Huh?" Yugi's enthusiasm waned. "Homework?"
"No, these are the plans for Sunday's extracurricular activity," Professor Daidosuji clarified. "There are many ancient ruins hidden within this school, and Sunday's activity will involve exploring one of them.
Anyone who wants to join is welcome."
The handful of students who had shown up exchanged glances.
As expected, only a few of them turned up on the day of the activity.
On one side was the iron triangle trio from the Osiris Red Dormitory, led by Yugi: Yugi, Marufuji, and Hayato. On the other side was the research trio: Yuan Xuan, Mitsukawa, and Asuka.
"By the way," Marufuji said, looking curiously at the trio across from them, "We from the Red Dormitory were forced to come by our dorm leader. Why are you guys here?"
"Exploring ruins sounds interesting," Yuan Xuan smiled.
Moreover, while the Grave Keeper deck was lackluster, several individual cards in it were of decent quality in the early stages, even finding their way into World Champion decks.
Field Spell Card - Royal Valley of the Kings
As long as this card exists on the field, all Magic, Trap, and Monster effects that affect the graveyard are negated, and neither player can remove cards from the game by sending them to the graveyard.
This was a card that only needed a short description to understand its annoying capabilities. Even in the modern Yu-Gi-Oh! meta, it could single-handedly shut down entire decks that heavily relied on graveyard resources.
"The ruins do sound interesting," Hayato said. "That particular ruin is located near the volcano, and entry is usually prohibited. There's no way we could have gotten there without a teacher leading us."
Asuka: "I heard rumors that the ruin might be related to the Shadow Games, so I wanted to check it out."
Due to her brother's disappearance, Asuka was always sensitive to any rumors related to the Shadow Games. She made it a point to involve herself in any incidents that pertained to the Shadow Games or the missing students on the island.
"Alright, then! Our team is assembled. Let's go!" Professor Daidosuji said enthusiastically.
The group packed their bags and set off towards the mountain-top ruins.
"According to records, this ruin is an ancient burial site," Professor Daidosuji explained as they walked. "There are rumors that it's some sort of forbidden tomb, but those are probably just rumors. Ahahaha."
Hearing this, Asuka became even more intrigued.
A forbidden tomb? That sounded like it might be connected to the missing people on the island.
Perhaps there would be some clues about her brother.
Asuka never let any potential lead slip by, even though most of them had turned out to be dead ends so far. However, her persistence seemed to be paying off, as You Xuan actually had some information about her brother, Fubuki, on this trip.
In the anime, according to the Sprites who guarded the tomb, only one person had ever defeated them in a Shadow Game before Yugi and his friends, and that person was Fubuki.
Furthermore, Fubuki had won half of a mysterious Dark Item during that duel, with the other half eventually ending up in Yugi's possession.
In the subsequent Phantom Demon arc of the anime, the completed Dark Item played a crucial role when Yugi faced his own Shadow Game.
It might be the only Dark Item that You Xuan currently had a clear lead on and a straightforward way of obtaining. So, while this trip might be just an extracurricular activity for the others, You Xuan had a definite purpose in mind.
Following the plot, all they needed to do now was to follow Professor Daidosuji's lead.
The group trekked through the mountains, climbing for most of the day before finally reaching their destination under Professor Daidosuji's guidance.
The entrance to the ancient ruin was located near the Duel Academy's volcano. It was said that within lay the remains of an ancient dueling arena, a burial site so old that it now resembled a dueling field.
Excellent, the students had been successfully led to the designated location.
Professor Daidosuji narrowed his eyes, a faint smile playing at the corners of his lips.
His next step was to pretend to accidentally have his Pharaoh Cat trigger the Dark Item buried nearby, which would then transport the students to the Sprite World guarded by the tomb-keeping Sprites.
As soon as this thought crossed his mind, a verdant beam of light shot into the sky, causing the very earth to tremble! The azure sky dimmed, and in the students' astonished gaze, the sun split into three, forming three suns that hung high in the air. A radiant rainbow-hued net seemed to descend from the heavens, enveloping the entire area within its vibrant glow.
The students were stunned, and even the mastermind behind this plan, Professor Daidosuji, was taken aback.
What's happening?
This was indeed part of his plan, but he hadn't expected it to start so soon!
Professor Daidosuji turned his head in bewilderment and saw You Xuan standing there with an innocent look on his face, his hands raised in a helpless gesture.
"Professor, did I accidentally touch something I shouldn't have?" You Xuan asked.
Professor Daidosuji: "..."
