Chapter 281: The Azure Sky Horse Trio
Chapter 281: The Azure Sky Horse Trio
There are various methods to search for rats, such as relying on the keen sense of smell of Shadow Wolves to detect and catch them on the ground.
Upon discovering a rat hole, they would send Stone Beetles to burrow underground and retrieve the rats.
The Beakbirds were tasked with aerial reconnaissance, ready to swoop down and attack or shoot them with feathers upon spotting their targets.
Rod and Mila's job was to supervise, riding on the backs of River Crabs.
The atmosphere would have been pleasant if the surroundings hadn't been so severely damaged by the rat swarm.
Of course, their primary task wasn't sightseeing but to guard against unforeseen circumstances.
Rod observed the sparse collection of monsters and remarked, "The efficiency seems a bit low."
"It's because they won't swarm like yesterday during the day," Mila explained.
"Hmm... Do you have any better ideas?"
Mila rubbed Worm, who had accompanied them, and said with a smile, "Use Worm as bait? It's plump and fragrant, it'll definitely attract them."
"Huh?" Worm showed a fearful expression, its small horns drooping.
"That's too cruel, isn't it?"
Worm snuggled into Rod's arms, but immediately added, "And there's so little meat on it. It won't last long and won't attract many rats."
Worm felt like crying and returning to the Abyss. This place was unbearable!
Mila patted Worm's head to comfort it and suggested, "How about the Soul of Satan?"
She meant to use the Soul of Satan to bombard the surrounding area.
"No way," Rod replied. Although they had informed the village chief about potential minor damage, they couldn't turn the farmland into a bombed-out wasteland.
"Let's use Nest Worm for a carpet search instead."
Rod sighed. While it would be nice to take their time and enjoy the process, the villagers were waiting to start farming.
If it weren't for the farmland, Rod had a biochemical rat extermination plan.
Although the Nest Worm would get tired, it could take a break every two hours.
The Nest Worm appeared, and the real carpet search began—a true carpet search, a worm carpet.
The worms had excellent flexibility, and the rats here were large, so they could squeeze into almost every rat hole.
Thus, the rat-catching efficiency increased, and the worms continuously dragged rats out of their holes.
Although there were casualties, it was not a significant concern.
"Ah, I'm so tired," Rod recited his lines emotionlessly as he leaned against Mila.
Mila embraced Rod and ruffled his hair before smoothing it back into place.
The warrior's life was filled with peril, yet here he was, indulging in beauty. Rod realized he had the potential to be a decadent ruler.
But the worms were having a blast... Rod only needed to be a power bank for them.
After nearly two hours of hard work, Rod was about to take a break when he suddenly sensed the worms rapidly disappearing.
Not only the worms but even two Stone Beetles had been eliminated—the kind of defeat that sent ancient Stone Beetles back to the Summoner's Canyon in pieces.
Rod quickly sat up and warned, "Be alert! There's a powerful creature underground nearby."
"Mhm," Mila nodded seriously, her eyes scanning the surroundings warily, prepared for any sudden emergence of a giant creature.
A few minutes later, a rat hole, much favored by the worms, suddenly exploded, causing the soil to rise. Among the debris were dazed worms.
Immediately, a tall figure leaped out, its two glowing red eyes fixed on Rod.
It was a giant rat standing upright, as tall as two people, with a rotund belly and a long, whip-like tail. Its front teeth were a foot long.
"Hiss—" The giant rat opened its mouth, emitting a raspy sound.
Rats poured out of the hole, running from afar to gather around the giant rat.
"It's truly the Great Rat King," Rod remained calm. He would have found it troublesome if the rat had appeared earlier or later, but the timing was perfect.
"Smash it!" Rod signaled to the golem, which ran over with a thumping sound, heading straight for the Great Rat King.
The fearless worms had already launched their attack, remembering only the command to attack rats. Since this thing was a rat, they bit down.
Under the Great Rat King’s command, the rats also launched an assault, and a battle between the worms and rats erupted once again, although on a smaller scale than the previous day.
The golem’s fist swung out, and the Great Rat King’s sharp claws swiped back.
In the next moment, a few pieces of rock fell from the golem’s body, while the Great Rat King’s front teeth were broken, and it flew away with a crooked face.
Rod shook his head: "So weak, maybe Elfman shouldn’t take this one after all?"
Mila hit him: "How can you still remember that!"
Just then, another rat of similar size appeared from another direction, slapping the head of a Void Nest Worm.
The Nest Worm vanished on the spot, while the other two worms, as they retreated, spat out dark purple magic orbs.
The large rat nimbly dodged left and right, then leaped high, heading straight for Rod himself.
"Another one? And it actually understands tactics?"
Rod was surprised but not panicked, as Mila had already taken in the Soul of Satan, and a larger purple-black magic sphere appeared in her right hand, which she threw with force.
The large rat’s abdomen was struck hard, its body bending into a bow as it flew backward, landing in the midst of the explosion’s light.
Hopefully, it will be left in one piece.
Mila turned and smiled: "How about it? Your personal bodyguard."
"Absolutely amazing!" Rod didn’t hide his admiration and affection.
The vibrant lip gloss, the crack-like scar on her face, paired with the explosion’s light nearby...
He even had the urge to call her 'sister'! Mila tossed a few magic orbs into the rat crowd on the other side to speed up the battle, then sweetly smiled as she returned to her normal state.
In just a few seconds, she had switched to a completely different style.
Too unfair.
The other large rat was soon pounded by the golem to the point of being unable to function.
The leaderless rats were quickly dealt with by the worms.
With this, the rat extermination process was significantly accelerated.
At this moment, three figures suddenly appeared in the direction where the rat Mila had blasted had flown.
One of them squatted down to check the situation: "Troublesome, it seems someone else has already taken care of it."
The smaller one asked: "What should we do next, then?"
The last, dark-skinned handsome man said awkwardly: "There’s no other choice, we’ll have to meet them. B-but it’s not like I want to."
"Mr. Hepeki, from Azure Sky Horse?" Rod recognized the person who had forcefully installed the 'language pack' in his mind.
The other two he had seen in magazines before.
"Miss Mila, it’s nice to see you again," Hepeki greeted with a bright smile, "You look even more radiant than last time."
The dark-skinned handsome man adjusted his hair, looking away: "I... I’m Lotus. Just to be clear, while you are beautiful, I didn’t come here specifically to introduce myself."
A tsundere, a male tsundere? Rod felt a bit uncomfortable.
"Miss Mila, nice to meet you, I’m If from Azure Sky Horse."
The shortest and most handsome man dramatically kneeled down, his eyes twinkling as if stars were in them, and he extended a hand as if to perform a hand-kissing gesture, "I’ve always admired you. May I call you sister?"
The three of them seemed to habitually ignore Rod, circling around Mila.
A man! Rod almost lost his cool, the words Elfman often said flashing through his mind.
He just wanted to call out the Canyon Vanguard to fly these guys away.
Mila smiled sweetly, holding Rod’s hand and leaning against him:
"Hello, I’m Mila from Fairy Tail, and this is my boyfriend, Rod."
