Chapter 28: Unexpected Visitors
Chapter 28: Unexpected Visitors
"One, two, three... seventeen, eighteen, twenty... Whoa, that many?!" Naoki was astonished.
He turned to look at the hen; after laying so many eggs at once, she seemed to have entered a state of exhaustion, staggering as she walked and appearing very listless.
After swaying for a while, the hen walked back to the feeder and began devouring the chicken feed inside.
Seeing this, Naoki became concerned. Had he somehow exhausted the hen?
Naoki observed for a while, then recalled the effects of the special chicken feed from his memory:
"When fed to a rooster, it accelerates the fertilization of eggs. When fed to a hen, she will lay a large number of eggs in a short period."
However, after laying eggs, the hen would enter a 15-day cooling period where she couldn't lay more eggs, nor could she eat this feed again. Moreover, she would need to consume a large amount of food to replenish her stamina.
"So, it's recovering the lost stamina now," Naoki breathed a sigh of relief.
Fortunately, the effect of the feed wasn't to squeeze the hen dry all at once. From the description, it seemed more like an advance withdrawal, causing the hen to lay eggs that she would have laid over the next 15 days all at once.
After laying the eggs, the hen would enter a state of exhaustion and require a large amount of feed.
Naoki stood by and watched the hen's movements.
After finishing its own portion of feed, the hen started eating the feed meant for the other two hens.
Only after devouring all the feed in the trough did it stop, returning to its nest and yawning as it lay on the pile of eggs. Soon, it fell asleep.
Naoki stood up and began calculating in his mind.
From the original owner's memory, he knew that eggs in this world were very cheap. A box of 10 eggs sold for only 250 Pokedollars in the market.
Since Zack bought eggs from the ranch at a wholesale price, the selling price would be slightly lower than the market rate.
In other words, the entire pile of eggs in front of him was worth less than 500 Pokedollars.
After deducting the cost of the feed the hen had eaten, there wasn't much profit to be made.
Thinking of this, the effect of this feed didn't seem so outrageous after all.
Naoki took half of the eggs, intending to keep them for his own consumption, and left the other half for the hen to hatch.
He then opened the door of the chicken coop and let the other three chickens out to bask in the sun and breathe some fresh air.
After finishing these tasks, Naoki went to water the crops in the fields.
With only a little over 4,000 Pokedollars left, he had about half a month before this batch of crops matured.
Making money from eggs didn't seem very profitable, so Naoki planned to explore the Big Pot Lake located north of the ranch today.
To prevent wild Pokemon from causing trouble on the ranch while he was away, he decided to leave Motostoke to watch over the place.
Back at the wooden house, he took out six Poke Balls from the drawer, which he had bought from the Stow-on-Side shop. Since bringing them back, he had left them untouched in the drawer.
His original intention was to use them when he needed to bring Pokemon with him while running errands later on.
Thinking of this, Naoki looked at the Coalossal by his side.
Coalossal was also looking at him.
"Have you seen this before?" Naoki asked.
"Ga!," Coalossal nodded its large head.
Seeing this, Naoki thought to himself: It must have seen this when it was with Professor Orchid in the Wild Area.
The player then obtained Golurk's Poke Ball from Professor Oleana's son, Peony.
So, Golurk's Poke Ball should be with Peony now? Naoki pondered.
Peony, nicknamed the 'Batman' by others, due to the similarity of losing his parents, just like Batman.
As the son of Professor Oleana and Professor Magnolia, Peony had once lived with his parents and Golurk for a long time.
However, Golurk's innate wildness and competitive nature caused it to attack other Pokemon.
Fearing that Golurk's existence would be exposed and to prevent further attacks, Professor Oleana had no choice but to bring it back to the Giant's Seat, where they remained secluded.
This made the young Peony feel like Golurk had taken his mother away from him. Coupled with Professor Oleana's neglect due to her busy work, Peony grew to resent Golurk and his parents, disliking any mention of them.
"Never mind, let's deal with this matter later."
After all, Golurk's Poke Ball was with Peony, and a captured Pokemon couldn't be captured again by another Poke Ball.
The first time a Pokemon is captured by a Poke Ball, it imprints a mark on the Pokemon, and subsequent attempts with other Poke Balls would be futile.
If Naoki recalled correctly, that was how ordinary Poke Balls worked.
To test his theory, he held the Poke Ball against Golurk's body.
However, after a few seconds, Golurk remained outside of the Poke Ball, unaffected.
Witnessing this, Golurk lowered its head to look at the Poke Ball, appearing somewhat confused.
"As expected, it won't work," Naoki said as he recalled the Poke Ball, abandoning the idea of capturing Golurk.
He packed drinking water, berries, Poke Balls, and other items into his travel backpack, readying himself for the exploration of Big Pot Lake with Golurk to investigate the fish there.
Just then, they heard Motostoke's roar coming from outside the door.
Naoki, with his backpack on, stepped out to investigate. Motostoke was staring at the entrance of the ranch, roaring, "Gaoh!"
"What's wrong?"
Following Motostoke's gaze, Naoki spotted two familiar yet unfamiliar figures in the distance.
Leading the way was a graceful and valiant woman. She wore a lab coat over a primitive-style fur garment, with a necklace of beast fangs around her neck, exuding a wild charm.
Trailing behind her was a small boy, roughly eight years old, with the same brownish-blond hair as the woman. From their appearances, they seemed like a mother and son duo.
They stopped not too far away, their eyes fixed on Naoki and Golurk, who stood under the eaves of the house.
The woman's eyes sparkled with confidence as her gaze rested on Golurk. She then politely addressed Naoki, "Hello, did you save this Pokemon?"
